Age at First Mating on Lifetime productivity of Corriedale Ewes in Southern Brazil. Repositório Alice
OLIVEIRA, M.M. de; KENNEDY, J.P.; SELAIVE-VILLARROEL, A.B..
A total of five different Corriedale flocks (respectively initiated in years 1976--1980), totalling 2,561 breeding ewes, were first mated at 19-20 or 30-31 months of age. Lifetime production data on: a) fleece weight and its components (as measured by greasy fleece weight, washing yield, clean fleece weight, fibre diameter and staple length), b) reproductive performance (as evaluated by the number of lambs weaned/ewe joined and lamb weaning weight/ewe joined) and c) ewe liveweight, were investigated within each flock up to 1982. Considering the environment provided in the study, the results indicated that earlier mating in these Corriedale ewes depressed their subsequent wool quantity, yet there was no appreciable effect upon wool quality components and...

Implications of Medullation and Fibre Diameter Distribution on Wool Diameter Measured by Airflow. Repositório Alice
OLIVEIRA, N.M. de; KENNEDY, J.P..
The specific gravity (related to medullation as assessed by three techniques) and fibre diameter variability of 242 wool samples (encompassing the range of diameters between 22.0 and 38.0 m.m) were considered to evaluate the accuracy of diameter estimates as obtained from the Airflow apparatus. Data are presented showing the improvement obtained on diameter estimates of highly medullated wools, within a precision comparable to others reported for non-medullated fibres. Results on the techniques employed lo assess medullation (Projection Microscope, Medullameter and InfraAlyser) have also been discussed.

Resistance to Compression of Wool in Mixed-Aged Flocks. Repositório Alice
OLIVEIRA, N.M. de; KENNEDY, J.P..
Estimates of resistance to compression (adjusted for variations of both crimp frequency and fibre diameter) of 1852 wools derived from Corriedale breeding flocks varying in age composition (2-6 years old), where age group was pooled over four sampling years, were examined. Data are presented showing that age group did not influence the slope of the regression line of resistance to compression on crimp frequency and fibre diameter; however, the height of these lines (adjusted to a common value of crimp frequency and fibre diameter) were quite variable among age groups. It can therefore be expected a differential in processing performance of wools from flocks of different age structure. In addition, the non-significant contribution of fibre diameter on...
