Agroclimatological information about the experimental field of the SHIFT-area, ENV 23, 42, 45, 54. Repositório Alice

Throughout the entire experimental phase of the SHIFT-colaboration of Embrapa Amazonia Ocidental (Manaus-AM) and the University of Hamburg, agrometeorological data have been monitored by a Stationary Climatological Station situated directly at the experimental site (3° 8' S, 59° 52' W). These data have been compared with the ten-year means of the Embrapa Agrometeorological Station (Manaus-AM), in a latitude of 03° 08' 05" S, 60° 01' W in an altitude of 44m above sea level. The climate of the experimental field is classified as AF according to Koppen. The years 1996 and 1997 reveal climati characteristics of "El Nino" years and, thus, they allow to develop an excellent idea about short time local changes of climatic factors compared to a ten-year means.

Polyculture plantings enriched by controlled growth of secondary vegetation after slash and burn treatment are suitable systems for recuperation of degraded areas in Central Amazonia. In order to adapt polycultures to their indivicual sites, predominantly indigenous useful plants have to be combined. These plants act as production factors and as site management components. There is urgent need to study the inherent ecological adaptability and phenotype flexibility of these plants, their specific nutrient needs, their reaction to environmental factors and their impact on their specific sites in order to work out rational combinations of plants for resistant and resilient polyculture systems. According with the studies realized the litter from peach palm (pupunha) contibutes with only 110 g/ha or 0,1% of total soil C to the C budget of the system. On the other hand it produces high quantities of root exudates. About 16.500 kg/ha C or 15% of total soil C respectively are released into the soil. Taking into account the C loss by microbial respiration and root respiration peach palm contributes with 10.700 kg/ha or 10% of total soil C respectively to the C budget of the system. Compared to C from root exudates the quantity of C from microbial biobass under peach palm is low. Only 45 kg/ha or 0,0004% of the total C originate from the microbial biomass.

The productivity of different useful tropical plants is compared with respect to their biomass production. Furthermore, analyses of nutrient contents serve to explain the interrelationship between nutrient supply and primary production. The biomass and nutrient contents from three to six month old plants from Bertholletia excelsia H.B.K. (castanha-do-Brasil), Cedrela odorata L. (cedro vermelho), Dipteryx alata (cumaru), Theobroma grandiflorum (Spreng.) K. Schum. (cupuacu), Elaeis guineensis Jacq. Comparou-se a produtividade de diferentes plantas tropicais de valor economico em relacao a producao de biomassa. As analises dos teores de nutrientes serviu para explicar as interrelacoes entre o fornecimento de nutrientes e a producao primaria. Foram determinados a biomassa e os teores de nutrientes das diferentes partes das plantas: castanha-do-brasil (Bertholletia excelsa), cedro vermelho (Cedrela odorata), cumaru (Dipteryx alata), cupuacu (Theobroma grandiflorum), dende (Elaeis guineensis), mogno (Swietenia macrophylla), taxi branco (Sclerolobium paniculatum) e urucum (Bixa orellana), entre tres e seis meses de idade. Os teores de Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Al, Zn, Cu e P foram analisados com o metodo de ICP-OES. Foram encontrados valores extremamentes altos...

This current investigation is part of the project "Recultivation of degraded and abandoned monocultures in stable mixed cultures with special reference to soil biological factors" situated in the CPAA/EMBRAPA in Manaus. In this study the biomass production and the mineral element content of selected useful tropical plants will be determined. The experimental study was carried out in order to evaluate in which way a sustainable growth of mixed plantation systems under the prevaling site conditions is possible. For this reason, the biomass production and the mineral element supply of six 2 1/2-year-old plants of the high-quality wood species Swietenia macrophylla King including roots were determined. Up to twelve fractions (leaves, wood, bark, etc.) were separated and the element content (Ca, Mg, K, P, S, Fe, Al) of the different tissues was determined by Optical Emission Scpectrometry (ICP-OES). The factions allowed a high differentiation of the element content and can reveal physiological sinks within the plants.
