A magyar mezõgazdaság sikeressége a hatvanas hetvenes években AgEcon
Dimeny, Imre; Lakner, Zoltan.
Out of the attempts made at modernising the Hungarian society and economy in the era of socialism it was only the agricultural transition and development that has brought a long, internationally recognised success. The Hungarian agricultural model has become a point of reference for numerous developing countries, and was widely recognised even in the developed world. The aim of this article is to analyse the driving forces and socio-economic environment in the formation of the Hungarian agricultural model as well as its results, object lessons and experiences. The authors emphasise the specific aspects of the Hungarian agricultural development, contrasting it with that of Western- and Eastern-Europe. It was underlined, that the most important drivers of...

Application of decision support methods in preparation for a Hungarian bio-fuel programme AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Vizvari, Bela.
Under current market circumstances and those predictable in the near future, further increasing agricultural production seems to be rather groundless. By utilising agro-ecological conditions more efficiently, one eighth of Hungary’s gasoline demand could be satisfied from maize production, without considerably decreasing current agricultural production for human and animal consumption. For realisation of biofuel programmes a relatively stable socio-economic environment is essential. There is considerable pressure on government from different stakeholders to shift the risks of large-scale investments to the state budget. In the long-run, under the conditions of a liberalised world market the feasibility of biofuel-programmes based on European raw materials,...

COMPETITIVE STRATEGIES ON THE MEAT PRODUCTS MARKET AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Reti, Attila.
The Hungarian meat-market can be characterised by intensive transitions both in market actors and product-structure. There is a decrease in the consumption of pork and at the same time in this category an increase in the share of processed meat products. There are also increasing differences in the quality and price-level of processed meat products. This transition highlights the importance of relations between the meat production industry and the meat retail trade. In the framework of a field-study we have analysed the opinions of more than two hundred meat trade specialist on supplier-retailer relationships. The responses have been analysed by one- and multivariate statistics. The results of the research confirm that the overwhelming majority of...

Consumer behaviour in the Hungarian beer market AgEcon
Hajdu, Istvanne; Major, Anita; Lakner, Zoltan.
In the Hungarian food economy beer marketing remains something of an enigma. Based on a direct-question survey, focussing mainly on educated younger consumers, this article offers an overview of the most important characteristics of Hungarian beer consumption. It is important to stress that beer consumption is situational, meaning tied to specific consumption situations. Research results prove that logistic regression analysis is a suitable method for determining why consumers opt for specific beverages in specific consumption situations. To analyse targeted marketing, the application of heuristic methods, and decision trees provide a high degree of accuracy. This has proven true for consumers that drink non-alcoholic beers.

Interests and goals in the agricultural higher education system of Hungary – a methodological approach AgEcon
Hajdu, Istvanne; Lakner, Zoltan.
In recent decades the Hungarian intelligentsia, both political and governmental, emphasised the importance of higher education in socio-economic modernisation. At the same time, after nearly twenty years of system-transition we have to see that the ambitious goals of reforms in many cases have been turned into their opposite. This paper analyses the key actors and their strategies in the higher education system, highlighting the most important obstacles to development based on a multi-actor strategy model, based on institutional economy and principle-agent theory. The results show considerable divergence in force and interest-structure of different actors. As a consequence of relationship of forces it has been shown that, without steadfast governmental...

Role of veterinary management in increasing pig breeding efficiency: a methodological approach AgEcon
Ozsvari, Laszlo; Biro, Oszkar; Lakner, Zoltan.
The aim of this research was to determine the effects of different factors of production (farm management strategy, veterinary management, physical farm conditions, and breeding technology) on the performance of Hungarian pig breeding farms. Performance is defined in a broad sense, reflecting the complexity of pig breeding, taking into consideration technological and economic indices. According to our hypothesis a direct, quantifiable stochastic relation can be shown between management strategy, veterinary practice management, construction and building engineering characteristics of plants, breeding technology and the performance of farms. The data for the analysis were acquired by a direct question survey of more than 130 Hungarian pig breeding farms....

SOME ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE HUNGARIAN BIOFUEL PROGRAMS AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Szabo-Burcsi, Dora; Mago, Laszlo.
The use of renewable materials in energy production is gaining in importance all over the world. The production of bioethanol and biodiesel is an important element of the agricultural strategy of numerous countries, even though the economic and environmental impact of these projects is subject to significant debates. Our paper analyses the welfare effects of the Hungarian bioethanol programme, as well as the economic feasibility of the projects. It can be demonstrated that the Hungarian bioethanol programme will cause a rather marginal increase in agricultural prices. The cost of bioethanol production is estimated between 470 and 630 €/m3, influenced by numerous factors. This estimate is in line with the average European values. The possibilities for...

The application of multivariate statistical methods for understanding food consumer behaviour AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Hajdu, Istvanne; Banati, Diana; Szabo, Erzsebet; Kasza, Gyula.
Understanding consumer behaviour is a necessary precondition for a targeted communication strategy. The behaviour is a complex phenomenon and research needs to undertake a rigorously apply sophisticated methods. This article entails the combined utilisation of categorical principal component analysis and cluster analysis to determine the major, relatively homogenous consumer groups and this is coupled with confirmatory factor analysis and structural model building to understand consumer behaviour, based on Fishbein and Ajzent’s theoretic model.

THE NECESSITY OF STRATEGIC THINKING IN HUNGARIAN AGRIBUSINESS AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Husti, Istvan.
Based on analysis of a time series of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) indicator and Relative Trade Advantage Index the performance of Hungarian agriculture and food industry has declined rapidly during the last fifteen years. This fact highlights the importance of searching new paradigms in development. In short term the increasing of production–quantity does not seem to be a rational way. The only alternative is the product–differentiation strategy. Under conditions of increasing competition in foreign markets the importance of domestic markets gains in importance. The domestic market is a dynamic one, too: the producers should be better focussed of new demands of specific consumer segments (e.g. elder generations, ethnic minorities etc…). On the...

Values, attitudes, and goals of future Hungarian food engineers AgEcon
Hajdu, Istvanne; Lakner, Zoltan.
Over the last few decades Hungarian higher education has been radically transformed, and this transformation was implemented to counter the backwardness that previously plagued the education system. Agricultural education in particular was part of this transformation process, which included the disciplines of food science and related technology. This attempt at transformation yielded only a partial success; student numbers shot up, but there was no subsequent general improvement in the efficiency of higher education. This article is based on two surveys carried out in 1997 and 2007. The students’ values can be characterised as pluralistic and heterogenous. Based on longitudinal research, a shift can be seen toward materialistic and hedonistic values. The...

VERSENYKÉPES ÉLELMISZERGAZDASÁG – ÉLHETŐ VIDÉK (Négy tézis egy lehetséges fejlesztési politika körvonalainak meghatározásához) AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Hajdu-Balogh, Dalma; Kajari, Karolina; Kasza, Gyula; Markusz, Peter; Vizvari, Bela.
(1) Ennek érdekében a magyar agro-ökológiai adottságokat messzemenően figyelembe vevő, a precíziós...
