Thebault, Anne; Martin, Anne-genevieve; Le Coguic, Yvette; Hirata, Toshio; Tige, Gilbert; Pichot, Yves; Chollet, Bruno; Cochennec, Nathalie; Renault, Tristan.

The main objectives of the Mollusc Pathology Network (REPAMO) are to prevent introductions or outbreaks of infectious agents, prevent spread within a farm and especially from one farm to another, to study ways of decreasing the impact of infectious agent and to monitor the development of these pathogens in order to guarantee the health status of oysters exchanged with our commercial partners. On the whole, REPAMO's activities have not changed and include: - monitoring the development of diseases that have to be reported to authorities and carrying out analyses to classify zones: bonamiosis and marteiliosis; - baseline monitoring of farmed and wild populations of bivalve molluscs; - studying cases of abnormal mortality events; - controlling mollusc...

First record of the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia mytilovum in Mytilus sp (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) from France ArchiMer
Comtet, Thierry; Garcia, Celine; Le Coguic, Yvette; Joly, Jean-pierre.
Steinhausia mytilovuln is a globally distributed microsporidian parasite which infects the oocytes of the blue mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Despite the intensive monitoring effort made on mussel populations, the parasite has not previously been reported in France. We report herein on the occurrence of S. mytilovum in Mytilus sp. from 1 cultured and 2 natural populations on the northern coast of France, thus extending the parasite's known distribution northwards. We also report on the observation in 1989 of S. mytilovum in M, galloprovincialis from the Golfe de Fos area in the Mediterranean Sea (South of France), S. mytilovum was observed in the European hybrid zone between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis, which therefore renders the...

Bi-parental families were produced in hatchery and tested in the field in 2001. Two sets of 5 families were constituted, selected on their high (R) and low (S) survival. These two sets were reared in Brittany from March to November 2002. Samplings were performed twice a month to obtain data on biometry, survival, reproductive cycle, biochemical composition, adenylate energy charge, hemolymph parameters (ions and defense system) and muscle strength. "R" and "S" oysters exhibited different reproductive effort and spawning strategy. "R" oysters allocated less energy in gonad than "S" ones and presented a complete spawning at the end of August contrary to the "S" which spawns partially. Mortality started in July when the seawater temperature reached 19 degree...

Infection of the cockle Cerastoderma edule in the baie des veys (France) by the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia sp. ArchiMer
Comtet, T; Garcia, Celine; Le Coguic, Yvette; Joly, Jean-pierre.
We report the occurrence of the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia sp. in the oocytes of the common cockle Cerastoderma edule in a natural population in France, where high mortalities occurred. Steinhausia sp. appeared primarily as sporocysts containing many small spores, and putative earlier developmental stages were also observed. Both its prevalence and infection intensity were low, and no host defence reaction was recognized, suggesting that Steinhausia sp. had no detrimental effect on C. edule. Its prevalence was higher in cockles lying on the sediment surface, but the significance of this observation could not be explained given the poor knowledge of the Steinhausia life cycle. The present data did not allow specific identification of the parasite,...

The European flat oyster Ostrea edulis has been considered as the traditional French oyster for a very long time and has now nearly disappeared from our farms, as a consequence of the two successive epizootic of the Marteilia refringens parasite and Bonamia ostreae. The actual quasi monoculture of Crassostrea gigas has made necessary the search for a diversification in oyster culture, including the search for a new start of the indigenous flat oyster culture. The Ifremer has been conducting parallel works since 1985 in order to better understand the biology of the parasite as well as to try and select different lines of flat oyster resistant to Bonamia ostreae.

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Claude, Serge; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Yvette.
The network IFREMER/ REMORA watches every year, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year class ; and "adults" = two-years class), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale) ; it must not be regarded as an accurate estimation of professional oyster ongrowings. With regard to REMORA results, generally tallied with professional observations, 1998 on the whole was a second year of low mortality. But some areas remained affected by significant mortalities such as Pen-Bé in South Brittany. The year 1998 was overall a very poor year for growth : the mean oyster weight in...

This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale). With regard to the Breton stations of the network, the year 1999 showed a small increase of mortality rates, both in adults alter their transfer on the REMORA stations and in juveniles during the Summer season. this was particularly observed in Morlaix, Aber Benoît and Pen-Bé. Although it was better than 1998, the year 1999 was a poor year for growth, especially in North Brittany (62.5 g in...

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Claude, Serge; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Yvette.
Every year, from March to December, the IFREMER / REMORA network carries out a survey of mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year ciass ; and "adults" = two-years class), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. In Brittany, this network includes 11 points, to which regional points can be added (15 in 2000). With regard to the Breton stations of the network, the year 2000 showed rather low mortality rates, excepted mortality of several oysters when transfered to the sea. Several areas however had higher mortality rates (> 20%) : l'Arguenon, Morlaix, les Abers, Pen-Bé and Le Croisic. 2000 is a year of good growth in South Brittany (72.8 g in December), more average in North Brittany...
