The functional and numerical responses, reproductive characteristics, and viability of Campoletis flavicincta (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) as well as the mortality after parasitism of the host Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were analyzed in the laboratory. Campoletis flavicincta pairs were maintained until female death with 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 caterpillars day-1 of the host S. frugiperda. A type III functional response curve was fitted to the average number of caterpillars supplied per day during the female wasp lifespan, as the explanatory variable. The handling time was 0.5940 ± 0.0875h, and the instantaneous search 0.0047 ± 0.0020 h-1. The functional response for each of the first five days of the host was a type III. The longevity at...

Identification of the wood-borer and the factors affecting its attack on Caryocar brasiliense trees in the Brazilian Savanna - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i4.8629 Agronomy
Leite, Germano Leão Demolin; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Alves, Sergio Monteze; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Nascimento, Aline Fonseca; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Lopes, Paulo Sérgio do Nascimento; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Ferreira, Paulo Sérgio Fiúza; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Zanuncio, José Cola; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
The objectives of this work were to identify the wood-borer of the trunk of Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Caryocaraceae) and the effects of tree size, chemical and physical soil attributes, and floristic diversity in its attack. The wood-boring caterpillar of the trunck of C. brasiliense belongs to the family Cossidae (Lepidoptera). The number of pupae and the amount of sawdust produced by the wood-borer per tree was higher in the pasture 1 of Montes Claros and pasture in Ibiracatu than in the other four areas (pastures and savanna in Montes Claros and savanna in Ibiracatu). The number of pupae and the amount of sawdust was highest in the trunks of trees with diameters having a breast height (DBH) more than 30 cm. This may explain the severity of attack in...

Insecticide effects of Ruta graveolens, Copaifera langsdorffii and Chenopodium ambrosioides against pests and natural enemies in commercial tomato plantation - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i1.5900 Agronomy
Barbosa, Flávia Silva; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Leite, Germano Leão Demolin; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Alves, Sérgio Monteze; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Nascimento, Aline Fonseca; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; D'Ávila, Vinícius de Abreu; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Costa, Cândido Alves da; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticide effect of watery leaf extracts of Ruta graveolens (Rutaceae), alcoholic leaf extracts of Copaifera langsdorffii (Caesalpinaceae) and Chenopodium ambrosioides (Chenopodiaceae) in the concentration of 5% under field conditions. The experiment design was randomized blocks with six replications. The parcels treated with plant extracts showed reduction in the population of pests when compared with the control parcels. The extract elaborated with C. langsdorffii presented greater insecticidal effect under Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and sum of pests. It was verified that after 24 hours of spraying, the parcels treated with the extract of C. ambrosioides presented minor numbers of adults of Tuta...

Toxicity of extracts of Cyperus rotundus on Diabrotica speciosa - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i4.6902 Agronomy

The objective of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal effect or repellency of Cyperus rotundus, an important weed plant, through alternative methods of extraction, on Diabrotica speciosa, a pest that affects several plant species. The experimental design was completely casual, and consisted of five repetitions. The C. rotundus extracts were prepared using leaves and roots by alcoholic extraction, aqueous (hot water) extraction and aqueous (cold water) extraction and diluted to four different concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 15% of the volume of each extract). These dilutions were then tested and compared with a control. The higher mortality of D. speciosa adults as well as a smaller leaf consumption area were observed after treatments with increasing...
