Current and potential development of perennial grasses in rainfed Mediterranean farming systems Inra

Past and recent development of perennial grasses in the rainfed Euro-Mediterranean region is reviewed concerning climatic constraints and main types of farming systems. The few Mediterranean cultivars that are registered and available are used for livestock production and cover crops only in subtemperate areas. These cultivars are adapted where annual rainfall exceeds 500 mm and accumulated water deficit from May to September is <800 mm. For the future, grass-legume mixtures need to be developed to meet the contrasting situations of livestock production and environmental use, with both functions contributing to farm income through the market and from public subsidies. The search to improve drought survival in temperate perennial grasses has led to a renewed interest in summer dormancy andhowto quantify it. This endogenously controlled trait, found in some temperate perennial grasses, is associated with drought that normally occurs in summer. While cessation of leaf growth and senescence of herbage occurs in all grasses in response to drought, it is under summer irrigation that these same responses are observed only in summer-dormant germplasm and hence the trait can be identi.ed in germplasm. Iron (Fe) is necessary for all living cells, but its bioavailability is often limited. Fe deficiency limits agriculture in many areas and affects over a billion human beings worldwide. In mammals, NRAMP2/DMT1/DCT1 was identified as a major pathway for Fe acquisition and recycling. Inplants, AtNRAMP3 and AtNRAMP4 are induced under Fe deficiency. The similitude of AtNRAMP3 and AtNRAMP4 expression patterns and their common targeting to the vacuole, together with the lack of obvious phenotype in nramp3-1 and nramp4-1 single knockout mutants, suggested a functional redundancy. Modeling tiller density, growth, and yield of mediterranean perennial grasslands with STICS Inra

A generic crop model (STICS) was adapted (STICS–Grassland) to model growth, yield, and environmental impacts of grasslands in France. It is a semimechanistic model combining equations of physiological processes and mathematical relationships between processes in a daily time step. The Information et Suivi Objectif des Prairies (ISOP; Grassland Information and Objective Survey) application was developed to estimate and map the real-time status of grass growth and forage production in the 200 forage regions of France, to help decision makers anticipate forage availability in case of severe defi cits. Cette revue présente un bilan du développement récent des graminées pérennes dans les régions méditerranéennes sèches, par type de système agraire. Peu de cultivars (cvs) sont inscrits et seuls ceux inscrits en France et en Australie ont des semences commercialisées. I/s ne sont significativement utilisés qu'en zones sub-tempérées. A l'avenir, les mélanges graminée-légumineuse à deux ou plusieurs composants s'imposent pour optimiser la production animale et les bénéfices environnementaux, tous deux contribuant au revenu des exploitations. Role of summer dormant perennial grasses as intercrops in rainfed Mediterranean vineyards Inra

Grass swards are increasingly used in vineyards to improve ecosystem function, reduce vine vigor, and enhance grape (Vitis vinifera L.) quality. In Mediterranean rainfed vineyards, the use of intercropping has been constrained because of excessive competition for water with the vine over summer. Perennial grasslands provide numerous agroenvironmental benefits due to continuous soil cover. In Mediterranean areas, chronic summer drought is expected to increase as a result of climate changes. Plant adaptations that protect meristematic tissues include dehydration delay, dehydration tolerance, and summer dormancy. Summer dormancy can only be reliably tested in plants not subjected to water deficit. Under summer irrigation, complete dormancy is manifested by cessation of growth in association with full senescence of foliage and induced dehydration of leaf bases. Background and Aims: Summer dormancy is a trait conferring superior drought survival in Mediterranean perennial grasses. As the respective roles of environmental factors and water deficit on induction of summer dormancy are unclear, the effect of intense drought were tested under contrasting day lengths in a range of forage and native grasses. Water use efficiency in a mild season and water cost of summer survival of perennial forage grasses in Mediterranean aeras Inra

Seize cultivars (cvs) de dactyle, fétuque élevée et phalaris ont été comparés pour la production et l'efficience d'utilisation de l'eau (WUE) pendant trois ans dans un essai au champ sous abri an ti-pluie à Montpellier (France). D'octobre à mai, les apports d'eau couvraient 70 à 80% de l'évapotranspiration potentielle. De juin à septembre, une sécheresse complète était appliquée, bloquant la croissance pendant trois mois. Les mesures ont permis de faire un bilan hydrique pour chaque cycle de croissance de chaque cv. La production fourragère pluriannuelle des cvs dépend de leur tolérance à la sécheresse et de WUE moyenne de la période active, laquelle dépend de la capacité de croissance des cvs aux basses températures de novembre à mars.
