Water-use efficiency (WUE) has been recognized as an important characteristic of vegetation productivity in various natural scientific disciplines for decades, but only recently at the ecosystem level, where different ways exist to characterize water-use efficiency. 5 Hence, the objective of this research was (a) to systematically compare different ways of calculating ecosystem water-use efficiency (WUEe) from eddy-covariance measurements, (b) quantify the diurnal, seasonal and interannual variability of WUEe in relation to meteorological conditions, and (c) analyse between-site variability of WUEe as affected by vegetation type and climatic conditions, across sites in European forest 10 ecosystems. Forêt et climat : rôle des forêts dans le cycle des gaz à effet de serre et les échanges d'énergie avec l'atmosphère Inra

Cette communication propose une synthèse sur le rôle des forêts en général et le rôle de la forêt de Pin maritime en particulier sur le climat. Elle donne un aperçu sur le fonctionnement de l'effet de serre, les gaz atmosphériques impliqués et les autres impacts possibles des forêts sur le climat. A partir d'une approche simplifiée elle compare les impacts climatiques de trois scénarios de sylviculture de Pin maritime et montre l'importance de la durée considérée pour le calcul des impacts sur les effets relatifs du stockage de carbone in situ et de la production, les effets de changements d'albedo étant quant à eux d'un ordre de grandeur inférieurs.

The objective of this study was to explore the distribution of major nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) in the aboveground compartments of an intensively managed tree species (Pinus pinaster Ait.). A total of 53 trees were cut down in even-aged stands respectively 8, 16, 26, 32 and 40 years old. The nutrient concentrations of the aboveground compartments were analysed. Nutrient concentrations of foliage did not vary with any of the variables used, except needle age. We present here the results of a water and nutrient manipulation experiment in a five-year-old plantation of maritime pine in south-western France.Water and nutrient levels were manipulated in a factorial design with two levels of irrigation (control receiving only rainfall (C) and irrigated (I)) and three levels of fertilisation (control with no added nutrients (C), P-only (P) and annual addition of a complete nutrient mix (F)) in order to quantify growth limitations of plantation forest in this particular area.The treatments applied during five years increased above-ground biomass annual increment by 4% (I) to 58% (IF) with respect to the control (C). The effect of drought on forest water use is often estimated with models, but comprehensive models require many parameters, and simple models may not be sufficiently flexible. Many tree species, Pinus species in particular, have been shown to maintain a constant minimum leaf water potential above the critical threshold for xylem embolism during drought. In such cases, prediction of the relative decline in daily maximum transpiration rate with decreasing soil water content is relatively straightforward. We constructed a soil-plant water flow model assuming constant plant conductance and daily minimum leaf water potential, but variable conductance from soil to root. Measurements of carbon dioxide fluxes were performed over a temperate intertidal mudflat in southwestern France using the micrometeorological Eddy Covariance (EC) technique. EC measurements were carried out in two contrasting sites of the Arcachon flat during four periods and in three different seasons (autumn 2007, summer 2008, autumn 2008 and spring 2009). In addition, satellite images of the tidal flat at low tide were used to link the net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) with the occupation of the mudflat by primary producers, particularly by Zostera noltii meadows.
