Barley undersown with red clover in organic and conventional systems: nitrogen aftereffect on legume growth Organic Eprints

Nitrogen (N) deficiency is a major problem in organic and low-input farming systems. Growing spring cereals with undersown legumes has a positive effect on soil fertility, enriching it with nitrogen, through symbiosis of legumes with nodule bacteria. Two hypotheses were tested: 1) undersowing of red clover increases the protein content of barley grains and 2) mineral N has negative aftereffect on growth of legume plants. Crop yields and supply of nitrogen compared in conventional and organic farming systems Organic Eprints

The aim of organic agriculture is to produce food of high nutritional quality in sufficient quantity. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of organic and conventional growing systems on (i) total amounts and sup-ply of N taken up or applied to plants during a five year crop cycle period and (ii) crops total dry matter (DM) yield obtained during same period. The total DM yields from the organic treatments were 25–33% smaller than from the conventional treatments. Cultivation technology influences the occurrence of potato early blight (Alternaria solani) in an organic farming system Organic Eprints

Nowadays, organically produced products have become more popular than ever and interest in them is still growing fast. The early blight causal pathogen Alternaria solani has not been considered a great threat to potato in northern climate conditions in the past and has not been routinely sprayed against. During our study early blight was evaluated in 2010 and 2011 on the plants of a potato cultivar ‘Reet’ in an organic farming experiment. In our study, both growing seasons were very favourable for early blight development. Significant differences between the two cultivation technologies were found (F1,12 = 4.84, p = 0.048). The interest of organic farmers for adopting conservation agriculture practices is currently growing. But, there are few technical and scientific references available for organic farmers when they start applying conservation agriculture practices. The main objectives of this study are (1) to explore the diversity of crop management practices using conservation agriculture methods among European farmers, and (2) to identify main farmers’ strategies. Do green manures as winter cover crops impact the weediness and crop yield in an organic crop rotation? Organic Eprints

The effects of different winter cover crops and their combination with composted cattle manure on weeds and crop yields were investigated within a five-field crop rotation (barley undersown with red clover, red clover, winter wheat, pea, potato) in three organic cropping systems. The control system (Org 0) followed the rotation. In organic systems Org I and Org II the winter cover crops were used as follows: ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. in 2011/2012) and a mixture of winter oilseed-rape (Brassica napus ssp. oleifera var. biennis) and winter rye (Secale cereale L.) in 2012/2013 before pea; winter oilseed rape before potato and winter rye before barley. Effect of conventional and organic cropping systems on SOC dynamics Organic Eprints

Soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration is an indicator for assessing soil quality. SOC concentration can be increased by using appropriate crop and soil management which can increase organic matter input into soil and decrease its mineralization rate (Follett, 2001). The aim of this study was to investigate SOC content and dynamics in four inorganic and two organic cropping systems in five crop rotation. Data presented in this paper covers the first rotation from years 2008 to 2012.

Effects of organic versus conventional farming on different chemical soil parameters in Estonia Organic Eprints

A five-year experiment results, have shown that fertilizer amendments are needed for preserving the nutrient balance in the soil. A combination of cattle and green manure, crop rotation and other organic farming practices, with chemical fertilizer amendments could suppose a sustainable solution for maintaining a correct nutrient balance in the soil in long term, better than both farming systems, conventional and organic, by separate.

Erinevate viljelusviiside pikaajalise kasutamise mõju mulla toitainete sisaldusele Organic Eprints

Taimedele oluliste makrotoiteelementide (N, P, K) sisaldused mullas on 10 aasta jooksul nii mahe- kui ka tavasüsteemi kõigi variantide mullas vähenenud. Lämmastikukadu mullast oli mahesüsteemi variantidel väiksem kui tavasüsteemi variantidel, seega mulla lämmastikusisalduse järgi oli maheviljeluse süsteem mullaviljakust säästvam kui tavaviljeluse süsteem. Mulla fosforisisalduse taset hoidev oli mahesüsteemis väetamisvariant, kus kasvatati talviseid vahekultuure ja külvikorra jooksul väetati taimi kolm korda sõnnikuga ning tavasüsteemis maksimaalses koguses lämmastikku saav variant. Kaaliumisisaldus vähenes kõigi katses olnud variantide mullas. Et kaaliumisisaldus ei väheneks kriitilise piirini, peab mulda viidava kaaliumi kogust suurendama – mahesüsteemis...

Estonian consumers attitudes to organic food Organic Eprints

The study of 740 Estonian occasional consumers has shown that 60 % of them are willing to buy organic products mainly because these contain fewer additives than conventional products. Therefore the consumers consider them first of all more natural and healthier. Preferred products are organic vegetables and fruits. Consumers prefer to buy them from supermarkets. Common awareness about organic farming needs improvement – only 11% of consumers felt themselves entirely informed.

Mahepõllumajanduses seab saagikusele tihti piiri umbrohtumus, kuivõrd konkureeritakse kultuurtaimedega vee, päikesevalguse ja toitainete pärast ning sageli ollakse vaheperemeesteks ka kahjuritele ning haigustele (Hole jt., 2005). Samas suurendavad umbrohud elurikkust ja toetavad põllukoosluse ökoloogilist talitluskindlust, luues toidubaasi taimekahjustajate looduslikele vaenlastele. Seetõttu tuleb taimekasvatusele kasuks nende mõningane olemasolu põllul, ent liigse konkurentsi vältimiseks tuleb nende arvukust siiski reguleerida, kuid loodushoidlikul moel. Maheviljeluses kasutatakse mitmeaastast külvikorda, mis säilitab ja suurendab mulla viljakust ja bioloogilist aktiivsust ning kus kasvatatakse liblikõielisi ja haljasväetistaimi või kasutatakse väetamisel komposteeritud sõnnikut (Mahepõllumajanduse seadus, 2007; Palts ja Vetemaa, 2012). Seega on õhulämmastikku siduvaid ja mügarbaktereid moodustavate liblikõieliste taimede kasvatamine maheviljeluse üheks põhitingimuseks. Liblikõielised taimede kasvatamine soodustab ka teiste toiteelementide (P, K, mikroelemendid) omastamist mullast või orgaanilisest materjalist.
