La contaminacion por mercurio de los rios constituye un problema cada vez mas preocupante en toda la cuenca amazonica. Este mercurio tiene origenes naturales como las emisiones volcanicas o termales, la disolucion de algunas rocas o la erosion de los suelos que, en esta zona del mundo, presentan concentraciones en metales pesados muy elevadas. El mercurio puede provenir tambien de las actividades de explotacion auriferas, cada vez mas numerosas en la Amazonia, region afectada por la "fiebre del oro" nuevamente en los anos 70. Hydrological control on the temporal variability of mercury in surface waters of the upper Madeira basin rivers, Bolivia IRD

Mercury contamination of waters and soils is an environmental problem of increasing concern throughout the Amazon River baxin. In order to better understand the sources of Hg in a major tributary to the Amazon, a monthly time series spanning an entire hydrological cycle has been measured for two rivers of the Upper Madeira drainage basin. At both gauging stations, we observe a hydrological control on the temporal variability of the dissolved and the total mercury (THg) concentrations: they increase in phase with increasing discharge and we observe the highest THg concentrations at the peak stage. Total mercury distribution in the Bolivian tributaries of the Madeira river : importance of the biomagnification process in the aquatic food-chain IRD

Total mercury concentration range measured in surface waters of the Bolivian Amazon basin vary from 2.24-2.57 ng 1-1 in glacial waters to 7.228.22 ng 1-1, in the Beni River at the end of the Andean piedmont. The highest mercury concentration were not found in the rivers where the mining activities take place but at the outlet of the Andean sub-basins exploited for their alluvial gold. The quite low concentrations of Hg in the sediments indicate a low sedimentary contamination due to the high particulate transport in the Andena tributaries. In piscivorous fishes, the mercury concentrations found vary in the Beni and Mamore rivers from 0.8-2.3 ug Hg g-1 and 0.4-2-1 ug Hg g-1 respectively, to 0.3-5.2 ug Hg g-1 in the Madeira River at its formatin. Trace elements distribution in the Andean sub-basins of the Madeira river : role of the weathering processes in the freshwaters geochemistry IRD

The distribution of trace elements was investigated in surface waters in two upper Amazonian basins. Three main factors of the geochemical characterisation of the rivers explained mainly by weathering and dilution processes, are: substrate lithology, mining activities, and organic content. The dissolved elements reflects the lithological differences between the Mamore and Beni basin. Andean tributaries of the Mamore R. are characterised by high concentrations of Mn, Sr, Mo, Bas and U while high concentrations of As Zn, Cd and Cs characterise tributaries of the Bani R. Transport and behaviour of total mercury in the Amazon river at the confluence of black and white waters IRD

This study describes the transport and speciation of mercury and the associated role of organic matter in these processes at the confluence of the Negro ('black waters') and Solimoes ('white waters') rivers which form the Amazon river. The Negro presents the highest total Hg content (11,6 to 18,2 ng 1-1) due to the extreme particulate Hg concentration which reaches values (2074 ng g-1 at the surface) 10 to 20 times higher than these measured in other Amazon tributaries. The total organic carbon analysed in the Negro consists primarily of particulate carbon (54.8%), while the dissolved organic carbon is composed mainly of humic compounds (50%), carriers for most of the metal ions transported in both rivers.
