Adaptation to pyrrolnitrin in Botrytis cinerea and cost of resistance Inra

The objective of this work was to estimate the risk of a decrease in the efficacy of biocontrol as a result of selection pressure exerted by biocontrol agents on Botrytis cinerea, focusing on pyrrolnitrin, an antibiotic identified in diverse biocontrol agents having an effect on B. cinerea. To evaluate a possible decrease in sensitivity to pyrrolnitrin, 10 successive generations of five isolates of B. cinerea were produced in vitro in the presence of a sublethal dose (10 mu g L-1) of the antibiotic. For one isolate, a significant reduction in the sensitivity to pyrrolnitrin at the fifth generation was observed with a resistance factor of c. 11. Biological control of Botrytis cinerea on stem wounds with moderately halophilic bacteria Inra

Infection of tomato stem wounds by Botrytis cinerea is an important problem which can cause severe economic losses in greenhouse tomato crops. Three moderately halophilic bacteria were tested for their ability to protect pruning wounds from attacks by B. cinerea under growth chamber conditions. The severity of the disease estimated by the length of the rotted stem was used to calculate the area under the disease progress curves (AUDPC). Bacterial antagonists (B1, B2 and B3) were very effective in controlling Botrytis-infection on the tomato stems during the first 6 days and later by the end of the experiment. Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of grey mould, is considered as a major burden on greenhouse tomato production. In heated greenhouses, where leaf pruning is a routine practice and microclimatic conditions are favourable for grey mould development, infections of the pruning wounds result in stem cankers that can rapidly kill the plants. Chemical control is not always sufficiently effective and growers face increasing demands for reducing their dependency on pesticides. Several techniques can be used for the removal of leaves. La loi de programmation relative au Grenelle de l’environnement fixe l’objectif de réduire de moitié les usages des produits phytopharmaceutiques en 10 ans en accélérant la diffusion de méthodes alternatives sous réserve de leur mise au point. Dès 2007, à la demande des ministères en charge de l’environnement et de l’agriculture, l’Inra a lancé une étude sur les itinéraires culturaux économes en pesticides. Quatre filières ont été prises en compte : grandes cultures, arboriculture fruitière, viticulture et cultures légumières. Pour chacune d’elles, différentes stratégies de limitation du recours aux produits phytosanitaires ont été analysées, au vu des connaissances disponibles.
