PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been...

Deep-water Hydromedusae from the Lacaze-Duthiers submarine canyon (Banyuls, northwestern Mediterranean) and description of two new genera (<i>Guillea</i> and <i>Parateclaia</i>) OMA
Bouillon, J.; Pagès, F.; Gili, J.-M.; Palanques, A.; Puig, P.; Heussner, S..
Several species of hydromedusae are reported from material collected by sediment traps placed in the Lacaze-Duthiers submarine canyon, off Banyuls (north-western Mediterranean). Two new taxa <i>Guillea canyonincolae</i> gen. nov. et sp. nov, and <i>Parateclaia euromarge</i> fam. nov., gen. nov. et sp. nov., are described. The existence of highly-specific hydromedusa populations in other Mediterranean canyons which appear to be related via geological history, topography, hydrographic and ecological features peculiar to each canyon, is discussed in relation to these new records.

Numerical modeling of bottom trawling-induced sediment transport and accumulation in La Fonera submarine canyon, northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Payo-payo, Marta; Silva Jacinto, Ricardo; Lastras, G.; Rabineau, Marina; Puig, P.; Martin, J.; Canals, M.; Sultan, Nabil.
Bottom trawling leads to recurrent sediment resuspension events over fishing grounds. Recent studies have shown how bottom trawling can drive seascape reshaping at large spatial scales and enhance sediment transport in submarine canyons, which subsequently impacts deep-sea ecosystems. Present knowledge on the transfer and accumulation of sediment flows triggered by bottom trawling is based on localized and infrequent measurements whilst a more complete picture of the process is needed. The present work focuses on the modeling of sediment transport and accumulation resulting from trawling activities in La Fonera submarine canyon, northwestern Mediterranean Sea, thus contributing to an improved assessment of trawling impacts. Based on mooring data within a...

Origin and Accumulation of Trace Elements in Sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean Margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Buscail, R.; Puig, P.; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Radakovitch, Olivier; Jeanty, G.; Heussner, S..
Continental margins receive natural and anthropogenic trace elements (TEs) from direct atmospheric deposition of aerosols onto the sea surface and from advection of riverine suspended particles and/or resuspended sediments from the continental shelf/slope. When the margin is incised by submarine canyons, as for example in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, most of these particles are preferentially transferred via these topographic features towards their final repositories in the abyssal plain. The Gulf of Lions (GoL) shelf receives the largest particulate riverine input to the Western Mediterranean, with its associated chemical contaminants originating from the industrialized and urbanized Rhone Valley. Sediments samples (grabs, cores and moored traps)...

Sediment transport along the Cap de Creus Canyon flank during a mild, wet winter ArchiMer
Martin, J.; De Madron, X. Durrieu; Puig, P.; Bourrin, F.; Palanques, A.; Houpert, Loic; Higueras, M.; Sanchez-vidal, A.; Calafat, A. M.; Canals, M.; Heussner, S.; Delsaut, N.; Sotin, C..
Cap de Creus Canyon (CCC) is known as a preferential conduit for particulate matter leaving the Gulf of Lion continental shelf towards the slope and the deep basin, particularly in winter when storms and dense shelf water cascading coalesce to enhance the seaward export of shelf waters. During the CASCADE (CAscading, Storm, Convection, Advection and Downwelling Events) cruise in March 2011, deployments of recording instruments within the canyon and vertical profiling of the water column properties were conducted to study with high spatial-temporal resolution the impact of such processes on particulate matter fluxes. In the context of a mild and wet 2010–2011 winter, no remarkable dense shelf water formation was observed. On the other hand, the...
