Studies on the development of 750 cupuacu-plants grown in a monocultura and three mixed cultivation systems on a degraded area, a former terra firme rain forest site near Manaus-AM (Brasil). It was conclude that - despite the vast precipitation in Central Amazonia - water supply is a limiting factor for the cultivation of cupuacu-trees. Plants grown solitary on degraded areas suffer frequently from draught. Thus, designs of plantation for the recultivation of degraded areas must consider the water balance of the system. Species composition and planting densities should lead to storied structures of the plant community. A stock of 750 seed derived cupuacu plants, cultivated in different cropping systems on an experimental site near Manaus, Amazonia, is being studied. In this paper studies are presented regarding the variability of productivity and maturity of cupuacu trees after 31/2 years of cultivation. The results indicate that cupuacu plants react very sensitive on even slightly varying site specific factors. This means that in practice the selecting and breeding of cupuacu plants for high yield and rapide development require a detailed documentaion of the environmental conditions, under which the quality determining characters had been observed.

The development of 750 cupuacu plants has been monitored after 3½ and 4½ years of growt in three different mixed cultivation systems and one monoculture. It has been found that the plant development vary significantly between the planting systems, the monoculture providing the worst conditions for the rapid maturation of cupuacu plants. Additionally it could be ascertained, that the development of cupuacu plants is significantly affected by distance to the adjacent primary or secondary forest. The strength of this influence lies in the range of the tendency obtained by different levels of fertilization (30% and 100% of recommeded dose). Study to evaluate the feasibiligy of sustainable agroforestry in central Amazonia (Brasil), paying special attention to the potential to recultivate degraded areas. For this purpose differente mixed cultivationsystems are being tested and compared to monocultures designed according to common practices. Study groups of various SHIFT-Projects are working on this experimental site, each groupe dealing with particular aspects of the different agro-ecosystems.

Study carried out at Embrapa Amazonia Ocidental (Manaus-AM-Brasil) on the cupuacu-seeds as raw material for chocolate-like products. The results reveal that cupuacu-seeds posses the biochemical potential to be used as raw material for chocolate-like products. However, simple application of the fermentation practices known from cocoa will not lead to a satisfactory yield of aroma precursors. There are some particular characteristics of cupuacu seeds, which must be met by appropriate fermentation procedures.
