Automatic detection of annual growth units on Picea abies logs using optical and X-Ray techniques Inra
Longuetaud, F.; Saint-André, L.; Leban, J.M..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the number and location of annual growth units (GU) in Norway Spruce logs to have an information on the past growth of trees and thus a better knowledge of wood properties like density and knottiness. Two devices were used: an optical device which gives an accurate, description of the external log shape and a medical CT scanner which, in addition, gives information about the internal density of log. For each device, a specific method was developed to detect annual GU. The “optical method” was based on variations of the cross-section surface along the logs and the “X-ray method” on variations in the density profile. The optical method provided an accurate evaluation of the number of GU. The “X-ray method”, more...

Decomposition of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) litter: Combining quality theory and 15N labelling experiments Inra
D'annunzio, R.; Zeller, B.; Nicolas, M.; Dhôte, J.F.; Saint-André, L..
A multi-site and multi-age set of in situ 15N-labelled litter decomposition experiments was carried out in various European beech forests. The sites presented contrasted situations of climate and humus type that were representative of northern Europe temperate forests. 15N-labelled leaf litter was produced by urea spraying in an experimental beech plot, and was used in litter decomposition experiments over a 3–6-year period, depending on the site. Schemes of decomposition covered a wide range of situations, some of them not expected, like high decay rate on Moder humus forms or slow decomposition on Mull humus form. The objectives of this study were to determine how nitrogen release and/or incorporation rates could characterize litter decomposition...

Practical methods for non-destructive measurement of tree leaf area Inra
Leroy, C.; Saint-André, L.; Auclair, D..
In an agroforestry context, the knowledge of leaf area is an important parameter to take into consideration because tree foliage shades the intercrop. Single leaf measurement (for example leaf length and width) is a widely used method to estimate leaf area in a rapid non-destructive way. In this study, the objectives were to estimate the leaf area of different leaf sizes and shapes for Acacia mangium Willd. (Mimosaceae), Tectona grandis L. (Verbenaceae), Hevea brasiliensis Muell.-Arg. (Euphorbiaceae), and Swietenia macrophylla King. (Meliaceae) Indonesian agroforestry trees. In order to characterise leaf area in field conditions a digital photograph method was used. Leaf length was measured in order to build relationships between leaf length versus actual...

Relationships between stem size and branch basal diameter variability in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten) from two regions of France Inra
Loubère, M.; Saint-André, L.; Hervé, J.C.; Vestol, G.I..

Scaling-up productivity (NPP) using light or water use efficiencies (LUE, WUE) from a two-layer tropical plantation Inra
Roupsard, O.; Le Maire, G.; Nouvellon, Y.; Dauzat, J.; Jourdan, C.; Navarro, M.; Bonnefond, J.M.; Saint-André, L.; Mialet-Serra, I.; Hamel, O.; Rouzière, A.; Bouillet, J.-P..
Net primary productivity (NPP) is a key driver of ecosystem C balance. Scaling NPP up to larger areas requires indirect methods: (a) for examble epsilon models based on light use efficiency (LUE = NPP/APAR, where APAR is the absorbed photosynthetically active radiation by green elements of canopy, or else models based on water-use-efficiency (WUE = NPP/E, where E = evapo-transpiration); (b) remote sensing tools to estimate the fraction of APAR(fAPAR) from vegetation indexes, or to estimate E. However, LUE and WUE are suspected to vary in space (edapho-climatic conditions, planting density) and time (seasonality, age), which needs to be documented before scaling up. Moreover, the application of this scaling approach to agroforestry systems with a stratified...

Slash and litter management effects on eucalyptus productivity: a synthesis using a growth and yield modelling approach Inra
Saint-André, L.; Laclau, J.P.; Deleporte, P.; Gava, J.L.; Gonçalves, J.L.M.; Mendham, D.; Nzila, J.D.; Smith, C.; du Toit, B.; Xu, D.P.; Sankaran, K.V.; Marien, J.N.; Nouvellon, Y.; Bouillet, J.P.; Ranger, J..
Within the context of sustainable management of forest ecosystems, a network was started by the Center for International Forestry Research in 1995 to evaluate the impacts of slash management practices on the productivity of eucalypt, acacia and pine plantations. This network has now reached one full rotation for the ten eucalypt sites in Australia, Brazil, China, Congo, India and South Africa. This paper reports an overall synthesis of tree and stand growth. Using a growth and yield modelling approach, we investigated the effects of slash management on site index defined as the asymptotic dominant height, basal area growth and stand structure. There were significant effects of slash and litter management treatments on two processes that drive tree and stand...
