Differenzialdiagnose: Eine Methode zur Ursacheneingrenzung bei Bodenmüdigkeit Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Bruns, Christian; Mäder, Paul; Schmidt, Harald; Thürig, Barbara; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Tamm, Lucius.
Fertile soils are highly important for arable farming. To maintain soil fertility, crop rotation including legumes is applied, particularly in stockless farms. Yet, many commercial farms report yield reductions for legumes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the causes for the observed soil fatigue can be narrowed down by a bioassay (modified differential diagnosis according to Bouhot) and whether this bioassay could be a useful tool to predict the suitability of a field to grow legumes.

Schmidt, Harald; Bruns, Christian; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter.

Evaluation of the causes of legume yield depression syndrome using an improved diagnostic tool Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Thürig, Barbara; Brandhuber, Robert; Bruns, Christian; Finckh, Maria R.; Fließbach, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Schmidt, Harald; Vogt-Kaute, Werner; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Lucius, Tamm.
The aim of the study was to establish a diagnostic tool to narrow down the causes for pea yield depressions. A differential two-level diagnostic test system was established under controlled conditions usingpeas (Pisum sativum L.) as test plants. Soils from 22 organically managed sites with unexplained moderate to high pea yield losses were tested in level 1 diagnostics (y-irradiation to eliminate potentiallyharmful organisms, nutrient additions to compensate for potential nutrient deficiencies or activated charcoal amendment to bind and thereby to immobilize potentially phytotoxic compounds). Results showedthat organisms harmful to the test plant were the primary cause of limited germination and growth inmost of the sampled soils, whereas a positive effect...

Faktoren des Körnererbsenertrages in der Ökolandbaupraxis Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Harald; Wild, Melanie.
With the aim of identifying key factors for field pea yield, 52 fields on 21 organic farms were evaluated from 2009 to 2011. Criteria for evaluation were soil variables, crop data, management and field history. The average pea yield of all farms was 2.1 t/ha including 5 fields that did not harvest due to inadequate growth and/or high weed pressure. Based on measurements in three control points per field, yield was 65 % higher when harvesting by hand. The main causes were heterogeneous crops and high yield losses through combine harvesting. According to multiple linear regression analysis of yields in control points, factors leading to high pea yield included deep soil, high available phosphorous content, low clay content and longer intervals between pea...

Schmidt, Harald; Langanky, Lucas.

Organic Eprints
Terhoeven-Urselmans, Thomas; Ilein, Florian; Schmidt, Harald; Ludwig, Bernard.
Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy is known for its inexpensiveness, rapidity and accuracy and may become a useful tool for the assessment of soil fertility. The objec-tives of this study were (i) to evaluate the ability of near-infrared reflectance spectros-copy (NIRS) to predict several soil chemical and biological characteristics of organi-cally managed arable land and (ii) to test if different sample pre-treatments yield comparable results. Spectra of the VIS-NIR region (400-2500 nm) from 56 either fresh or pre-treated (quick-freezing, freeze-drying and grinding) soil samples were recorded. A modified partial least square regression method and cross-validation were used to develop an equation over the whole spectrum (1st to 3rd derivation). Soil...

Klimagase und deren Minderung bei der Milchproduktion Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Frank, Helmut; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen; Rahmann, Gerold; Schmidt, Harald; Warnecke, Sylvia.
Sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission of milk production were analysed on organic and conventional dairy farms from cradle to farm gate and resulted in a mean of ca. 1 kg CO2 eq kg ECM-1 independent of the farm system. When calculated according to dry matter intake of the cows, mean percentages of GHG emissions from enteric fermentation on organic or conventional farms were 31 or 42 % from the complete product related emissions from milk production from cradle to farm gate, respectively. When feed quality parameters were considered in calculation, enteric methane production increased considerably with higher fibre contents in feedstuffs. This was especially important at lower milk yields. On the 44 farms that were analysed, minimal potential GHG...

Wolf, Daniel; Möller, Detlev; Schmidt, Harald; Wild, Melanie; Demmel, Markus.
A goal in ecological agriculture is to avoid and reduce soil compaction. One possibility is the use of a tire inflation system (TIS). Additionally, sowing equipment with broader working width can be used. Both technologies save working time and fuel. Furthermore, yield could increase due to less soil compaction, especially for peas as field trials show. Data from the field trials and from original farms were used to calculate the profitability for the soil protection technologies. The fuel savings are enough to cover the variable and fix costs of the TIS. The pea surplus is an extra revenue. If working time reduction is additionally valued than in total the farms can gain above 19,-€/ha arable land using a TIS. The most farms have not enough traction power...

Occurrence and importance of plant-parasitic nematodes in organic farming in Germany Organic Eprints
Hallmann, Johannes; Frankenberg, Andrea; Paffrath, Andreas; Schmidt, Harald.
In an attempt to evaluate the occurrence and economic importance of plant-parasitic nematodes in organic farming in Germany, a survey was conducted with the main emphasis on vegetable and cereal production systems. For vegetables, the survey included quantification and identification of plant-parasitic nematodes in soil samples and a questionnaire for growers querying production factors and damage levels. For cereals, the survey focused on quantification and identification of plant-parasitic nematodes in soil and plant samples. Overall, Pratylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus were the most prominent nematode genera under both production systems with an incidence of over 90% of the samples. Meloidogyne was detected in 51% of the samples in both systems. Other...

Oekologischer Ackerbauversuch Gladbacherhof - Effekte von Fruchtfolge und Bodenbearbeitung in der ersten Rotation Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Harald; Leithold, Günter.
In a long term trial at the University of Giessen three organic crop rotation systems with and without livestock and four soil tillage treatments (deep plough, 2 x two layer plough and cultivator/rotary harrow) are investigated since 1998. Compared to the other two rotations the stockless rotation without annual green manure showed lower cash crop yields, a negative N-balance and rising weed coverage. The highest cash crop yields were mostly achieved with deep ploughing. Two layer tillage caused N and C accumulation in the upper soil layer (0-15 cm). The weed coverage was highest in these treatments. Especially exclusive tillage with cultivator/rotary harrow resulted in a distinct increase of thistles and high coverage with annual weeds.

Organische Substanz in ökologisch bewirtschafteten Böden,Quantität, Qualität und ihr Einfluss auf Getreideerträge Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Harald; Schüler, Christian; Jörgensen, Rainer Georg.
In an on-farm investigation a total of 39 fields of 9 organic managed farms (main crop winter cereals) were sampled in the years 2005 and 2006. Several soil variables were evaluated as well as crop yield, weather data and the field history. Results of statistical analyses (mean, range, standard deviation, correlation and multiple linear regression) are presented. Comparable to physical and chemical variables certain fields were also characterised by soil biological variables. Main factors of cereal N-yield were pre crop, crop rotation, soil type and soil organic matter content (SOM). Soil biological variables had only a low influence. Nitrogen availability was affected by physical and biological soil factors, the weather and management measures as straw...

Samenbürtige Erreger in Saat- und Erntegut von Erbsen und Fababohnen auf Ökobetrieben Organic Eprints
Finckh, Maria R.; Saeed, M.F.; Schmidt, Harald; Bruns, Christian.
A total of 39 organic faba bean and 59 pea seed lots obtained during 2009-2011 from 32 organic farms throughout Germany were assessed for seed-borne fungi. Seed samples collected from the harvested fields grown from these seed lots were also assessed. The focus in the pathogen identification was on the ascochyta blight complex pathogens Ascochyta pisi, Mycosphaerella pinodes and Phoma medicaginis in pea and A. fabae and P. medicaginis in faba bean and on Fusarium spp. Fusarium spp. were found only rarely on peas with 40 of the seed samples and 44 of the harvested samples free of Fusarium spp. and the maximum infestation rate of 12 % in one harvested sample. Eighteen of the sown and 40 of the harvested lots had infestation rates of > 10 % with the...

Status-Quo-Analyse zur Unkrautregulierung im ökologischen Arznei- und Gewürzpflanzenanbau in Bayern Organic Eprints
Heuberger, Heidi; Holzapfel, Christine; Blum, Hanna; Schmidt, Harald.
