BeeFarm – mapping resources for pollinators at the farm Organic Eprints

The aim of the BeeFarm project is to develop a farmer’s tool for assessing resources for bees at the farm. The tool includes a guided tour through the fields and semi-natural habitats of a farm, in order for the farmer to systematically assess the bee resources on the farm. The tool will make it possible for the farmers to identify resources, which are potentially limiting wild pollinator populations.

Bestøvende insekter øger udbyttet og kvaliteten af en lang række økonomisk vigtige europæiske afgrøder. Både Honningbier og vilde bestørevere som humlebier, enlige bier og svirrefluer er vigtige som bestøvere af afgrøder i Europa. I England er der for eksempel kun nok honningbier til at bestøve en tredjedel af de afgrøder, der rkæver denne service. Vilde bestøvere udfører således den støreste del af arbejdet.

Pollinating insect populations are generally declining at local, national and global scales, and several wild pollinator species are extinct or endangered. •Almost half of the Danish bumblebee species are on the red list. •Such declines present a critical threat to future agricultural production, but biodiversity of pollinating insects and insect-pollinated plants is also at risk. •Organic grasslands with a high proportion of herbs may provide a significant better habitat for pollinating insects, and in particular, well-managed hayfields with species flowering during the entire growing season.

Leys with high plant biodiversity as feed resources for pollinators Organic Eprints

Multispecies leys contain different ecosystem services, and feed resources for pollinators can possibly be one. The challenge is to construct grassland with different flowering species and with a continuous flowering without compromising yield and herbage quality. A field experiment was carried out to examine the effect of cutting strategy in different designed species mixtures on yield, herbage quality and flowering. Two main types of mixtures were examined. High productive grass/clover mixtures with chicory, ribwort plantain or caraway and lower productive two species mixtures with weak competitors, salad burnet or dandelion, together with either birdsfoot trefoil, red clover or lucerne. Produktionsgræsmarker som en del af sædskiftet leverer kvalitetsfoder, men biodiversiteten i disse marker er lav. Typisk findes der ud over hvid- og rødkløver kun to-tre andre urter i markerne. I projektet EcoServe (http://agrsci.au.dk/forskning/faciliteter/httpwwwokoplatformdk/planter/ecoserve/ ) undersøger vi om iblanding af flere urter i græsmarkerne øger funktionaliteten. Projektet er rettet imod økologisk produktion, men vil også være relevant for konventionelle landmænd.

Pollination. Presentation of selected projects. Integrated management of Natural Capital: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Organic Eprints

Pollination is vital to the maintenance both of wild plant communities and agro-ecosystems. Beside the well-known, domesticated honey bee, pollinators include e.g. hover flies, butterflies, bumblebees and solitary bees. Pollinators have declined along with the intensification of agriculture. Aarhus University investigates cause – effect relations involved in the decline of pollinators in order to assess the relative importance of different aspects of agricultural practice and land use. For instance, we investigate response patterns of wild pollinators to pesticides and develop indicators that quantify pesticide effects on flowering plants. Important challenges include interactions between man-made effects and environmental drivers such as climate change.
