A winter school in landscape agronomy and the synergies it created Inra
Moonen, A.C.; Galli, M.; Lardon, S.; Rapey, H.; Silvestri, N.; Benoit, M.; Thenail, C.; Marraccini, E.; Rizzo, D.; Debolini, M.; Barberi, P.; Bonari, E..
We present the experience of the second Winter School in Landscape Agronomy (WLSA) for PhD students in agronomy developed by a French-Italian team of researchers with various backgrounds but all working in an agronomical context which requies a landscape scale vision and concerns agro-environmental and territorial issues. The lack of a common language became evident and all reserachers recognised that contributions from different disciplines (agronomy, geography, landscape ecology, land management, etc.) could contribute to the development of an appropriate research mehtodology for the specific research questions. Hence a common conceptual framework was developed and a concepts and tools "glossary" was defined. The efficacy of the framework and glossary to...

Experiences from a winter school on landscape agronomy : stakes, difficulties, perspectives Inra
Rapey, H.; Lardon, S.; Galli, M.; Moonen, C.; Benoit, M.; Thenail, C.; Barberi, P.; Caron, P.; Marraccini, E.; Rizzo, D.; Bonari, E..
In the latest fifteen years, agronomic reserach has shown a growing interst for studies which link farm or field scale to landscape scale. Thus, agronomy is called to renew its research questions and methodologies, and as well its educational programmes. In this context, some French and Italian researchers interested in these topics, coming from different scientific fields but sharing interests on landscape scale issues in research and higher education, decided to join their efforts eround a common one-week educational programme on Landscape Agrocnomy for undergraduate and PhD students. Their aim has been to develop a new form of knowledge transfer and application on Landscape Agronomy approaches to students of SSA-Pisa (IT) and of the PhD School of...

Turpin, N.; Dupraz, P.; Thenail, C.; Joannon, A.; Baudry, J.; Bioteau, T.; Barkaoui, A..

Petit, S.; Thenail, C.; Chauvel, B.; Le Coeur, D.; Baudry, J..

Shaping the landscape : agricultural policies and local biodiversity schemes Inra
Turpin, N.; Dupraz, P.; Thenail, C.; Joannon, A.; Baudry, J.; Herviou, S.; Verburg, P..
This paper analyses the potential effect of local agro-environmental policies in promoting multifunctionality in a rural landscape, with a two-scale modelling framework: a regional scale for food demand and a local scale for the forces driving land use. The framework has been designed in four steps. First, the relative influence of the driving factors on the current land use pattern has been analysed. Two scenarios are designed that vary the external demand for the total land use, and alter more or less quickly the specific location factors that drive the landscape pattern. The first scenario considers trends in the external and internal driving forces. The second relies both on totally decoupled farm subsidies and unregulated housing growth. In both...

The contribution of crop-rotation organization in farms to crop-mosaic patterning at local landscape scales Inra
Thenail, C.; Joannon, A.; Capitaine, M.; Souchere, V.; Mignolet, C.; Schermann, N.; Di Pietro, F.; Pons, Y.; Gaucherel, C.; Viaud, V.; Baudry, J..
Farming activities are major drivers of the landscape-related ecological patterning because of their multiple influences on both non-arable and arable landscape elements and mosaics. Uncertainties still remain about the way individual farmer decisions and the aggregation of their activities in space contribute to these mosaics at local landscape scales, therefore about possible levers of action in farms for ensuring sustainable landscapes. The general objective of the present study was to give an assessment of the way farms contribute to crop-mosaic patterning at local landscape scales. We developed a method for comparing five contrasted local study cases of agriculture (five farm sets), by combining a statistical modeling of crop-rotation organization in...
