Abstract: Aims: Epiphytic bacteria, isolated from Deschampsia antarctica, were screened for their potential to inhibit the plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold disease of strawberry pseudofruits. This phytopathogenic fungus is more active and the disease is more serious in temperate climate where the temperatures are lower.

Mycotoxins are produced by the secondary metabolism of many fungi and can be found in almost 25% of the world?s agricultural commodities. These compounds are toxic to humans, animals, and plants and therefore, efforts should be made to avoid mycotoxin contamination in food and feed. Besides, up to 25% of all harvested fruits and vegetables are lost due to storage molds and/ or mycotoxin contamination and many methods have been applied to mitigate these issues, but most of them rely on the use of fungicides. Biological control of phytopathogenic fungi by endophytic actinomycetes isolated from maize (Zea mays l.). Repositório Alice

This work aimed a survey on the biodiversity of maize endophytic actinomycete, and an evaluation of their potential to control the phytopathogenic fungi. From several regions of São Paulo state, 40 strains were isolated from the healthy maize plants. The identification of these strains, based on morphological properties and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profile showed that most of them belonged to the Streptomyces genus. These isolates were first screened for the growth inhibition of phytopathogenic fungi and results showed that all the isolate were able to inhibit the development of at least one tested pathogen. Two selected isolates were then evaluated for the control of P. aphanidermatum in cucumber (Cucumis sativa L.) under greenhouse conditions....

Abstracts: Actinomycetes, especially those belonging to the genus Streptomyces, are economically important from a biotechnological standpoint: they produce antibiotics, anticancer compounds and a variety of bioactive substances that are potentially applicable in the agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. This paper combined accurate-mass electrospray tandem mass spectrometry in the full scan and product ion scan modes with compounds library data to identify the major compounds in the crude extract produced by Streptomyces sp. A novel gram-positive, aerobic, actinobacterial strain, CMAA 1362T, was isolated from marine sponge Scopalina ruetzleri collected in the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago. São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago (former Saint Paul`s Rocks) liaison the São Paulo Fracture Zone, 1,010 km northeast from Brazilian mainland in the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Brazil (0°54?57?N; 29°20\'41\"W). It is one of the smallest and most isolated archipelagos in the world, with 420 m across, 18 m height and 1.7 ha. Insects in the suborder Heteroptera, the so-called true bugs, include over 40,000 species worldwide. This insect group includes many important agricultural pests and disease vectors, which often have bacterial symbionts associated with them. Some symbionts have coevolved with their hosts to the extent that host fitness is compromised with the removal or alteration of their symbiont. Streptomyces sp. ASBV-1 reduces aflatoxin accumulation by Aspergillus parasiticus in peanut grains. Repositório Alice

Aims: To evaluate the ability of Streptomyces sp. (strain ASBV-1) to restrict aflatoxin accumulation in peanut grains. Methods and Results: In the control of many phytopathogenic fungi the Streptomyces sp. ASBV-1 strain showed promise. An inhibitory test using this strain and A. parasiticus was conducted in peanut grains to evaluate the effects of this interaction on spore viability and aflatoxin accumulation. In some treatments the Streptomyces sp ASBV-1 strain reduced the viability of A. parasiticus spores by c. 85%, and inhibited aflatoxin accumulation in peanut grains. The values of these reductions ranged from 63 to 98% and from 67% to 96% for aflatoxins B1 and G1, respectively. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that Streptomyces sp. ASBV-1 is able to...

Microbes are extensively associated with insects, playing key roles in insect defense, nutrition and reproduction. Most of the associations reported involve Proteobacteria. Despite the fact that Actinobacteria associated with insects were shown to produce antibiotic barriers against pathogens to the hosts or to their food and nutrients, there are few studies focusing on their association with insects. Thus, we surveyed the Actinobacteria diversity on a specific region of the midgut of seven species of stinkbugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) known to carry a diversity of symbiotically-associated Proteobacteria.

Abstract: The increase on the worldwide influx of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) has inflicted a considerable challenge, due to its deleterious effects to live beings and pose a special threat to phyllosphere communities. However, UV-B influence on epiphytic yeasts associated with agricultural crops remains limited.
