Ackerwildkraut-Blühstreifen zur Integration autochthoner Ackerwildkräuter in ökologisch bewirtschafteten Ackerflächen Organic Eprints
Hotze, Carola; van Elsen, Dr. Thomas; Haase, Dr. Thorsten; Hess, Prof. Dr. Jürgen; Otto, Marius.
Are flower-strips composed of arable field plants a tool to integrate rare species into organic fields? In the surrounding of the Hessian State Domain Frankenhausen seeds of rare annual field plants were collected and reproduced. The autochthonous seeds and also the corn-cockle have been integrated into a mixture that has been tested to which extent the flower-strips are able to suppress soil-borne weed species. The vegetation of the arable field plant strips has been monitored by phytosociological relevees. A certain amount of seeds is needed to reach satisfactory results. The corncockle affords special management because of its biology and its possible toxicity.

The project “The integration of nature conservation into organic farming” tries to integrate goals of nature conservation and landscape development using a participatory process. A case study about the cooperation process between scientists and farmers on an experimental farm is presented. The empirical results of qualitative interviews identify attitudes and factors for risks and success of this process that determine whether a participatory approach can be an effective method for the development or the integration of nature protection strategies into organic farming.

Landschaftsseminare in der Sozialen Landwirtschaft - Neue Impulse zur Kulturlandschaftsentwicklung durch Ökolandbau Organic Eprints
van Elsen, Dr. Thomas.
Social farming adopts a multifunctional view of agriculture: the main products, in addition to saleable produce, are health and employment, education or therapy. Social farming includes agricultural enterprises and market gardens integrating people with physical, mental or emotional disabilities; farms which offer openings for the socially disadvantaged, for young offenders or those with learning difficulties, people with drug dependencies, the long-term unemployed and active senior citizens; school and kindergarten farms and many more. Prevention of illness, inclusion and a better quality of life are features and aims of social agriculture. Landscape seminars were carried out on social farms in order to elaborate aspects for landscape development...

Milcherzeugung und Soziale Arbeit - Arbeitsplätze für Menschen mit Behinderung in ökologisch wirtschaftenden Milchviehbetrieben Organic Eprints
Meidlinger, Shadée; van Elsen, Dr. Thomas.
The concepts of care farms that offer perspectives for people with handicaps differ in many ways. In this investigation four organic dairy farms providing jobs for handicapped men were visited. The results of the interviews with the stakeholders carried out on the farms are presented. A special focus is given to the relationship with the attending supervisor and the importance of cows and cattle for individual development. The outcomes give an insight into the daily routine farm work, the possibilities dairy and care farms offer to their clients, but also the difficulties and limits of integration.

Nachhaltige Landschaftsgestaltung auf Gut Adolphshof Organic Eprints
Debbert, Dipl.-Ing. Kai; van Elsen, Dr. Thomas.
The Demeter-farm “Gut Adolphshof” in Lower Saxony, Germany, is a good example for a conscious process of landscape development on farm level. How did the structure of the landscape change in the past, and which motives and questions for further development are crucial for the farmers today? − Based on the analysis of the landscape development in the past interviews were carried out with stakeholders who are involved in the planning and the present development of the farmland at Gut Adolphshof. During 180 years of cultivation a well structured and diverse cultural landscape has been produced. Todays’ challenge is to preserve and further develop this heritage by involving care farm activities (social therapy).

Weiterbildung von Managern und Führungskräften auf ökologisch wirtschaftenden Bauernhöfen Organic Eprints
May, BSc Christian; van Elsen, Dr. Thomas.
Are organic farms suited to offer educational training for managers and stakeholders working in leading positions in companies or institutions? Eight interviews with experts were carried out in 2007 and analysed by methods of qualitative social research. Substantial deficiencies of managers and executives lie in the field of soft skills and have their origin in the school system among other reasons. The basic precondition for a successful course/training is the transfer of items that were perceived and learned in daily life. The experts are convinced that organic farms are well suited to offer educational courses and seminars for managers and executives especially because of some characteristics of organic farming: holistic and systemic perception,...
