[[abstract]]In this study, the following two hybrid combinations were used: (A) Chia-nung 242 × Baritol (B) Taichung 65 × Baritol in which, parent varieties “Chia-nung 242” and “Taichung 65” are the most popular rice varieties in Taiwan. “Baritol” is an upland rice variety cultivated in the aboriginal region of Taiwan. By the use of two crossing combinations mentioned above, it is expected that through the successional generation of selections in the breeding program, new rice varieties with disease and drought resistant characters might be developed. Breeding for Disease and Insect Resistances in Keng Rice Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]Tainung 67 was crossed with Tetep, Carreon, Dawn and other donor parents followed by 3 to 4 consecutive backcrossings to Tainung 67 for improving its blast resistance. A genetic study on the BC1F1’s revealed that Tetep was most numerous in the genes resistant to 4 races of the blast fungus tested. An upland blast nursery with corn border lines facilitated the screen-testing of breeding lines. Many new selections from this breeding program were resistant to the blast disease and outyielded Tainung 67. Tainung 67 was also crossed with yellow dwarf resistant Firooz, followed by 2 consecutive backcrossings to Tainung 67. Breeding of Kenaf Through Mutation Induced by Gamma-rays and Thermal Neutrons Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]Gamma-irradiation of kenaf seeds of variety Everglades 71, at 5000, 10000, 15000 and 20000 K was investigated as a method of inducing potentially valuable mutants in kenaf. So did the thermal neutron treatments with the different intensities and duration of 0.6×108/cm2, 1.2×108/cm2, 1.8×108/cm2, 2.7×108/cm2, 3.6×108/cm2 and 7.2×108/cm2. Stimulative effects from irradiation were indicated in that seedling vigor and plant height were greater in the M0 15000 R treatment than in the control. As far as thermal neutron treatments were concerned, there was no great effects on either plant vigor or plant height except the death of all seedings in the NT 7.2×108/cm2 treatment. [[abstract]]Low temperatures are essential for cabbage flower induction. Most cabbage varieties cannot bloom and produce seeds in the tropics because of insufficiently low temperatures. Some shallow bolting types may flower completely in the highlands but fail to produce seed during the subsequent rainy season. According to the phasic development of cruciferous crops, plants were instead planted in the highlands for first phase (Thermo-phase) development, and then transplanted to the lowlands for second phase development. The materials used were tropical Yehscu cabbage which requires only shallow low temperatures, and the northern K-Y cross Chu -Chiou cabbage which requires a deeper degree of low temperatures. [[abstract]]Concentrations of total nonstructural carbohydrates, N, P and K in different plant parts of rice were analyzed at stages of plant development. Differences between crop seasons were also studied to investigate the physiological causes of low yield of the second crop rice. Accumulation of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) in cuims and leaf sheaths was most evident during the period of panicle development. Highest TNC concentration was recorded earlier in the second crop (25 days before heading) than in the first crop (18 days before hea(S)ding) for rices grown in Taichung. [[abstract]]水稻是本省最重要的糧食作物,如何有效地提高其單位面積產量及防止減產損失,實在是一個非常重要的問題。一般來說,增加水稻單位面積產量的方法,不外乎是利用育種方法,育出高產、耐肥、抗倒伏、抗病蟲害等優良品種,推廣給農民種植;另方面,可由改良耕作方法,例如密植,多施化學肥料等方法著手。本省近年來乃積極提倡水稻之『重肥密植』栽培法,以期在有限之耕地面積上,更進一步來提高稻作之單位面積產量。 氮肥通常被認為是作物增產所不可或缺之要素,一般水稻多施肥,收成亦多,但是為了增產而過度增施肥料,尤其是氮肥,和過度密植,則水稻往往會生長軟弱,成熟延遲,易遭病蟲為害,以及導致稻株倒伏,非但不能增產,反而會遭受更形嚴重之減產。因此,重肥密植,加以本省之颱風豪雨,使水稻倒伏問題成了減產的主因。所以要想利用『重肥密植』栽培法來提高稻作之單位面積產量,先決條件必須是種植具有高度抗倒伏能力之優良品種。 增加水稻之抗倒伏能力,固然可以利用育種方法,育出短稈、強稈、耐肥之優良品種,以解決倒伏問題,但是利用人工合成之植物生長抑制劑(plant growth retardants)來控制植物之生長,發育,使植株能抗倒伏或減少倒伏之損失,似亦不失為增產上可行方法之一。 近年來,歐美國家曾利用CCC(2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride)來處理大麥、小麥、燕麥、黑麥等禾穀類作物,皆證實了它確能使此等作物免於倒伏,且能增加產量。但利用CCC處理水稻的研究則尚不多覯,因此本試驗之目的,在探討不同的CCC噴施時期,不同用量,與在不同的氮肥用量之下,CCC對水稻生長、發育、倒伏及產量的影響,期明瞭CCC在本省稻作增產上之實用價值。 This research was designed to...

Component Analysis of Heterozygous Diallel Crosses Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]By constructing separate models for selfings and crossbreds based on their genotypic values, the genetic components analysis of Hayman and the combining ability analysis of Griffing for a diallel crosses were proved to be essentially equivalent and were combined to provide estimates of various genetic parameters of the sampled population from a heterozygous diallel. Difference in estimation of genetic parameters between homozygous diallel and heterozynous diallel were indicated. 本文依據異質型全互交自交後代與雜交後代不同基因型值分別建立其數學模式以證明在全互交分析上 Hayman 氏之遺傳成分分析法與 Griffing 氏之組合力分析法基本上為等義的,且綜合此二種分析法來分析異質型全互交以對取樣族群提供各項遺傳介量之估值。文中亦指出異質型全互交與同質型全互交在遺傳介量估算上之差異。
