This research aimed to access farmer participatory breeding in selecting the local upland rice varieties for desirable agronomic traits, good cooking and eating grain characteristics. The research carried out in the land reform area of amphoes Mueang, Lamae, Thung Tako in Chumphon province. The experiment comprised 12 upland rice varieties, 11 experimental lines and 1 standard check, by using the Randomized Complete Block design with 4 replications. Results indicated that farmers had selected Samdeaun, Phukhaotong, Nahngkruan, Lebnok and Dawkkham varieties for desirable agronomic traits with reasonable uniform panicle, good tillering ability, long panicle, many secondary branches, large and heavy grains. Integrated pest management trials were conducted in order to test pest management practices in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla provinces during 2011-2013 wet seasons. The data on population of insect pests, natural enemies, percent damage of diseases, percent damage of animal pests, weed species with wet weight, grain yield per rai, input costs, price of paddy and net benefit were collected comparing to the farmers’ practice trials. The results showed that the integrated pest management trials having more natural enemies than the farmers’ practice trials. Zoning of rice production potential in Thai rice area has been conducted from 2000 to 2013. The objectives of the project were 1) to define the potential of rice area in Thailand in term of soil suitability and productivity, 2) to create map of rice production zoning with appropriate recommendation. Methodology to run the project consisted of secondary data collection, field survey, crop cutting, field experiment, and mapping. Potential Zoning for rice production in the Lower North was carried out in Kamphaeng Phet and Tak Provinces during 2010-2011. The main objective was to create a database for area and appropriate technology for rice production. Procedures started with a survey on soil fertility and rice yield from the areas having soil suitable for rice growing. This was followed by the investigation on appropriate technologies to increase yield potential. Results have shown that the paddy fields in Kamphaeng Phet had an average pH of 5.45, 2.16% organic matter (O.M.), 19.23 ppm Phosphorus (P) and 76.83 ppm Potassium (K), respectively. Paddy soil in Sing Buri province can be classified into 4 levels as high suitability (soil group 3, 4, 7 and 15), moderately suitability (soil group 21), low suitability (soil group 33) and unsuitability (soil group 38). Moreover, yield production potential of those paddy soils can also be divided into 4 levels as more than 850 kg/rai (R1), 701 - 850 kg/rai (R2), 551 - 700 kg/rai (R3) and less than or equal to 550 kg/rai (R4). Field survey of 547 farmers plantation in Sing Buri province during 2007 - 2009 found that at least five rice varieties, which are PTT1, SPR1, RD31, CNT1 and PSL2 were grown. The studied of rice potential zoning in Sukhothai province during 2009-2011 found that in irrigated area most of paddy fields grew rice twice in dry season, the rest time in rainy season paddy fields were fallowed. Rice growing areas could be divided by the potential suitability of soil at 4 levels; high favorable, moderately suitable, less favorable and those suitable for other crops. Rice production potential zoning of Petchaburi province had been conducted from 2010 to 2012. Research methodology composted of general rice production information collection, soil sampling and crop cutting from farmer field, and field experiment. The research found that there were 4 major rice varieties growing in the area Chainat1, Phitsanulok2, Suphanburi60 and Suphanburi1. Damage was monitoring the situation of rice caused by the destruction of rodents in Thailand. The purpose was to consider the trend of the damage and to analyze rodent populations found in the fields all year round. Which allows farmers take preventive action to control rodents in rice field effectively. The environment in Thailand is always changing, such as temperature, rainfall, water level in rice fields, which resulting population outbreak of rat pest in rice field. The foods in nature have influence on reproductive of rats, and farmers planting rice several times a year resulting also propagation of rats increased rapidly.

This article concerned a summary report of social science research. The purpose of this research was to know the farmers' socio-economic situation, rice cultivation, rice cultivation practices, GAP standard practice in rice cultivation of the farmars and its factors related. The research was conduted by interviewing 3,575 farmers in 51 provinces during October 2007 to September 2008. It revealed the current situation of Thai farmers, rice cultivation practices, technologies used for rice production i.e. rice seed, soil fertility improvement, rice pest control and emphasizing on GAP standard practice by farmers. Many suggestion of the researchers were also given.

In the Upper North of Thailand, The biggest wet season rice area is in Chiang Rai province whereas the smallest is in Mae Hong Son. In each year, the rice area data from each organizes are different. Application of geographic information technologies by translating THEOS satellite image is an alternative method for rice area evaluation. It can be used to predict the rice yield in Chiang Rai as well as for the data management for food security of Mae Hong Son province. In three-line hybrid rice system, development of parental lines by backcrossing and early generation testing for combining ability is a method used for developing CMS lines (A line) and restorer lines (R line) simultaneously. In this study F3 progenies from 15 crosses of maintainers (B line) were backcrossed to their respective A lines, and 6 crosses and 46 isogenic lines produced. Completely sterile backcross progenies were found in 3 crosses, i.e., IR79156A//IR79156B/CNT1, IR80156A//IR80156B/IR46R and IR80156A//IR80156B/SPR1. Survey and classification of highland rice cultivation areas to indicate acid soil crisis was conducted on altitude 700 meters above sea level. Soil sampling was conducted form 7 districts of Mae Hong Son province are namely Muang, Khun Yuam, Mae La Noi, Mae Sariang, Sop Muey, Pai and Pang Ma Pha in the year 2012-2013. A total of 115 soil samples were consisting of 68 paddies and 47 upland conditions. Soil samples were analysis to find out the soil pH. The result showed that the strongly acid, moderately acid and slightly acid are 39.13, 21.74 and 20.86 percentages, respectively. Results of rice production technologies management for reducing cost of rice production in irrigated area program in the year 2010 to 2011 showed that the farmers who joined to this project could reduce production cost of 954 - 2,734 baht/rai, the yield was not reduced, but increased in some cases. To evaluate the adoption, a competition for reducing rice production cost was set for farmers’ adaptation of the knowledge from the project to their field by themselves. The competition was set at Klong 10 subdistrinct, Nongjok distrinct, Bangkok. The result showed that the farmers could reduce the cost as much as 3,734 baht/ton of paddy. The highest cost was 8,850 baht/ton of paddy because of land leveling cost. However the farmers could reduce production cost...

This study reviews the situation of farm mechanization in rice production. Factors affecting labor productivity in rice production, both first and second cropping seasons in 2010/2011, was analyzed using quantile regression and ordinary least square models. The results reveal that increasing farm size would increase labor productivity in both first and second cropping seasons while laborsaving technology would increase labor productivity only in the first cropping season. Thus, increasing farm size, investment in research and development of labor-saving technology, and supporting the appropriate use of labor-saving technology will improve labor productivity in a labor shortage situation.
