Buffering action of acetate on hydrogen production by Ethanoligenens harbinense B49 Electron. J. Biotechnol.

The buffering effect of acetate on hydrogen production during glucose fermentation by Ethanoligenens harbinense B49 was investigated compared to phosphate, a widely used fermentative hydrogen production buffer. Specific concentrations of sodium acetate or phosphate were added to batch cultures, and the effects on hydrogen production were comparatively analyzed using a modified Gompertz model. Adding 50 mM acetate or phosphate suppressed the hydrogen production peak and slightly extended the lag phase. However, the overall hydrogen yields were 113.5 and 108.5 mmol/L, respectively, and the final pH was effectively controlled. Acetate buffered against hydrogen production more effectively than did phosphate, promoting cell growth and preventing decreased pH....

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the production of methane, carbon dioxide, and volatile fatty acids and changes in ruminal pH in vitro with oilseed press cakes inclusion, such as, cottonseed, sunflower, castor bean, moringa and jatropha at four different levels (0, 30, 50 and 70%) in replacement to the sugarcane in ruminant feeding using semi-automated in vitro technique. The byproduct that produced less CO2 was cottonseed cake (p = 0.0059). The cakes that produced the least amount of CH4 were moringa at 70% (p < 0.05) and cottonseed at 70% levels (p < 0.0001). This study was realized to evaluate the production of gas and volatile fatty acids when glycerin was used to replace four forage species through the use of a semi-automated technique in vitro. The experimental design included 4 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments consisted of increasing levels of glycerin (0, 30, 50 and 70%), which was used to replace the forage plants Elephant grass, sugar cane silage, corn silage and Brachiaria grass. Replacement of the Brachiaria and Elephant grasses with glycerin linearly reduced the production of methane and carbon dioxide and ammonia nitrogen and had a positive effect on forage quality (p < 0.05).
