A JAPÁN GAZDASÁG NÉHÁNY JELLEGZETESSÉGE A XXI. SZÁZAD FORDULÓJÁN AgEcon
Tompe, Ferenc.
Ezek a jelenségek újból felkeltették a szakemberek érdeklődését a japán gazdaság iránt, egyfelől az előállt helyzet okainak feltárására, másfelől a megol-dások keresésére. A japán gazdaság megújulásának feltételeit döntően azok a té-nyezők határozzák meg, amelyek az elmúlt tíz évben a gyengélkedés okaiként je-lölhetők meg, mint pl. a hosszú ideig tartó...

Agricultural policies in India: Producer Support Estimates 1985-2002 AgEcon
Mullen, Kathleen; Orden, David; Gulati, Ashok.
Since the early 1990s, India has undergone substantial economic policy reform and economic growth. Though reforms in agricultural policy have lagged those in other sectors, they have nonetheless created a somewhat more open economic orientation. In this study, we evaluate the protection and support versus disprotection of agriculture in India. Our methodology involves examining market price support (MPS) for eleven crops, the expenditures on input subsidies benefiting farmers (for fertilizer, electricity and irrigation), and product-specific and total producer support estimates (PSEs) over the period 1985-2002. We draw on the extensive price-comparison and subsidy-measurement data sets and analysis developed earlier by Gulati and his co-authors, often...

Agricultural production in Greater Sekhukhune: the future for food security in a poverty node of South Africa? AgEcon
Drimie, Scott; Germishuyse, T.; Rademeyer, L.; Schwabe, Craig.
This paper argues that within the range of complementary activities necessary to secure the food security of marginalised groups in South Africa in places such as Greater Sekhukhune, the aspect of agricultural production is often neglected. A comprehensive approach to food security should focus on exploiting opportunities around increasing local food availability through production, as well as stimulating food accessibility by, for example, supporting small enterprises through micro-credit, and supporting food utilisation through education. In this way a range of options is created that vulnerable people can adopt to promote their livelihoods beyond survivalist strategies. This paper explores the issue of agricultural production within Greater Sekhukhune...

Agricultural Productivity in the United States AgEcon
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Yee, Jet; Ball, V. Eldon; Nehring, Richard F..
Increased productivity is a key to a healthy and thriving economy. Consequently, the trend in productivity, economywide, is one of the most closely watched of our common economic performance indicators. Agriculture, in particular, has been a very successful sector of the U.S. economy in terms of productivity growth. The U.S. farm sector has provided an abundance of output while using inputs efficiently. Agricultural productivity growth has been an important source of U.S. economic growth throughout the century, but the years since 1940 have seen an even faster growth in agricultural productivity. The annual average increase in productivity from 1948 to 1994 was 1.94 percent. This reflects an annual growth in output of 1.88 percent per year and an actual...

Agriculture’s contribution to rural viability: An approach to estimate regional economic impacts of agricultural policy in Swiss case study regions AgEcon
Kopainsky, Birgit; Flury, Christian; Giuliani, Gianluca.
This paper develops a thorough yet easily implementable approach to measuring agriculture’s contribution to rural viability. The approach is based on input-output modelling. It adopts a number of concepts from input-output modelling such as determining the explicit geographical origin of input requirements and the geographical destination of farm household expenditures without formerly developing an input-output table. The approach is applied to four case studies in the Swiss mountain regions and tested for three scenarios. Our results clarify the role that agriculture still plays in the context of rural viability. They demonstrate that agriculture’s contribution to rural viability differs considerably between the case study regions and that future...

An Application of Mixed Logit Estimation in the Analysis of Producers’ Stated Preferences AgEcon
Kipperberg, Gorm; Bond, Craig A.; Hoag, Dana L..
This paper analyzes Colorado Corn producers’ preferences over both private- and environmental public-good production system attributes. Current production practices are characterized by intensive water and chemical use, resulting in non-point source pollution to water bodies as well as soil erosion problems. Data from a stated preference survey are employed to analyze key attributes of experimentally configured irrigation systems, proposed as alternatives to current practices. Panel mixed logit estimations find positive preferences for profit, risk reduction, and, importantly, systems with less environmental impact in terms of nitrate leaching and soil erosion. The results also find presence of significant preference heterogeneity and a complementary...

Beginning Farmers and Ranchers AgEcon
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Newton, Doris J..
USDA defines beginning farmers and ranchers as those who have operated a farm or ranch for 10 years or less either as a sole operator or with others who have operated a farm or ranch for 10 years or less. Beginning farmers tend to be younger than established farmers and to operate smaller farms or ranches, some of which may provide no annual production. Beginning farmers often face obstacles getting started, including high startup costs and limited availability of land. USDA—through the Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service—provides loans and conservation assistance to beginning farmers and ranchers. This report draws on data from annual surveys and the Census of Agriculture to provide policymakers with a better understanding...

Benefits of Protecting Rural Water Quality: An Empirical Analysis AgEcon
Crutchfield, Stephen R.; Feather, Peter; Hellerstein, Daniel.
Concerns about the impact of farm production on the quality of the Nation's drinking and recreational water resources have risen over the past 10 years. Because point sources of pollution were controlled first, agricultural nonpoint sources have become the Nation's largest remaining single water-quality problem. Both public and private costs of policies that address the conflict between agricultural production and water quality are relevant, but measuring the off-farm benefits and costs of changing water quality is difficult. Many of the values placed on these resources are not measured in traditional ways through market prices. This report explores the use of nonmarket valuation methods to estimate the benefits of protecting or improving rural water...

CHANGES IN AGRICULTURAL MARKETS IN TRANSITION ECONOMIES AgEcon
Liefert, William M.; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
Economic reform in the transition economies of the former Soviet bloc has transformed the volume and mix of these economies' agricultural production, consumption, and trade. Output drops in most countries have ranged from 25 to 50 percent. The livestock sector has been hit particularly hard, all but eliminating U.S. grain exports to the region. This report concludes that the output decline has been an inevitable part of market reform and that the main goal of agricultural policy in the transition economies should not be to return output to pre-reform levels but to increase the productivity of input use. Although reform has created a food security problem in some countries, the cause of the problem is not insufficient food supplies, but rather inadequate...

Characteristics of Canada's Diverse Farm Sector AgEcon
Niekamp, Deborah.
Much of the research in the past on farm structure and economic well-being focused almost exclusively on farms based on their size, their contribution to total agricultural production, or national net farm income. These aggregate measures do not by themselves adequately explain how well the farm is functioning. Confidence in highly aggregated measures of financial performance in agriculture needs to be tempered with an understanding of the diversity that exists within the farm sector. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) developed a farm typology, to better explain why particular groups respond differently. The AAFC typology classifies farms into more homogeneous groups based on five factors: organizational structure (non-family farms) age (retirement...

China's Ongoing Agricultural Modernization: Challenges Remain After 30 Years of Reform AgEcon
Lohmar, Bryan; Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Tuan, Francis C.; Hansen, James M..
Thirty years ago, China began implementing a series of reforms to improve efficiency in agricultural production. These, and subsequent, reforms reshaped China’s position in the world economy. China’s rapid economic development and transformation from a planned to a market-oriented economy, however, has reached a stage where further efficiency gains in agricultural production will likely hinge on the development of modern market-supporting institutions. The development of market-supporting institutions in China will bring about long-term and sustainable benefits to producers and consumers in China and the global agricultural economy. This report provides an overview of current issues in China’s agricultural development, policy responses to these issues, and...

Cost of opportunity: economic competitiveness of community forest management by land use. Repositório Alice
SILVA, D. A. S. da; FERREIRA, R. L. C.; GUEDES, M. C.; SOUSA, C. S. C. de; LIMA, R. B. de; ALMEIDA, A. S. de; SILVA, E. F. da.
The structuring of a consolidated forest economy in the Amazon region would be an unprecedented contribution to the conservation and socioeconomics of the rural community. Therefore, the objective of this work was to conduct a literature review on the economic competitiveness of multiple-use community-forest management by land use in the Amazon region and thus elucidate the main causes and possible solutions for strengthening and enhancing a family-based forest economy in the region. Studies reported that despite the importance of the forest, the financial attractiveness of forest production under community-forest management was relatively limited when compared to other land-use options, such as agriculture. This was due to a set of factors, such as high...
