A hízott liba- és kacsamáj termelése, valamint piaci kihívásai AgEcon
Kozak, Janos.
A világ májtermelésének növekedése azt jelzi, hogy e különleges termék fogyasztása iránti igény várhatóan hosszabb távon fennmarad. A termelés szerkezetében azonban átrendeződés várható az olcsóbb hízott kacsamáj javára. Ugyanakkor a libamáj a hízottmáj-termékcsoportban csúcsminőség marad. Magyarország, mivel Franciaország után a legnagyobb májtermelő ország, továbbra is mindkét termék előállításában érdekelt lesz. Hazánk már évtizedek óta a világ vezető libamájtermelő országa, de a jövőben új piaci versenytársak (pl. Kína) megjelenésére is számíthat a világ májkereskedelmében. Emellett más országok növekvő kacsamájtermelése is egyre nehezebbé teszi a magyarországi májtermékek külpiaci értékesítését. Mivel a jelenlegi gyakorlattól eltérő módon hízott májat...

A Multicommodity EU Policy Framework Incorporating Public Good Criteria into the Direct Payment System in Agriculture AgEcon
Dunne, W.; O'Connell, J.J..
For decades the CAP has been the major influence in shaping EU agriculture and food production. The economic and policy environment in the EU is now very different from that which prevailed in the earlier decades. The future economic, social and geographic diversity of the EU will be further increased by enlargement. Agricultural policies and the related operational frameworks will inevitably change to accommodate this added diversity and the changing societal and consumer values. This paper evaluates how the current shape of EU agriculture has been influenced by the reforms to date. It also attempts to focus on where EU farming may be, or wish to go, over the next decade. The evaluation is restricted to the beef sector as it has been to the forefront in...

A Multi-Criteria Decision Framework for Animal Welfare Policy AgEcon
Hellstrom, J.; Bicknell, Kathryn.
Policy decisions aimed at improving farm animal welfare involve balancing several competing objectives. Not only do such decisions involve tradeoffs between social, ethical, economic and welfare considerations, animal welfare itself is a multi-dimensional concept and some husbandry practices may satisfy some welfare needs but fail to satisfy others. Multi-criteria decision analysis is a decision theoretic tool that has been used to inform decision making in fields such as environmental policy, urban and regional planning, and biosecurity – all of which are characterised by competing goals and multiple stake-holders. This paper presents a preliminary multi-criteria framework for the analysis of animal welfare policies at the national level using indoor...

A Structural Equation Model of the Factors Influencing British Consumers’ Behaviour towards Animal Welfare AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; McVittie, Alistair; Hubbard, Carmen; Stott, Alistair W..
Results of national and pan-European consumer surveys and the growth in the demand for so-called “animal friendly” food products suggest that consumers within the European Union show a high level of concern for the welfare of farm animals. This paper analyses the determinants of British consumers’ behaviour towards animal welfare using structural equation models (SEM) with observed and latent variables. SEM is a statistical technique for testing and estimating relationships amongst variables, using a combination of statistical data and qualitative causal assumptions. We used a data set collected in 2005 through face-to-face interviews of 654 consumers in England. We analysed the range of statements in existing literature on consumers’ behaviour towards...

Alves, Ana Julia Silva e; Guilloux, Aline Gil Alves; Zetun, Carolina Ballarini; Polo, Gina; Braga, Guilherme Basseto; Panachão, Ligia Issberner; Santos, Oswaldo; Dias, Ricardo Augusto.
The relinquishment of animals is frequent and common throughout all the Latin America, causing losses in the areas of public health, social, ecological, economic and animal welfare. Among the main causes of pet relinquishment are behavioral problems, lack of space in houses, the lifestyle of the owner, lack of information about the owner responsibilities and costs associated with the keeping of animals. The number of laws related to animal welfare has been growing, due to pressure from the civil population but abandoned animals are a problem of responsibility of all the society. The role of the veterinarian is to inform and educate their customers about the topic. Reduce the relinquishment animal is a public challenge with cultural and long-term solution,...

Animal Welfare in the CAP and Large-Scale Distribution. Public Social Policy and Consumer Trust AgEcon
Arfini, Filippo; Cernicchiaro, Sabrina; Mancini, Maria Cecilia.
This paper studies the role of animal welfare (AW) institutionally and for large scale retail and its value in consolidating trust between institutions-taxpayers and large scale retail-consumers. The first section analyses AW in the new CAP and current strategies of retail with regard to expectations of taxpayers and consumers respectively. The second section analyses interviews on AW carried out in large scale and traditional retailing on the Italian market, and puts forward short and medium term forecasts of the importance that AW could have in distribution strategies in trust building with consumers and in relationships with institutional and other interlocutors of the retail trade.

Beef Consumer Preferences in Chile: Importance of Quality Attribute Differentiators on the Purchase Decision Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Villalobos,Pablo; Padilla,Carlos; Ponce,Cristian; Rojas,Álvaro.
Agrifood markets worldwide have focused on searching for new quality attribute differentiators, which capture the attention of consumers and meet their needs. The purpose of this research was to determine the importance of a set of quality attribute differentiators associated with a beef cut on the choice behavior of the Chilean consumer. The evaluated differentiating characteristics were: price, origin, production method, and quality assurance. A total of 750 subjects were surveyed in the following cities: Talca, Rancagua, and Santiago. Conjoint analysis was carried out to estimate the impact of the assessed attributes on the purchase decision of the consumers polled. Findings point out that the quality attribute differentiators significantly influence...

Brand Information Mitigating Negative Shocks on Animal Welfare: Is It More Effective to “Distract” Consumers or Make Them Aware? AgEcon
Dentoni, Domenico; Tonsor, Glynn T.; Calantone, Roger J.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
To create and sustain a competitive advantage in markets that increasingly value animal welfare attributes, meat companies need to meet public and private production standards while communicating to final consumers through their brands. Data are collected from a representative sample of 460 U.S. residents through an on-line experiment on McDonald’s chicken breast sandwiches and analyzed with Latent Growth Modeling. This study assesses which content of positive brand information effectively mitigates the risk of negative information shocks on animal welfare. On average, brand information has the same positive impact on consumers’ beliefs and attitudes, regardless of whether it is related or unrelated to animal welfare. However, there is strong market...

Consumer Perception of Animal Welfare and Livestock Production in the Araucania Region , Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Schnettler M,Berta; Vidal M,Ricardo; Silva F,Roberto; Vallejos C,Lisette; Sepúlveda B,Néstor.
Given the importance of animal welfare (AW) in developed countries, a survey was carried out among 384 consumers in Temuco, Chile, to establish their knowledge and perceptions about animals handling during production, to detect preferences for meat produced under AW principles, their willingness to pay a higher price for this and to distinguish different consumer segments. Approximately 60% of people surveyed knew about livestock management practices, half of them considered that these practices had a negative effect on the animals, but only 32.1% have changed their meat consumption habits due to this. Seventy percent of the people surveyed had over 50% of knowledge about AW aspects. There is a strong preference and willingness to pay a higher price for...

Consumer Preferences for Animal Welfare Attributes: The Case of Gestation Crates AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Olynk, Nicole J.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Animal welfare concerns are having dramatic impacts on food and livestock markets. Here we examine consumer preferences for pork products with a focus on use of gestation crates. We examine underlying consumer valuations of pork attributes while considering preference heterogeneity as well as voluntary and legislative alternatives in producing gestation crate-free pork. Our results suggest that prohibiting swine producers from using gestation crates fails to improve consumer welfare in the presence of a labeling scheme documenting voluntary disadoption of gestation crates. Consumers are found to implicitly associate animal welfare attributes with smaller farms. Preference heterogeneity drives notably diverse consumer welfare impacts when pork produced with...
