Antibacterial activity of the Antarctic bacterium Janthinobacterium sp: SMN 33.6 against multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Asencio,Geraldine; Lavin,Paris; Alegría,Karen; Domínguez,Mariana; Bello,Helia; González-Rocha,Gerardo; González-Aravena,Marcelo.
Background The increment of resistant strains to commonly used antibiotics in clinical practices places in evidence the urgent need to search for new compounds with antibacterial activity. The adaptations that Antarctic microorganisms have developed, due to the extreme environment that they inhabit, promote them as a potential new source of active compounds for the control of microorganisms causing infections associated with health care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of an ethanol extract of the Antarctic bacterium Janthinobacterium sp., strain SMN 33.6, against nosocomial multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Results Inhibitory activity against human Gram-negative bacterial pathogens, with concentrations that varied...

Bacterial Resistance and the Optimal Use of Antibiotics AgEcon
Laxminarayan, Ramanan.
The increasing resistance of harmful biological organisms (bacteria, parasites, and pests) to selection pressure from the widespread use of control agents such as antibiotics, antimalarials, and pesticides is a serious problem in both medicine and agriculture. Modeling resistance-or, conversely, the effectiveness of these control agents as a biological resource-yields insights into how these agents should be optimally managed to maximize their economic benefit to society. This paper uses a model of evolution of bacterial resistance to antibiotics-in which resistance places an evolutionary disadvantage on the resistant organism-to develop a simple sequential algorithm of optimal antibiotic use. Although the solution to this problem follows the...

Elimination of antibiotic multi-resistant salmonella typhimurium from swine waste water by microalgae-induced antibacterial mechanisms. Repositório Alice
MEZZARI, M. P.; PRANDINI, J. M.; KICH, J. D.; SILVA, M. L. B. da.
Abstract: The effect of microalgae-based swine waste water treatment on the removal of antibiotic multi-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium was investigated. Photobioreactors (PBRs) containing diluted swine digestate with and without microalgae Scenedesmus spp. were inoculated with S. Typhimurium (108 Colony Forming Units per milliliters - CFU mL-1). Viable cells of S. Typhimurium were quantified over time by plate counts and qPCR amplification of the Salmonella invasion gene activator, hilA. In the absence of microalgae, S. Typhimurium concentrations increased 1.5 log cells mL-1 in 96 h. In the presence of microalgae, S. Typhimurium was completely eradicated within 48 h. In the PBRs with controlled pH (6.8 ± 0.8), concentration of S....

Frequency of transferable multiple antibiotic resistance amongst coliform bacteria isolated from a treated sewage effluent in Antofagasta, Chile Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Silva,Juan; Castillo,Gabriela; Callejas,Lorena; López,Héctor; Olmos,Janet.
Antibiotic-resistant coliform bacteria from raw and treated water from activated sludge of a sewage treatment plant were isolated on eosin methylene blue agar (EMB) plates in the separate presence of ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and streptomycin. Antibiotic resistant coliforms obtained from inflow and effluent waters were studied to determine influences of treatment on the species composition, resistance patterns and transferable resistance in these bacteria. The bacterial counts obtained showed a high proportion of antibiotic resistant coliforms in the treated effluent. The resistant coliform species were eliminated at different rates by the treatment. Escherichia coli decreased, whereas the proportion of Klebsiella sp increased. The...

Resistência anti-helmíntica em caprinos no município de Mossoró-RN. Repositório Alice
COELHO, W. A. C..

Survey of Salmonella spp. in beef meat for export at slaughterhouses in Brazil. Repositório Alice
BIER, D.; KICH, J. D.; DUARTE, S. C.; SILVA, M. R.; VALSONI, L. M.; RAMOS, C. A. N.; RODRIGUES, D. P.; ARAUJO, F. R..
The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of Salmonella spp. in samples collected from beef meat at three points of the slaughter line (after skinning, washing and cooling) at three slaughterhouses in Brazil that export meat. Detection was based on ISO 6579:2002 and confirmed by PCR and qPCR. The isolates were typified using slide agglutination tests and PFGE. The antibiotic sensitivity profile was determined using the disk diffusion method. Contamination was detected in only one slaughterhouse. The overall frequency of contamination by Salmonella spp. was 6.7% of carcasses (6/90) and 2.6% of carcass surface samples (7/270). All isolates were confirmed by PCR and qPCR. The serological analysis and the PFGE showed a single profile:...
