Thrce ditferent methodologies frequently employed to evaluate the indexes that report the antioxidant capabilities of pure compounds and/or complex mixtures of antioxidants are applied to a series of mono- and polyphenols, as well as to two wine (red and white) samples. These methodologies are based on the bleaching of a stable radical, the effect of the additive upon luminol chemiluminescence induced by peroxyl radicals, and the effect of the additive upon the bleaching of the fluorescence from a dye molecule. En el presente trabajo se estudia la capacidad antioxidante de varios extractos, acuosos e hidro-alcohólicos obtenidos a partir de algas y plantas marinas de la plataforma insular cubana. A todos los extractos se les determinó su contenido de polifenoles, proteínas, lípidos y azúcares totales, así como la actividad Superóxido Dismutasa (SOD). Todos los extractos evaluados mostraron una buena actividad antioxidante, con una CE50 inferior de 0,4 mg.ml-1. El contenido de polifenoles en los extractos de Ulva fasciata es menor el de las otras especies, aunque tanto el extracto hidro-alcohólico como el del alga seca e irradiada de dicha especie presentan una buena actividad antioxidante. Abstract: Diphenyl diselenide (Ph2Se2) is an organic selenium compound that is known for its antioxidant characteristics. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether Ph2Se2 in quail (Coturnix japonica) diets influences the oxidative/antioxidant status and meat quality. Materials and methods. Four diets (0; 0.3; 0.6; 0.9 ppm Ph2Se2) were provided to 56 male quails (Coturnix japonica) distributed in a completely randomized design with 14 repetitions in order to check whether (PhSe)2 would change their blood and tissue oxidative/antioxidant status, which would lead to an improvement in the meat quality. Anthocyanins are secondary plant metabolites responsible for the blue, purple, and red color of many plant tissues. The phenolic structure of anthocyanins conveys marked antioxidant activity in model systems via donation of electrons or hydrogen atoms from hydroxyl moieties to free radicals. Dietary intakes of anthocyanins may exceed 200 mg/day, however, little is known about their antioxidant potency in vivo. The antioxidant activity of Portuguese honeys was evaluated considering the different contribution of entire samples and phenolic extracts. Several chemical and biochemical assays were used to screen the antioxidant properties of entire honeys with different colour intensity and phenolic extracts: reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging capacity, and inhibition of lipid peroxidation using the b-carotene linoleate model system and the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay. Ascorbate protects (+)-catechin from oxidation both in a pure chemical system and human plasma Biol. Res.

We evaluated the interaction between ascorbic acid (AA) and (+)-catechin (CTCH) in potassium phosphate solution, pH 7.4 (PPS) and in human plasma. In both systems, the oxidation was started by adding 2,2’-azobis-(2-amidinopropane) clorhidrate (AAPH). The concentrations of AA and CTCH were determined by HPLC using electrochemical detection. In PPS, CTCH was oxidized by AAPH (50 muM), in either the absence or presence of different initial concentrations of AA (25-200 muM). In the presence of AA, CTCH depletion was delayed, an effect that was dependent upon the initial concentration of AA. Oat (Avena sativa L.) is a cereal grain, its seeds are rich in nutrients, is consumed as whole grain with health benefits fot humans due to its antioxidants, such as the avenanthtamides (Avns). The contents of Avns 2c, 2f and 2p were evaluated by HPLC in groats and hulls of oat varieties Chihuahua, Cuauhtemoc, Raima and Avemex cultivated in Durango, México. The association of these Avns with protein, fat, crude fiber and ash of oat was also investigated. A 4x2 bifactorial design was used, with the number of varieties and groats ot hulls as factors. The use of natural products isolated from mushrooms, included inedible species, against infection, cancer diseases and other oxidative-stress related diseases is one of the cornerstones of modern medicine. In the present work, the antioxidant molecule profiles of inedible mushroom species were evaluated and compared with those of edible species. The order of antioxidant abundance found in inedible wild mushrooms was: phenolics > flavonoids > ascorbic acid > tocopherols > carotenoids, similar to that of edible species. Callus induction and plant regeneration of Ulex europaeus Electron. J. Biotechnol.

A callus induction and plant regeneration protocol was developed from leaf and thorn explants for the plant Ulex europaeus. Explants were incubated on 2% sucrose half-strength Murashige and Skoog Medium (MS) with various combinations of plant growth regulators and antioxidants. The best frequency of callus and shoot formation was obtained with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) 1 mg/l x kinetin (Kin) 0.2 mg/l (DK Medium; callus induction) and zeatin (Z) 1 mg/l (DK medium; shoot induction). Both media were supplemented with ascorbic acid 200 mg/l to prevent browning and death of the explants.
