Chironomidae from Eastern Amazon: understanding the differences of land-use on functional feeding groups. Repositório Alice
SONODA, K. C.; MONTELES, J. S.; FERREIRA, A.; GERHARD, P..
Abstract: Deforestation for agricultural purposes is the most dangerous human action against the conservation of the Brazilian Amazon Forest; its rates reached almost 20% of the original forested area. Many studies have been conducted on Chironomidae systematics and ecology over the Amazon biome, but most concerned the Central Amazon, while little is known about Chironomidae diversity and the effects of land development and agriculture intensification on the aquatic biota from Eastern Brazilian Amazon. The present study analyzed the effects of different land-use and land-cover on Chironomidae assemblages. Land-Use and Land-Cover (LULC) at the riparian zone were assessed from satellite imagery and three categories were defined: Forest, Secondary (Capoeira)...

Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera) associated with stones in a first-order Atlantic Forest stream RChHN
ROSA,BEATRIZ F. J. V; VASQUES,MONIQUE; ALVES,ROBERTO G.
Stones are stable substrates in streams, usually sheltering high richness and abundance of invertebrates. To investigate the structure of the Chironomidae assemblages associated with stones in a first-order stream located in an Atlantic Forest reserve in two periods of the year, stones with diameters from 10 cm to 25 cm were collected along a stretch of 100 m in riffle areas, during three months in the dry season and three months in the rainy season. The structure of the community was analyzed for each period through calculation of observed richness, Shannon's diversity (H'), and Pielou's evenness. The ordination of the samples from the dry and rainy seasons was evaluated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and the presence of indicator species in...

Butakka, Cristina Márcia de Menezes; Universidade do Mato Grosso; Trivinho-Strixino, Susana; Universidade Federal de São Carlos; Pinha, Gisele Daiane; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Takeda, Alice Michiyo; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
To investigate the emergence of Chironomidae in different habitats of a floodplain lake of the upper Paraná river floodplain, four collection points were established: marginal regions (one with numerous macrophytes species, other dominated by only Polygonum sp.), central region and linking channel. Adults were captured by surface emergence traps assembled every three months, from May 2001 to March 2002. The traps remained for a period of about 48 hours, obtaining quantitative data for richness and abundance. 944 adults distributed into three subfamilies and 40 taxa were captured. The taxa identified at the species level were: Goeldichironomus neopictus, G. petiolicola, G. maculatus, Tanytarsus ligulatus, Parachironomus atroari, P. guarani and P. cayapo....

ESCAPE OR BE PREYED: NEW RECORDS AND CURRENT KNOWLEDGE ON PREDATORS OF PSEUDINAE FROGS (ANURA: HYLIDAE) IN SOUTH AMERICA Acta biol.Colomb.
LANDGREF FILHO,Paulo; AOKI,Camila; SOUSA,Daiene Louveira Hokama de; SOUZA,Edivaldo Oliveira de; BRANDÃO,Reuber Albuquerque; ÁVILA,Robson Waldemar; ODA,Fabrício Hiroiuki.
ABSTRACT Neotropical amphibians play important roles as preys and predators in freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. The subfamily Pseudinae includes small and medium-sized frogs within three genera representing 13 valid species. Most published records of predation on Pseudinae frogs are anecdotic and scarce. Herein, we provide five new reports of predation and presenting a detailed literature review on Pseudinae predation, with 15 studies published between 1983-2017. Pseudinae species were preyed at both day and night by a wide variety of predators, principally birds. Adults were preyed upon more frequently than juveniles and tadpoles. In the present study, most predators were diurnal, with birds accounting for most records. A variety of invertebrates...

Explaining dissimilarities in macroinvertebrate assemblages among stream sites using environmental variables Rev. Bras. Zool.
Melo,Adriano S..
The relationship between community structure and environmental factors usually varies according to ecosystem type, group of organisms, and spatial scale. In this study I assessed whether dissimilarities among assemblages of stream macroinvertebrates are related to differences in environmental variables. Data consisted of macroinvertebrate samples of 10 stream sites during the dry season. Seven environmental variables were assessed. The relationship among dissimilarities in assemblage structure and dissimilarities in environmental variables was assessed using the BioEnv approach. Conductivity and measures related to stream size were the most important variables. However, part of the correlation with conductivity was due to the high value observed in a...

First records of four species of the genus Americabaetis (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) for Argentina Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Bardavid,Sofía; Nieto,Carolina.
The family Baetidae is the most diverse family into the Order Ephemeroptera and it has an almost cosmopolitan distribution. The genus Americabaetis Kluge was described in 1992 and actually it has 19 known species with a clearly Neotropical distribution. Although this genus is very common in lotic aquatic systems, it has been poorly studied in Argentina. Herein, we report four species for this country originally described from Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay: A. labiosus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, A. longetron Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, A. mecistognathus Salles & Raimundi, A. titthion Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty.

The life history and survival of Neochetina in Lake Victoria basin: Basis for biological weed control OceanDocs
Ochiel, G.R.S.; Njoka, S.W.; Manyala, J.O.; Okeyo Owuor, J.B..
Using our own experimental data and published data, we review information on the control process of water hyacinth and its status in Lake Victoria basin, Kenya. Experimental results show that the mean fecundity of the two weevils is 290 and 237 eggs per female laid over a period of 16 weeks, with an adult longevity of 98 and 112 days for Neochetina bruchi and N. eichhorniae respectively. There was significant difference between the egg laying capacities of the two weevil species (p=0.002). The survival rate of the two species was significantly different (p<0.05) for all life stages except for larvae to pupa. There was no significant interaction between the species and the method of experimental egg setting (p<0.05). The fecundity of both N. bruchi...
