Recultivation of abandoned monoculture areas in Amazonia. Repositório Alice

The project concerns an experiment in recultivating a fallow rubber plantation of 19 ha by establishing mixed plantations of selected crops, mainly tree. In order to achieve sustainability, different crop combinations and different strategies for management of the spontaneous vegetation will be tested, and the crop systems will be stabilized by inoculation the plants with spores of mycorrhizal fungi. The experimental area was divided into five blocks with eighteen plots each to test four mixed cultivation systems, compared to four conventional monoculture systems. This second annual report of the project summarizes the activities between January and December 1996. During this year, the project left the preparotory stage of purchasing, importing and installing equipment and entered into the stage of routine data collection and analysis.The report is divided into two parts. In the main part, the project team is presented and its acitivities during the year 1996 are briefly summarized. The annexes give detailed accounts of selected research acitivities of the project.
