Antibacterial activity of Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Born) from the Indian coast against human pathogens Phyton

The antibacterial property of the red algae, Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Born) collected from the southwest coast of India (Indian Ocean) was evaluated against three multidrug resistant human pathogens. Four different solvents: ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, methanol and phosphate buffer saline (PBS) were used with this purpose. Dried samples extracted with methanol showed broadest and highest antimicrobial activity when compared to other solvents. However, PBS extract showed no antibacterial activity. The highly active compounds red alga, F. hillebrandii were fractionated and purified using different chromatographic systems, including reverse phase HPLC and GCMS. Abstract: Aims: Epiphytic bacteria, isolated from Deschampsia antarctica, were screened for their potential to inhibit the plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold disease of strawberry pseudofruits. This phytopathogenic fungus is more active and the disease is more serious in temperate climate where the temperatures are lower.

The antimicrobial properties of phenolic extracts of Portuguese wild edible mushroom species (Lactarius deliciosus, Sarcodon imbricatus and Tricholoma portentosum) against pathogens were investigated. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were evaluated for the entire mushroom, the cap and the stipe, separately; the portion of the mushroom used proved to be influenced in the results obtained, which are directly correlated with the content of total phenols and flavonoids in the extracts. The growth of Grampositive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis,) was well inhibited by these mushrooms, while Escherichia coli (Gramnegative bacteria) was resistant. Grape juice consumption may prevent several chronic diseases owing to the presence of phenolic compounds, which have an important role in the reduction of oxidative stress. This study investigated the polyphenol content and antioxidant activities of grape juices from two cultivars: BRS-Cora and Isabella. Total polyphenol content (TPC), anthocyanins, antioxidant capacity (oxygenradical absorbance capacity, ferric reducing antioxidantpower and1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), and phenolic profile (high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array and fluorescence detection ? Bioactive peptides from marine sources: pharmacological properties and isolation procedures OceanDocs

Marine organisms represent a valuable source of new compounds. The biodiversity of the marine environment and the associated chemical diversity constitute a practically unlimited resource of new active substances in the field of the development of bioactive products. In this paper, the molecular diversity of different marine peptides is described as well as information about their biological properties and mechanisms of action is provided. Moreover, a short review about isolation procedures of selected bioactive marine peptides is offered. Novel peptides from sponges, ascidians, mollusks, sea anemones and seaweeds are presented in association with their pharmacological properties and obtainment methods.

Resumo: Os extratos vegetais de quatro espécies das famílias Asteraceae e Verbenaceae foram avaliados quanto a bioatividade sobre as lagartas Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner, 1818 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) e Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Os extratos hexânicos, diclorometânicos, metanólicos e aquosos de Clerodendrum splendens, Conyza canadensis, Tithonia diversifolia e Vernonanthura westiniana foram oferecidos às lagartas por ingestão em ensaios, avaliando-se a biologia e o comportamento desses insetos. Os extratos vegetais de C. splendens em diclorometano e hexano e de V. westiniana em metanol avaliados sobre A. gemmatalis causaram altas taxas de mortalidade observadas nas lagartas, sendo que o extrato de C. splendens em diclorometano...

Mushrooms have become attractive as functional foods and as a source of physiologically beneficial bioactive compounds. Herein, we describe and compare the chemical constituents (phenolic compounds, macronutrients, sugars, fatty acids, tocopherols and ascorbic acid) of four wild edible mushrooms widely appreciated in gastronomy: Armillaria mellea (Vahl) P. Kumm, Calocybe gambosa (Fr.) Donk, Clitocybe odora (Fr.) P. Kumm., Coprinus comatus (O.F. Müll.) Pers. Hydrolysis of the cell wall components of grape pomace by hydrolytic enzymes may be an alternative for the recovery of conjugated bioactive compounds from a matrix. In this sense, a pool of enzymes was produced by solid-state fermentation (SSF) using wheat bran as a standard medium and a mixture of grape pomace and wheat bran as substrate. The aim of this work was apply the principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate the activity of the enzymes produced and the release of bioactive compounds. The experiment was installed at the Norfruit farm, located in the rural community of Pau Branco, Mossoró/RN, Brazil. A randomized block with two factorial schemes experimental design, was adopted. Ethnobotanical surveys conducted in north-eastern Portugal along several years (2000-2009) reported plant knowledge and use of almost 150 wild species used in folk medicine. This poster documents traditional knowledge and reports the first approach to the antioxidant potential evaluation of six of these species with particular cultural significance, accessed by biochemical assays used as models for the lipid peroxidation damage in biomembranes. Bioactive compounds such as phenolics, flavonoids, vitamin C and vitamin E were also determined.

The bioactive compounds content in pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) juice is variable and depends on agronomic factors, genetic and fruit maturity. In Chile, the areas with this crop have increased more than 65% in the last 5 years. This paper aims to determine the phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity and chromatic parameters of juices from eight Chilean pomegranate genotypes (PG2 to PG9), containing red (PG2 to PG6) or pink arils (PG7 to PG9). Este trabalho avaliou a influência do tempo de maceração sob a composição físicoquímica, fenólica e coloração do vinho tinto fino elaborado com a cultivar Touriga Nacional no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. As uvas da variedade ?Touriga Nacional? foram fornecidas por uma vinícola localizada em Lagoa Grande-PE (9º 2?S, 40º 11? O), e os vinhos foram elaborados experimentalmente no laboratório de enologia da Embrapa Semiárido utilizando diferentes tempos de duração da maceração durante a fermentação alcóolica: 7, 14 e 21 dias. Inhibition of shrimp pathogenic vibrios by extracellular compounds from a proteolytic bacterium Pseudomonas sp. W3 Electron. J. Biotechnol.

Pseudomonas sp. W3, a bacterium known to produce an extracellular alkaline protease, secreted secondary metabolites that inhibited pathogenic bacteria responsible for shrimp luminous vibriosis disease. Antivibrio compounds in the culture supernatant or culture filtrates (0.45 µm and 0.22 µm) of the isolate W3 were tested using an agar well diffusion method on a number of pathogenic vibrios. Vibrio harveyi PSU 2015 a pathogenic isolate was the most sensitive strain. The effectiveness of preparations from the isolate W3 against V. harveyi PSU 2015, and V. cholerae PSSCMI 0062 was in the order of culture supernatant > 0.45 µm culture filtrate > 0.22 µm culture filtrate.
