Cadmium induced mitochondrial redox changes in germinating pea seed Inra

Mitochondria play an essential role in producing the energy required for seedling growth following imbibition. Heavy metals, such as cadmium impair mitochondrial functioning in part by altering redox regulation. The activities of two protein redox systems present in mitochondria, thioredoxin (Trx) and glutaredoxin (Grx), were analysed in the cotyledons and embryo of pea (Pisum sativum L.) germinating seeds exposed to toxic Cd concentration. Compared to controls, Cd-treated germinating seeds showed a decrease in total soluble protein content, but an increase in –SH content. Functional characterization of NRAMP3 and NRAMP4 from the metal hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens Inra

The ability of metal hyperaccumulating plants to tolerate and accumulate heavy metals results from adaptations of metal homeostasis. NRAMP metal transporters were found to be highly expressed in some hyperaccumulating plant species. Here, we identified TcNRAMP3 and TcNRAMP4, the closest homologues to AtNRAMP3 and AtNRAMP4 in Thlaspi caerulescens and characterized them by expression analysis, confocal imaging and heterologous expression in yeast and Arabidopsis thaliana. TcNRAMP3 and TcNRAMP4 are expressed at higher levels than their A. thaliana homologues. Deux échantillons de boue traités par voie anaérobie (déshydratés par centrifugation ou autoclavage) ont été mis en suspension dans de l’eau bipermutée et soumis de manière continue pendant 4 jours à un courant constant de 30 mA dans une cuve à électroséparation. Les fractions anodiques (< 30 μM) ont été enrichies à raison de 5 ou 25 mg/1 de Cd (ajouté sous forme de Cd(NO3)2) et utilisées comme milieu de culture liquide pour des plantules de maïs placées pendant 48 h dans une enceinte climatique. The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis belongs to the strategies plants have developed to cope with adverse environmental conditions including contamination by heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd). In the present work, we report on the protective effect conferred by AM symbiosis to the model legume Medicago truncatula grown in presence of Cd, and on the 2-D-based proteomic approach further used to compare the proteomes of M. truncatula roots either colonised or not with the AM fungus Glomus intraradices in Cd-free and Cd-contaminated substrates. The NRAMP6 metal transporter contributes to cadmium toxicity Inra

NRAMP (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein) homologues are evolutionarily conserved bivalent metal transporters. In Arabidopsis, AtNRAMP3 and AtNRAMP4 play a key role in iron nutrition of the germinating plantlet by remobilizing vacuolar iron stores. In the present paper we describe the molecular and physiological characterization of AtNRAMP6. AtNRAMP6 is predominantly expressed in the dry seed embryo and to a lesser extent in aerial parts. Its promoter activity is found diffusely distributed in cotyledons and hypocotyl, as well as in the vascular tissue region of leaf and flower. The retention of cadmium and zinc in appendicularian houses ArchiMer

The discarded houses of appendicularians can be important components of marine snow and might therefore be instrumental in mediating the vertical flux of metals from surface waters in oceanic ecosystems. Their significance in this regard depends on the retention of metals in these organic debris. To assess this, an experiment was conducted in which the release of cadmium and zinc from discarded houses of the appendicularian Oikopleura longicauda was studied using gamma-emitting radiotracers. The retention curves of the two metals conformed with a single exponential decay loss model. Toxicity of cadmium, lead and lindane to Egeria radiata Lamarck (Lamelibranchia, Donacidae) IRD

La toxicité du cadmium, du plomb, et d'un insecticide, le lindane (Gammalin 20) a été testée sur le bivalve d'eau douce #Egeria radiata$ Lamarck au cours de quatre incubations de 96 heures chacune. Auune mortalité n'a été notée dans les témoins. Dans tous les tests l'effet de la concentration est apparu. Les LC 50 pour 96 heures ont été de 21,4 mgl-1 de Cd, 219 mgl-1 de Pb, 145 mgl-1 de lindane et 200 mgl-1 d'un mélange de Cd et Pb (40 : 160 mgl-1 respectivement). Ces résultats soulignent la toxicité du cadmium, mais montrent également que #E. radiata$ est plus robuste que ne l'indiquaient d'autres tests publiés antérieurement. (Résumé d'auteur)
