Antifungal activity of bacterial strains from the rhizosphere of Stachytarpheta crassifolia. Repositório Alice

This study evaluated the antifungal action of biomolecules produced from the secondary metabolism of bacterial strains found in the rhizosphere of semi arid plants against human pathogenic Candida albicans. Crude extracts were obtained using ethyl acetate as an organic solvent and the bioactivity was assessed with a bioautography technique. The results showed that bacterial strains, Alcaligenes faecalis MRbS12 and Bacillus cereus MRbS26, had compounds with antifungal bioactivity. The largest inhibition zones for both compounds were located on spots with Rf values below 0.500, indicating that the molecules possibly had polar characteristics. These results suggested that microorganisms found in the environment could have bioprospecting potential.

Candida albicans is a common human-pathogenic fungal species with the ability to cause several diseases including surface infections. Despite the clear difficulties of Candida control, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as an alternative strategy for fungal control. In this report, different concentrations of antifungal Cm-p1 (Cencritchis muricatus peptide 1) were electrospun into nanofibers for drug delivery. The nanofibers were characterized by mass spectrometry confirming the presence of the peptide on the scaffold. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electronic microscopy were used to measure the diameters, showing that Cm-p1 affects fiber morphology as well as the diameter and scaffold thickness. Background: The actions of plant antimicrobial peptides (PAP) against intracellular pathogens are poorly known. It has been reported that wheat puroindolines show antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis endocyted by macrophages. In this work, we evaluated the intracellular antimicrobial activity of PAP gamma-thionin and thionin Thi2.1 produced by bovine endothelial cells against intracellular Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Effect of environmental and phenological factors on the antimicrobial activity of Cochlospermum regium (Schrank) Pilg. roots Agronomy

Cochlospermum regium (Bixaceae) is a medicinal plant species native to the Brazilian savannah, known as the Cerrado. Local communities use its roots to treat infections of the female reproductive system. This study evaluated how seasonality, phenological stage, geographical location, plant age, and plant cultivation substrate affect the antimicrobial activity of Cochlospermum regium roots against Candida albicans. Although the plant displayed antimicrobial action in all the assayed conditions, the roots collected during fall and winter inhibited C. albicans the most effectively. EXPERIMENTAL MODEL OF CANDIDA ALBICANS (SEROTYPES A AND B) ADHERENCE IN VITRO BJM

The adherence of Candida albicans is considered an important virulence factor since it determines the colonization of the yeast in various regions of the host, being the initial cause of the infection. In this work we studied the adherence of C. albicans (serotypes A and B) to HeLa and Vero cells after culture for 18 h and 30 h in chemically defined medium (YNB) plus carbohydrate sources such as glucose, sucrose, maltose, galactose and mannose (500 mM). Each assay was performed in triplicate. The best results were obtained with the medium containing glucose. The adherence was greatest in 18 h cultures at 37ºC and at 1 h contact time. The interaction of yeast cells with the host cells was studied by scanning microscopy.

The antifungal effect of six commercial extracts of Chilean propolis on Candida spp Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

Propolis has been used in traditional medicine for many centuries because of its benefcial health properties, including its antimicrobial capacity. Prosthesis stomatitis affects a signifcant percentage of users of removable dentures; Candida albicans is the most common fungal species associated with the development of this pathology. Thus, the objectives of this study were: a. To evaluate the antifungal activity of six commercial propolis extracts against Candida spp. that was isolated from the oral cavity of removable dentures users, and b.
