Evaluation of cardiovascular toxicity of carbon nanotubes functionalized with sodium hyaluronate in oral regenerative medicine BJMBR
Joviano-Santos,J.V.; Sá,M.A.; De Maria,M.L.A.; Almeida,T.C.S.; Geraldo,V.; Oliveira,S.; Ladeira,L.O.; Ferreira,A.J..
It has been demonstrated that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) associated with sodium hyaluronate (HY-CNTs) accelerate bone repair in the tooth sockets of rats. Before clinical application of HY-CNTs, it is important to assess their biocompatibility. Moreover, cardiac toxicity may be caused by the translocation of these particles to the blood stream. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible changes in cardiovascular function in male Wistar rats whose tooth sockets were treated with either CNTs or HY-CNTs (100 μg/mL, 0.1 mL). Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored in conscious rats 7 days after treatment. Cardiac function was evaluated using the Langendorff perfusion technique. The data showed no changes in blood pressure or heart rate in rats treated...

In vitro studies of multiwalled carbon nanotube/ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene nanocomposites with osteoblast-like MG63 cells BJMBR
Reis,J.; Kanagaraj,S.; Fonseca,A.; Mathew,M.T.; Capela-Silva,F.; Potes,J.; Pereira,A.; Oliveira,M.S.A.; Simões,J.A..
Carbon nanotubes are highly versatile materials; new applications using them are continuously being developed. Special attention is being dedicated to the possible use of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in biomaterials contacting with bone. However, carbon nanotubes are also controversial in regards to effects exerted on living organisms. Carbon nanotubes can be used to improve the tribological properties of polymer/composite materials. Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a polymer widely used in orthopedic applications that imply wear and particle generation. We describe here the response of human osteoblast-like MG63 cells after 6 days of culture in contact with artificially generated particles from both UHMWPE polymer and multiwalled carbon...

Nanotubos de carbono modificados com ácido húmico: preparação, caracterização e toxicidade em embriões de zebrafish. Repositório Alice
COA, F.; CLEMENTE, Z.; LOPES, J. R.; RODRIGUES NETO, L. L.; CASTRO, V. L. S. S. de; ALVES, O. L.; BARBIERI, E.; MARTINEZ, D. S. T..

Potencial risks of nanoparticles Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Forbe,Tamara; García,Mario; Gonzalez,Eric.
Nanotoxicology is an emergent important subdiscipline of Nanosciences, which refers to the study of the interactions of nanostructures with biological systems giving emphasis to the elucidation of the relationship between the physical and chemical properties of nanostructures with induction of toxic biological responses. Although potential beneficial effects of nanotechnologies are generally well described, the potential (eco) toxicological effects and impacts of nanoparticles have so far received little attention. This is the reason why some routes of expousure, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, as well as toxicological effects of nanoparticles are discussed in this review.

Resonance Raman spectroscopy in one-dimensional carbon materials Anais da ABC (AABC)
Dresselhaus,Mildred S.; Jorio,Ado; Pimenta,Marcos A..
Brazil has played an important role in the development and use of resonance Raman spectroscopy as a powerful characterization tool for materials science. Here we present a short history of Raman scattering research in Brazil, highlighting the important contributions to the field coming from Brazilian researchers in the past. Next we discuss recent and important contributions where Brazil has become a worldwide leader, that is on the physics of quasi-one dimensional carbon nanotubes. We conclude this article by presenting results from a very recent resonance Raman study of exciting new materials, that are strictly one-dimensional carbon chains formed by the heat treatment of very pure double-wall carbon nanotube samples.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with sodium hyaluronate enhance bone mineralization BJMBR
Sá,M.A.; Ribeiro,H.J.; Valverde,T.M.; Sousa,B.R.; Martins-Júnior,P.A.; Mendes,R.M.; Ladeira,L.O.; Resende,R.R.; Kitten,G.T.; Ferreira,A.J..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium hyaluronate (HY), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and HY-functionalized SWCNTs (HY-SWCNTs) on the behavior of primary osteoblasts, as well as to investigate the deposition of inorganic crystals on titanium surfaces coated with these biocomposites. Primary osteoblasts were obtained from the calvarial bones of male newborn Wistar rats (5 rats for each cell extraction). We assessed cell viability using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide assay and by double-staining with propidium iodide and Hoechst. We also assessed the formation of mineralized bone nodules by von Kossa staining, the mRNA expression of bone repair proteins, and the deposition of inorganic...
