When 2 Mha of Amazonian forests are disturbed by selective logging each year, more than 90 Tg of carbon (C) is emitted to the atmosphere. Emissions are then counterbalanced by forest regrowth. With an original modelling approach, calibrated on a network of 133 permanent forest plots (175 ha total) across Amazonia, we link regional differences in climate, soil and initial biomass with survivors' and recruits' C fluxes to provide Amazon wide predictions of post-logging C recovery.

Carbon stocks in Portuguese maritime pine stands IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Nunes, Luís; Patrício, Maria do Sameiro; Tomé, José; Tomé, Margarida.
One of the Pan-European Criteria for the Sustainable Forest Management is the Maintenance and Appropriate Enhancement of Forest Resources and their Contribution to Global Carbon Cycles. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas. Its annual emissions increased by about 80% between 1970 and 2004 according to the 2007 report from IPCC, being the main responsible for the changes in the world climate. Today, the carbon sequestration is among the most important services that are expected from the forests. Growth and yield models should be able to predict carbon stocks in forests from National Forest Inventory data. Carbon pools in a forest ecosystem are generally partitioned into live trees, understorey vegetation, forest floor...

Changes in soil carbon stocks in Brazil due to land use: paired site comparisons and a regional pasture soil survey. Repositório Alice
ASSAD, E. D.; PINTO, H. S.; MARTINS, S. C.; GROPPO, J. D.; SALGADO, P. R.; EVANGELISTA, B.; VASCONCELLOS, E.; SANO, E. E.; PAVÃO, E.; LUNA, R.; CAMARGO, P. B.; MARTINELLI, L. A..
Abstract. In this paper we calculated soil carbon stocks in Brazil using 17 paired sites where soil stocks were determined in native vegetation, pastures and crop-livestock systems (CPS), and in other regional samplings encompassing more than 100 pasture soils, from 6.58° S to 31.53° S, involving three major Brazilian biomes: Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and the Pampa. The average native vegetation soil carbon stocks at 10, 30 and 60 cm soil depth were equal to approximately 29, 64, and 92 Mg ha-1, respectively. In the paired sites, carbon losses of 7.5 Mg ha-1 and 11.6 Mg ha-1 in CPS systems were observed at 10 cm and 30 cm soil depths, respectively. In pasture soils, carbon losses were similar and equal to 7.5 Mg ha-1 and 11.0 Mg ha-1 at 10 cm and 30 cm...

Changes in Soil Carbon Stocks under Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest System in the Brazilian Amazon Region. Repositório Alice
CONCEIÇÃO, M. C. G. da'; MATOS, E. da S.; BIDONE, E. D.; RODRIGUES, R. de A. R.; CORDEIRO, R. C..
Several studies indicate that the use of integrated production systems, such as integrated crop-livestock-forest systems (ICLF), improves the quality of the soil and consequently the sequestration of organic carbon in the soil. In this way, this work aims to evaluate the carbon stocks in soil under different management systems in the Cerrado/Amazonia transition zone, namely: ICLF, no-tillage, pasture and eucalyptus plantation. For this, two soil samplings were done in 2011 and 2014, in the 0 - 5, 5 - 10 and 10 - 30 cm layers. Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks were analyzed. ICLF system was the treatment that obtained the highest percentage of carbon gain (7.8%) after three years of establishment which represents to an increase of 5.5...

Conversion of amazon rainforest to pasture: Effects on carbon stocks and soil physical properties. Repositório Alice
MATOS, E. da S.; RODRIGUES, R. de A. R.; SOUZA, L.; GREGOLIN, F..
The conversion of native forest to pasture is associated to changes in soil C dynamics. The maintenance, reduction or increase in soil carbon content in pastures compared to the natural ecosystems are dependent on several factors, including climate, soil type, tillage methods and residue and nutrient management.

Organic Matter Fractions and Quality of the Surface Layer of a Constructed and Vegetated Soil After Coal Mining. II - Physical Compartments and Carbon Management Index Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Leal,Otávio dos Anjos; Castilhos,Rosa Maria Vargas; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Pinto,Luiz Fernando Spinelli; Pillon,Clenio Nailto; Penning,Letiane Helwig; Santos,Daiane Carvalho dos.
Soils constructed after mining often have low carbon (C) stocks and low quality of organic matter (OM). Cover crops are decisive for the recovery process of these stocks, improving the quality of constructed soils. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on total organic C (TOC) stocks, C distribution in physical fractions of OM and the C management index (CMI) of a soil constructed after coal mining. The experiment was initiated in 2003 with six treatments: Hemarthria altissima (T1), Paspalum notatum (T2), Cynodon dactylon (T3), Urochloa brizantha (T4), bare constructed soil (T5), and natural soil (T6). Soil samples were collected in 2009 from the 0.00-0.03 m layer, and the TOC and C stocks in the physical particle size...

Quantity and quality of soil organic matter as a sustainability index different land uses in eastern Amazon. Repositório Alice
SIGNOR, D.; DEON, M. D.; CAMARGO, P. B. de; CERRI, C. E. P..
Soil organic matter (SOM), which influences chemical, physical and biological soil attributes, is the main form of C found in the soil which can also be used as a soil sustainability index. The aim of this study was to use the quantity and quality of SOM as an indicator to determine the sustainability of different land uses (native vegetation, secondary vegetation, fruit orchards, horticultural areas, degraded pasture, improved pasture, and fields with annual crops) in the eastern Amazon. Improved pasture had higher soil C stock than the other land uses and was similar to the native vegetation, and also presented the highest quantity of C in a stable form in the soil (fraction < 53 ìm). According to the C management index, improved pasture is the most...

Soil aggregation according to the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in soil under different cropping systems PAB
Seben Junior,Getulio de Freitas; Corá,José Eduardo; Lal,Rattan.
Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate total soil carbon and nitrogen, as well as their contents in particulate and mineral-associated C fractions; to determine C stock and sequestration rates in the soil; and to verify the effect of C and N contents on soil aggregation, using different crop rotations and crop sequences under no-tillage. The study was carried out for nine years in a clayey Oxisol. The treatments consisted of different cropping systems formed by the combination of three summer crops (cropped until March) - corn (Zea mays) monocropping, soybean (Glycine max) monocropping, and soybean/corn rotation - and seven second crops (crop successions). Soil samples were taken at the 0.00-0.10-m layer for physical fractionation of C and N,...

Contemporary conservation interventions must balance potential trade-offs between multiple ecosystem services. In tropical forests, much attention has focused on the extent to which carbon-based conservation provided by REDD+ policies can also mitigate biodiversity conservation. In the nearly one-third of tropical forests that are community owned or managed, conservation strategies must also balance the multiple uses of forest products that support local livelihoods. Although much discussion has focused on policy options, little empirical evidence exists to evaluate the potential for trade-offs among different tropical forest value components. We assessed multiple components of forest value, including tree diversity, carbon stocks, and both timber and...

Tree height and tropical forest biomass estimation. Repositório Alice
HUNTER, M. O.; KELLER, M.; VICTORIA, D. de C.; MORTON, D. C..
Tropical forests account for approximately half of above-ground carbon stored in global vegetation. However, uncertainties in tropical forest carbon stocks remain high because it is costly and laborious to quantify standing carbon stocks. Carbon stocks of tropi-5 cal forests are determined using allometric relations between tree stem diameter and height and biomass. Previous work has shown that the inclusion of height in biomass allometries, compared to the sole use of diameter, significantly improves biomass estimation accuracy. Here, we evaluate the effect of height measurement error on biomass estimation and we evaluate the accuracy of recently published diameter : height allome10 tries at four sites within the Brazilian Amazon. As no destructive sample...
