A preliminary revision of knowledge status of felids in Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Lucherini,Mauro; Soler,Lucía; Luengos Vidal,Estela.
Argentina is the host of 10 wild felids (28% of the world total). Although the Cat Specialist Group Action Plan has classified the conservation status of Argentine cats as relatively good, the ranking was based on a largely incomplete database for at least 80% of the species. Here we review the current status of knowledge and research effort of Argentine cats, compare it with their distribution, habitat association and conservation status and provide guidelines for their future research. Between 1990 and 2000, cat research has received increasing attention in Argentina. Twenty-four projects have been carried out, but only 13 studies are still in progress. A rank of research priority has been calculated for each felid and ecoregion. Our analysis showed that...

Abundance and activity patterns of the margay (Leopardus wiedii) at a mid-elevation site in the Eastern Andes of Ecuador Mastozool. neotrop.
Vanderhoff,E. Natasha; Hodge,Anne-Marie; Arbogast,Brian S.; Nilsson,Jonas; Knowles,Travis W..
We investigated abundance and activity patterns of the margay (Leopardus wiedii) via remote camera-trapping at Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary, a new preserve located near Sumaco National Park, in the eastern Andean foothills of Ecuador. We recorded 85 capture events and ten individuals, including one juvenile, over a total of 3220 camera-trap nights. Activity was mostly nocturnal and we found no difference in abundance between primary and secondary forest. Our capture rate (2.64 captures/100 camera-trap nights) indicates a high abundance of margays in the region. The site lies within a matrix of agricultural lands and the high abundance and seasonal occurrence data seem to suggest that while one or two females may occupy the area permanently, most margays...

Anatomical description of the salivary glands: parotid, mandibular and sublingual of the crab-eating-fox (Cerdocyon thous) Biological Sciences
Pereira, Thiago Scremin Boscolo; Faria Júnior, Wilson Henrique.
Descriptive anatomical studies of wild animals are fundamental, since they provide subsidies for the elaboration of more adequate techniques of sustained management, contributing to the preservation of species threatened with extinction. Thus, the aim of the study is to anatomically describe the salivary glands: parotid, mandibular and sublingual of the crab-eating-fox (Cerdocyon thous). For this purpose, three carcasses of crab-eating-fox donated by Ibama were used. The animals were fixed with 10% aqueous formaldehyde solution, dissected, analyzed descriptively and photographed. It was found that the parotid gland of the crab-eating-fox is located caudally to the branch of the mandible, in the rostroventral margin of the auricular cartilage.  The...

Body mass variation in the Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi) RChHN
LUCHERINI,MAURO; MANFREDI,CLAUDIA; LUENGOS,ESTELA; DIAS MAZIM,FÁBIO; SOLER,LUCÍA; CASANAVE,EMMA B..
We report new data on the intersexual and geographical variation in body mass of the Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi d'Orbigny and Gervais 1844), a little known small cat from South America, and combine them with the existing information to compare alternative hypotheses for variation in body mass. Most data on the body mass of O. geoffroyi have been obtained from previous research on this felid in four study areas of southern Brazil and central and southern Argentina. These data were added to those reported for other three additional locations. Our results set the body mass of O. geoffroyi to 4.26 ± 1.03 kg (mean ± SD, n = 56). We also show that males generally are heavier than females throughout most of this species' distributional range. Body mass...

Carnivores from the Mexican state of Puebla: distribution, taxonomy, and conservation Mastozool. neotrop.
Ramírez-Pulido,José; González-Ruiz,Noé; Genoways,Hugh H..
We examined 96 museum specimens belonging to 14 species of Carnivora from the Mexican State of Puebla. In addition, four species were documented based on literature records and by indirect evidence. The carnivorous mammals of Puebla belong to 5 families, 18 genera, 18 species and 23 subspecies. Eight of these 23 taxa are reported herein for the first time from the state of Puebla. Of the 18 species, Herpailurus yagouaroundi, Lontra longicaudis, Taxidea taxus, and Galictis vittata are considered by Norma Oficial Mexicana as threatened species, Leopardus wiedii and Eira barbara in danger of extinction, and Potos flavus is under special protection. We found Lynx rufus, Canis latrans, Taxidea taxus, and Bassariscus astutus were found only in the Nearctic...

Characteristics of defecation sites of the Geoffroy´s cat Leopardus geoffroyi Mastozool. neotrop.
Soler,Lucía; Lucherini,Mauro; Manfredi,Claudia; Ciuccio,Mariano; Casanave,Emma B..
Little is known about the use of feces in scent marking by small wildcats. We analyzed the characteristics of 357 Geoffroy's cat, Leopardus geoffroyi, defecation sites in five protected areas of Argentina. Defecation sites were mainly found in trees (47.6%) or on the ground (38.1%), and the frequency of occurrence of the types of sites differed between areas. Almost half (47.3%) of defecation sites were latrines, with 6.1 ± 3.6 (mean ± SD) feces each. Geoffroy's cats were flexible in the choice of defecation sites, but mainly deposited feces in latrines located in conspicuous sites. These results suggest that Geoffroy's cats use feces in olfactory/visual communication.

Coronary Irrigation in Puma concolor (Carnivora: Felidae) International Journal of Morphology
Viotto-Souza,Wilson; Souza Junior,Paulo de; Carvalho,Amarílis Díaz de; Abidu-Figueiredo,Marcelo; Santos,André Luiz Quagliatto.
This study described the anatomy of the coronary arteries and their main branches in Puma concolor. The hearts of six individuals of Puma concolor, were analyzed. The A. coronaria sinistra formed the ramus interventricularis paraconalis and the ramus circunflexus. A ramus septal was formed close to the origin of the ramus interventricularis paraconalis and yielded from six to eight ventricular branches. The circumflex branch originated from two to five atrial branches and from three to seven ventricular branches. The right coronary artery formed two to six atrial branches, and four to nine ventricular branches. In half of the individuals, an accessory coronary artery was identified as the first branch of the right coronary artery. In all individuals, the...

Determining micro- and mesofaunal composition through the analysis of South American grey fox's feces in two different semiarid habitats Ecología austral
Núñez,María B; Mangione,Antonio.
Information obtained from carnivorous´ scats when used for determining faunal composition in different habitats could be confusing if the carnivore does not depose its feces in the same habitat it is feeding or if the prey's home range is larger than the fox´s foraging habitat. In this study, the use of the presence and frequency of mammalian hair in the feces of the South American grey fox, Pseudalopex griseus, are proposed as indicators of the micro- and mesofaunal composition in two habitats (Creosote bush flats and Sierra) in a semidesert environment in central Argentina. These results are then compared to faunal composition determined by live trapping and tracks. The microfauna present was confirmed by using Sherman live traps, while the mesofauna was...

External Effects of Mitigating Measures to Reduce Large Carnivore Predation on Sheep AgEcon
Asheim, Leif Jarle; Mysterud, Ivar.
Outfield range pastures with widely dispersed sheep are quite common in Norway, with a summer population of approximately 2.4 million animals. In many areas losses to predators are considerable and identifying efficient mitigating measures against predation is a prime target in nature management. In order to assess economic efficiency, any actual effect of the measure on predation and loss regime must be addressed. One problem with some research is the "scale problem". While sheep outfield home range areas have been measured from 2.2 - 33.8 km2, large carnivores on their ranges might use from several hundred up to even thousands of square kilometres. For lynx (Lynx lynx) the home range varies between 158 and 433 km2, wolverine (Gulo gulo) between 61 and...

Feeding ecology of the culpeo in southern Ecuador: wild ungulates being the main prey Naturalis
Guntiñas, M.; Lozano, J.; Cisneros, R.; Narváez, C.; Armijos, J..
This study details for the first time the food habits of the culpeo or Andean fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) in high areas of the Ecuadorian Andes during a complete annual cycle. Our objective was to identify prey species, calculate their contribution to diet and test for temporal variation. In total, 304 Andean fox scats were collected within the Podocarpus National Park (Loja province, southern Ecuador). By analysing the content of scats 413 prey items were identified and classified into eight prey groups. Subsequently, the frequency of occurrence (FO) for each prey group was calculated per month together with the relative contribution of estimated consumed biomass (CB). In addition, the Shannon-Wiener’s index was calculated as a measurement of monthly diet...
