Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries, using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis ArchiMer
Fuchs, Jacques; Martin, Jean-louis M.; Populus, Jacques.
After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance. The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the...

Características ecológicas del pulpito Octopus Tehuelchus en tres ambientes del golfo San Matías OceanDocs
Storero, L.P..
Coastal marine ecosystems are highly variable and the inherent biotic and abiotic factors of these environments can influence the bio-ecological characteristics of the living cephalopods. The presence of the small octopus “pulpito” Octopus tehuelchus in the coastal environments of San Matías Gulf has been exploited by artisanal fishermen for more than 60 years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the variations in the life cycle of the pulpito, and the factors that could account for these variations in three different coastal environments of San Matías Gulf, with differences in the physical, ecological and fisheries characteristics. This study was developed in San Antonio bay, El Fuerte and Islote Lobos. Monthly samplings (October 2005-2007) in the...

Coastal zones inventory by high resolution satellites ArchiMer
Loubersac, Lionel.
The development of tools for assessing impacts on coastal environments is a reality. These impact assessments need both baseline and monitoring studies. Satellite remote sensing data would be useful for coastal inventories (baselines) and monitoring if high spatial and temporal resolutions are yield compatible. An overview of the various sensors that could be used is presented. The constraints linked to the different resolutions are exposed. An example based on Spot simulated data and trends are developed.

Diversity of Vibrio spp. isolated at ambient environmental temperature in the Eastern English Channel as determined by pyrH sequencing ArchiMer
Tall, Amadou; Hervio-heath, Dominique; Teillon, Anna; Boisset-helbert, C.; Delesmont, R.; Bodilis, J.; Touron-bodilis, A..
Aims To describe the diversity of the culturable mesophilic and potentially pathogenic vibrios isolated at 22 and 37 degrees C on TCBS medium, in September 2009 from seawater and surface sediments. Methods and Results q-PCR assays previously selected for the identification of bacterial strains isolated at 37 degrees C were used in combination with the partial sequencing of two housekeeping genes, pyrH and toxR, to identify 315 strains isolated at 22 degrees C. The great majority of the 37 degrees C strains was identified by q-PCR assays, (five of the six species) with the predominance of Vibrio alginolyticus (85 center dot 9%) and V.harveyi (10 center dot 7%). The human pathogens V.parahaemolyticus and V.cholerae were rarely detected (two strains each)....

Land Based Activities and Sources of Pollution to the Marine, Coastal and Associated Fresh Water Ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean Region OceanDocs
Francis, J.; Mmochi, A.J..
The lack of infrastructure and treatment facilities for the large quantities of domestic sewage generated by expanding coastal urban populations, and an increasing number of visiting tourists, represents the greatest threat to public health, coastal habitats and economic development in each state of the region. Other priorities requiring action include the effects of siltation related to agricultural activity and the dumping of solid domestic waste in the coastal areas leading to the degradation of coastal habitats, with implications for fish stocks and catches. Furthermore, laws and policies regardinng waste disposal and quality of effluents need to be enacted and reinforced Although eutrophication and algal blooms associated with agricultural, industrial...

Remote Sensing and Emergency Management for Coastal Environmental Disasters OceanDocs
Huh, O.K..
It is estimated that approximately 50% of the worlds population live on the coastal fringes of landmasses and the likely trend is for this number to increase to 75% within a decade. For centuries people have been drawn to coastal regions for the rich soils for agriculture (of deltas and lowlands), the extensive fisheries resources, transportation opportunities and recreation, and just for the natural beauty of living on beachfronts. However, the air-sea-land boundary referred to as the coastal zone is dangerous, comprised of an extremely dynamic, complex physical / biological set of environments. Worldwide, the coastal zone is characterized by high population densities, extremely varied and important biological diversity, including coastal fisheries, rich...

Research activities in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) within the 1997-2001 PNEC project ArchiMer
Raimbault, Patrick; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier.
The French national program on the coastal environment Programme National Environnement Cotier (PNEC) represented during the last decade a major support for the pluridisciplinary oceanographic research in the Gulf of Lion. During the second phase of the program, that lasted from 1997 to 2001, the main objective for this worksite was to establish an annual budget of carbon and associated biogenic elements to characterise the role of this region as source and the sink of elements. This introductory paper provides an over-view of the research framework and recapitulates the major scientific outcomes.
