Coastal Ocean and Nearshore Observation: A French Case Study ArchiMer
Cocquempot, Lucie; Delacourt, Christophe; Paillet, Jerome; Riou, Philippe; Aucan, Jérôme; Castelle, Bruno; Charria, Guillaume; Claudet, Joachim; Conan, Pascal; Coppola, Laurent; Hocdé, Régis; Planes, Serge; Raimbault, Patrick; Savoye, Nicolas; Testut, Laurent; Vuillemin, Renaud.
To understand and predict the physical, chemical, and biological processes at play in coastal and nearshore marine areas requires an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. The case study of the French structuration of coastal ocean and nearshore observing systems provides an original overview on a federative research infrastructure named ILICO. It is a notable example of national structuration and pan-institution efforts to investigate the forefront of knowledge on the processes at work within the critical coastal zone. ILICO comprises, in a pluridisciplinary approach, eight distributed network-systems of observation and data analysis that are accredited and financially supported by French research institutions and the French Ministry for Higher...

Determining ridge and runnel longshore migration rate using Spot imagery ArchiMer
Lafon, V; Dupuis, H; Howa, H; Froidefond, Jm.
High-resolution colour satellite imagery is used to map the morphology and to determine the longshore movements of intertidal ridge and runnel systems that characterise the Atlantic southwest coast of France. A couple of Spot images recorded during the summer of 1989 are processed to extract accurate geographical maps of the coastline defined. in this study, as the level corresponding to the lowest astronomical tide. The coastline extraction method is based on a reflectance model, providing depth measurements that were calibrated in the field. This method enables us to map the coastline regardless of the tide level above the lowest astronomical tide at the moment of the image capture. As this model can be extrapolated to a large area, hen sea water is...

Flux et usages de l'eau de mer dans les marais salés endigués Charentais : Cas du marais salé endigué de l'île de Ré ArchiMer
Paticat, Francois.
The aim of the study is to determine how seawater is used in Ré island marine ponds (Charente-Maritime, France). Thus, we assessed the ecosystem functioning, estimated its historical evolution and determined the most suitable ways to improve current management processes. The knowledge of seawater management is essential to ensure wetland future and meet the numerous interests of wetland stakeholders, especially in term of seawater sharing. Consequently, it is necessary to consider the Ré island marine embanked wetland through its natural as well as human characteristics. Our work followed two research axes. First, a survey and a description of wetland activities were realized through their management types and their water use features, knowing that human...

Nutrients levels of marine water along the North of France coastline are growing-up. They have a good chance to become a problem in the future. Since 1992, a network of three radial lines is sampled at regular interval to supervise on long term : 1. Parameters levels that show the environment quality (temperature, salinity, turbidity, total suspended matters, organic suspended matters, chlorophyll, phaeopigments, phytoplankton). 2. Nutrients concentrations ( ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, silicate) that enrich the environment , and may be responsable of its deterioration. The report shows the results of the first three years survey. I t strikes a correlation between the tested parameters and takes stock of the present situation.
