Défis de la surveillance des maladies chez les coquillages marins en France ArchiMer
Lupo, Coralie; Francois, Cyrille; Arzul, Isabelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Renault, Tristan.
The basic concepts and objectives of animal disease surveillance are common to all types of animal production. Yet, the procedures for implementation have been mostly developed for terrestrial animal productions. Disease surveillance in marine shellfish calls for specific measures in view of the peculiarities of marine biology and rearing techniques. The main objective of disease surveillance in marine shellfish is to detect as early as possible exotic and newly emerging diseases. With this objective in mind, a national surveillance network for surveillance of mollusc diseases called Repamo has been developed. It combines passive reporting and risk-based surveillance.

Devenir des virus entériques humains en milieu marin : Apport des VLPs (Virus Like Particles) pour la purification des coquillages ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne.
This work was developed following two research axes: the improvement of norovirus (human and animal strain) and rotavirus detection, and the evaluation of VLPs as a viral substitute for studying their comportment in marine environment. The main point concerning the method optimisation was the development of real-time RT-PCR for norovirus detection. The second part of the work has demonstrated the potential of norovirus and rotavirus VLPs as a viral surrogate as proven by the study of their stability in seawater. As VLPs are non-pathogen particles, the long persistence of rotavirus VLPs in shellfish has been shown in natural conditions (oysters on marine estuaries). The studies of Norwalk virus VLPs attachment to oyster tissues have demonstrated a specific...

Importations de coquillages en Ille-et-Vilaine (1986 à 1989) ArchiMer
Gerla, Daniel.

Investigating an avian source of shellfish faecal contamination in the Thau lagoon (the Mediterranean, France) ArchiMer
Derolez, Valerie; Serais, Ophelie; Caprais, Marie-paule; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Messiaen, Gregory.
Microbes regularly contaminate Thau lagoon shellfish. Between 1997 and 2007, 18% of the analyses carried out in dry weather recorded more than 230 Escherichia coli / 100 g of bivalves (Ifremer French microbial monitoring network), leading the administration to restrict the shellfish harvest area, including suspension of production. This study aims to determine, the contribution of seabirds, which roost at night on the Thau lagoon shellfish growing frames, to shellfish faecal pollution in dry weather.Data were collected in 2008 from both the drainage area (pollution input) and the lagoon (water quality and microbial monitoring, seabird counts) in dry weather. The data showed that, with no watershed input or lagoon resurgence, microbial contaminants were...

Virus entériques humains et coquillages ArchiMer
Parnaudeau, Sylvain; Le Mennec, Cecile; Miura, Takayuki; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Human enteric viruses discharged in raw sewage are hightly resistant and may be detected in surface waters, coastal areas and shellfish. Whereas noroviruses, responsible for relatively benign acute gastroentritis, are the most common agents implicated in shellfish borne outbreaks, other human viruses which cause severe human diseases, such as hepatitis A virus, may also be transmitted. Environmental studies have demonstrated that virus concentrations detected in shellfish are higher than in surrounding waters. This concentration may explain the high prevalence of noroviruses detected in various shellfish species collected in different countries. If many questions remain regarding viral contamination of shellfish, the most important seems to be the...
