Effect of in vivo pesticide exposure and injection of bacteria on immune gene expression in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Bay of Marennes-Oleron is an important French area of reproduction for sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. This area is often subjected to many pollutions due to anthropic activities, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which cause adverse effects in aquatic organisms. The harmful effects of such contaminants on fish immune system leading to a decreased resistance against pathogens begin to be described, but remain poorly known. In this context, influence of micropolluants, like PAH, on the defense mechanisms developed by sea bass was tested. Variability of oyster quality at marketable size in winter was assesed by using a proportional sampling strategy based upon the yearly production of the oyster packing house. Landings per unit of production were estimated using the number of commercialized sanitary certification labels or/and the annual landings declared to the Veterinary Services. The range of variability for 15 parameters was estimated using the national monitoring network (REMORA) data outputs and a regional questionnaire. Both data sources showed similar results. Condition indices and morphological factors led to the highest variability. However, these conclusions should be confirmed by additional studies considering seasonal trends to assess the described quantitative relationships.

Vibrio crassostreae sp nov., isolated from the haemolymph of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer

Polyphasic analysis of five new Vibrio isolates originating from the haernolymph of diseased cultured oysters is described. The new isolates were closely related to Vibrio splendidus, having 98 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. gyrB phylogenetic analysis, fluorescent amplified-fragment length polymorphism (FAFLP) fingerprinting and DNA-DNA hybridization experiments clearly showed that the new isolates form a tight genomic group that is different from the currently known Vibrio species. It is proposed to accommodate these isolates in a novel species, Vibrio crassostreae sp. nov. (type strain LGP 7(T) =LMG 22240(T)=Clp 108327(T)).
