A new study method of microhabitat structure of small mammals BJB
CERQUEIRA,R.; FREITAS,S. R..
The variables in habitat studies are usually transformed in such a way that they become abstractions and intuition is lost. We tested a new method for the analysis of habitat using data collected in a grid laid at the "restinga de Maricá", in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven microhabitat variables were measured at each trap station. We assume that these variables characterize the microhabitat structure at the moment when measurements were taken. The data are transformed in 3 ways: (1) the averages of the measured variables were calculated, as usual in habitat studies; (2) the data are transformed in densities per area in square meters without reduction in the number of variables; and (3) we calculated the natural logarithms of the data thus...

An electronic tongue for juice level evaluation in non-alcoholic beverages IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Peres, António M.; Dias, L.G.; Barcelos, T.P.; Morais, Jorge Sá; Machado, A.A.S.C..
An electronic tongue with 36 cross-sensibility polymeric membranes was built and used for semi-quantitative analysis of beverages. The objective was to differentiate 4 non-alcoholic beverage groups with different added fruit juice contents: higher than 30%, between 14%-30%, 5%-10% and 0.1%-2%. A set of 16 Portuguese beverages (4 for each group), purchased in commercial supermarkets, was analyzed and the respective signal profiles recorded by the electronic tongue device. The data obtained were treated by stepwise linear discriminant analysis, allowing a 100% overall correct classification for the original grouped cases and a 93.8% for the “leaving one-out” cross-validation procedure

Antioxidant activity of portuguese honey samples: different contribution of the entire honey and phenolic extract IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R.; Aires, Edmur; Barreira, João C.M.; Estevinho, Leticia M..
The antioxidant activity of Portuguese honeys was evaluated considering the different contribution of entire samples and phenolic extracts. Several chemical and biochemical assays were used to screen the antioxidant properties of entire honeys with different colour intensity and phenolic extracts: reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging capacity, and inhibition of lipid peroxidation using the b-carotene linoleate model system and the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay. The amounts of phenols, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, b-carotene, lycopene and sugars present in the samples were also determined. The highest antioxidant contents and the lowest EC50 values for antioxidant activity were obtained in the dark...

Assessing population-level morphometric variation of the Mountain Mullet Agonostomus monticola (Teleostei: Mugilidae) across its Middle American distribution Neotropical Ichthyology
Díaz-Murillo,Bertha P.; Ruiz-Campos,Gorgonio; Piller,Kyle R.; McMahan,Caleb D.; García-De-León,Francisco J.; Camarena-Rosales,Faustino.
ABSTRACT Population-level morphometric variation of the Mountain Mullet (Agonostomus monticola) was assessed in 419 adult specimens from 25 sample sites (river basins) across its Middle American distribution (Pacific and Atlantic-Caribbean drainages). This analysis was based on 36 standardized linear measurements and 19 landmarks on geometric morphometrics approach. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) revealed 19 linear morphological characters with significant variation among groups. Geometrically, the most notable changes were associated to the curvature of the frontal region of the head, the anterior and posterior insertion of the first dorsal and anal fins. The resulting grouping based on the DFA and geometric morphometrics techniques (Pacific-A,...

Association between microsatellites and resistance to Mal de Río Cuarto in maize by discriminant analysis Phyton
Bonamico,NC; Balzarini,MG; Arroyo,AT; Ibañez,MA; Díaz,DG; Salerno,JC; Di Renzo,MA.
Resistance to Mal de Río Cuarto (MRC) disease in maize (Zea mays L.) is important in Argentina because the crop area involves a wide region where the disease is endemic. Molecular marker-assisted selection could be used as an additional selection tool to enhance precision of the genotype selection for resistance. It demands the identification of informative markers. Microsatellite (SSR) markers linked to gene(s) associated with resistance to MRC have been reported from previous QTL analyses. These analyses have been made on linkage maps derived from a relatively early mapping population. In advanced populations, where highly distinct genotypes are easily classified, discriminant analysis (DA) represents a complementary strategy to marker identification;...

Decision Modelling for the Integration of Woody Plants in Smallholder Farms in the Central Highlands of Ethiopia JARTS
Krause, Michael; Uibrig, Holm; Kidane, Berhane.
Farmers’ perceptions of the utility and the constraints of locally available woody species are assumed to influence the decision-making and the behaviour of tree and shrub integration into current land-use types. Accordingly, the objectives of this study are (1) to analyse farmers’ decisions in making use of woody plants under perceived constraints and (2) to analyse influencing factors that determine the deliberate tree and shrub growing behaviour. The methodology bases on the approaches of the ’Farming Systems’ and the ’Behavioural Decision-Making’. Influence diagrams are constructed incorporating the perceived utility and decision determinants of deliberately grown woody plants. Modelling of the tree adoption behaviour of farmers employs the...

DETERMINANTES DA ERRADICAÇÃO DA FEBRE AFTOSA NO BRASIL AgEcon
Muller, Carlos Andre da Silva; Mattos, Leonardo Bornacki de; Lima, Joao Eustaquio de.
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been a problem for the Brazilian livestock since the XIX century. Once it affects the livestock productivity and has always been a problem for the country exports due to the imposition of sanitary barriers. In 1992, when no state was free from FMD, the National Program for Eradication of FMD (PNEFA) was implemented. Since then good results has been obtained with control and eradication of the disease in some states. However, in other states the problem still persists. It is important to determine why some states have faced difficulties in reaching the status of free from FMD while others not. This work aimed to identify the factors which discriminate the populations of states free from FMD from those not free. The results...

Discrimination of varietal olive oils of the portuguese cultivars Cobrançosa, Madural and Verdeal based on their fatty acids composition. IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Pereira, J.A.; Oliveira, M.B.P.P.; Casal, S.; Alves, M.R..
The fatty acid composition has been traditionally used to discriminate the different vegetable oils and confirm their authenticity. The aim of the present study was to check the possible use of the fatty acid profile to differentiate varietal olive oils of the three most important cultivars in Northeast Portugal (Cobrançosa, Madural and Verdeal). Fifteen varietal olive oils from each of the three cultivars were collected to achieve that goal. Fatty acids were determined, as methylesters, by HRGC. Methylesters were prepared by transesterefication with BF3/methanol after saponification with methanolic KOH. The fatty acid pattern was performed with a Chrompack CP9001 equipped with a split-splitless injector, a FID and a 50m x 0,25 mm i.d. fused silica...

Gene trio signatures as molecular markers to predict response to doxorubicin cyclophosphamide neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancerpatients BJMBR
Katayama,M.L.H.; Brentani,H.; Abreu,A.P.S.; Barbosa,E.M.; Oliveira,C.T.; Góes,J.C.S.; Brentani,M.M.; Folgueira,M.A.A.K..
In breast cancer patients submitted to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (4 cycles of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide, AC), expression of groups of three genes (gene trio signatures) could distinguish responsive from non-responsive tumors, as demonstrated by cDNA microarray profiling in a previous study by our group. In the current study, we determined if the expression of the same genes would retain the predictive strength, when analyzed by a more accessible technique (real-time RT-PCR). We evaluated 28 samples already analyzed by cDNA microarray, as a technical validation procedure, and 14 tumors, as an independent biological validation set. All patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (4 AC). Among five trio combinations previously identified, defined by nine...

Genetic characterization of an elite coffee germplasm assessed by gSSR and EST-SSR markers. Repositório Alice
MISSIO, R. F.; CAIXETA, E. T.; ZAMBOLIM, E. M.; PENA, G. F.; ZAMBOLIM, L.; DIAS, L. A. S.; SAKIYAMA, N. S..
Coffee is one of the main agrifood commodities traded worldwide. In 2009, coffee accounted for 6.1% of the value of Brazilian agricultural production, generating a revenue of US$6 billion. Despite the importance of coffee production in Brazil, it is supported by a narrow genetic base, with few accessions. Molecular differentiation and diversity of a coffee breeding program were assessed with gSSR and EST-SSR markers. The study comprised 24 coffee accessions according to their genetic origin: arabica accessions (six traditional genotypes of C. arabica), resistant arabica (six leaf rust-resistant C. arabica genotypes with introgression of Híbrido de Timor), robusta (five C. canephora genotypes), Híbrido de Timor (three C. arabica x C. canephora), triploids...

Identification of roselle varieties through simple discriminating physicochemical characteristics using multivariate analysis Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
KANE,Alé; ACHIR,Nawel; CISSE,Mady; PALLET,Dominique; SAKHO,Mama; DORNIER,Manuel.
Abstract The objective of this work is to study the feasibility of a more objective and rigorous classification of the calices of Hibiscus sabdariffa based on their physicochemical profile. To do so, 19 analyses were carried out on 4 varieties of calices cultivated in Senegal: Vimto, Koor, Thaï and CLT92. Principal component analysis results showed that 15 physicochemical and biochemical parameters could be potentially used to discriminate the varieties of calices. Polyphenolic and anthocyanin contents were anti-correlated to protein content and could be used to differentiate the Vimto/CLT92 and the Koor/Thaï varieties. Within these two clusters, pH and lipid content could discriminate each variety. Finally, factorial discriminant analysis showed that...

In search of synergistic effects in antioxidant capacity of combined edible mushrooms IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Queirós, Bruno; Barreira, João C.M.; Sarmento, Ana C.; Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R..
The antioxidant activity of different edible mushrooms was evaluated considering the different contribution of individual and combined extracts. The radical scavenging capacity was evaluated through hydrogen atom transfer and single electron transfer reaction-based assays: DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power, respectively. The inhibition of lipid peroxidation was studied in lipossomes solutions by the beta-carotene-linoleate system. Three types of interactions (synergistic, additive and negative synergistic effects) were observed, synergism being the most abundant effect. Marasmius oreades is present in the mixtures with higher antioxidant properties and synergistic effects, while Cantharellus cibarius is present in the mixtures with lowest...

Morphology of the shell of Happiella cf. insularis (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia: Systrophiidae) from three forest areas on Ilha Grande, Southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Barbosa,Amilcar Brum; Santos,Sonia Barbosa dos.
We conducted a study on shell morphology variation among three populations of Happiella cf. insularis (Boëttger, 1889) inhabiting different areas (Jararaca, Caxadaço, and Parnaioca trails) at Vila Dois Rios, Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Linear and angular measurements, shell indices representing shell shape, and whorl counts were obtained from images drawn using a stereomicroscope coupled with a camera lucida. The statistical analysis based on ANOVA (followed by Bonferroni's test), Pearson's correlation matrix, and discriminant analysis enabled discrimination among the populations studied. The variable that most contributed to discriminate among groups was shell height. Mean shell height was greatest for specimens collected...

Morphometric identification of small mammal footprints from ink tracking tunnels in the Brazilian Cerrado Zoologia
Palma,Alexandre R. T.; Gurgel-Gonçalves,Rodrigo.
An alternative method for identifying and inventorying rodents and marsupials inhabiting forests and grasslands of Brazilian Cerrado is presented and discussed. Ink tracking tunnels were designed according to the size of target species and used to build a reference collection of small mammal footprints composed of 1408 footprints belonging to 251 individuals from 30 species (21 rodents and nine marsupials). Sherman traps and ink tracking tunnels were used to conduct inventories in gallery forests. Footprints obtained in ink tracking tunnels were digitalized and compared with those in reference collection using Discriminant Analysis (DFA). DFA allowed good footprint differentiation, even among congeneric species. In DFA analysis, the first two axis were...

Mulch materials in processing tomato: a multivariate approach Scientia Agricola
Moreno,Marta María; Moreno,Carmen; Tarquis,Ana María.
Mulch materials of different origins have been introduced into the agricultural sector in recent years alternatively to the standard polyethylene due to its environmental impact. This study aimed to evaluate the multivariate response of mulch materials over three consecutive years in a processing tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) crop in Central Spain. Two biodegradable plastic mulches (BD1, BD2), one oxo-biodegradable material (OB), two types of paper (PP1, PP2), and one barley straw cover (BS) were compared using two control treatments (standard black polyethylene [PE] and manual weed control [MW]). A total of 17 variables relating to yield, fruit quality, and weed control were investigated. Several multivariate statistical techniques were applied,...

Multivariate analysis of stable isotope data in the traceability process for birds - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v34i4.13434 Animal Sciences
Sartori, Maria Márcia Pereira; Denadai, Juliana Célia; Garcia, Amélia Maria Lima; Carrijo, Alfredo Sampaio; Ducatti, Carlos.
Isotope analysis has proved to be an extremely important tool in the traceability process; however, statistical analyses of the results show discrepancies, as the data depend on and originate from several chemical elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur (CHONS). In order to establish the proper analysis of traceability data for birds using the stable isotope technique and evaluate the need for a combined analysis of the variables, data for carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 were used from eggs (albumen + yolk) of laying hens and the pectoral muscle of broilers, which were subjected to univariate statistical analysis (ANOVA and complemented with Tukey’s test) and multivariate statistical analysis (MANOVA and Discriminant Analysis). The data...
