ECONOMIC REFORM AND THE CHANGING PATTERN OF CHINA'S AGRICULTURAL TRADE AgEcon
Carter, Colin A.; Li, Xianghong.
This paper examines the composition of China's trade from 1980 to 1996, with a focus on agriculture and a view towards understanding its changing structure relative to other sectors. We analyze the time series behavior of individual goods at the SITC three-digit level, categorized into three groups: agricultural commodities, "other primary" commodities, and manufactures. We find that agricultural trade has expanded along comparative advantage lines in a very modest way, compared to manufactures and other primary commodities.

Energy efficiency, innovation, and job creation in California AgEcon
Roland-Holst, David W..
Global climate change poses significant risks to the California economy. Recognizing and responding to these threats, Governor Schwarzenegger signed Executive Order #S-3-05 (Schwarzenegger 2005) which called for a 30 percent reduction below business-as-usual of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. In September 2006, the California legislature passed and Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law the historic Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32), which mandates a first-in-the-nation limit on emissions that cause global warming. In June 2006, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) released a “Draft Scoping Plan” – the policy roadmap to meet the emissions reduction target of 169 Million Metric Tons of Carbon (MMTCO2)...

Halving Hunger: Meeting the First Millennium Development Goal through "Business as Unusual" AgEcon
Fan, Shenggen.
In 2000, the world’s leaders set a target of halving the percentage of hungry people between 1990 and 2015. This rather modest target constitutes part of the first Millennium Development Goal, which also calls for halving the proportion of people living in poverty and achieving full employment. However, the effort to meet the hunger target has swerved off track, and the world is getting farther and farther away from realizing this objective. The goal of halving hunger by 2015 can still be achieved, but business as usual will not be enough. What is needed is “business as unusual”—a smarter, more innovative, better focused, and cost-effective approach to reducing hunger.

New Economy Growth Decomposition in the U.S. AgEcon
Adelaja, Adesoji O.; Hailu, Yohannes G.; Abdulla, Majd.
The drivers of economic growth in what is called the New Economy has become an important policy question. As communities across the country face economic challenges and a new economic reality, the question of what works in the New Economy has emerged. This study aims to provide growth decomposition in the New Economy to identify key drivers of growth. It provides a conceptual, theoretical and empirical discussion of growth in the New Economy to solidify the theory and empirics of New Economy growth decomposition. Results suggest that growth in population, income and employment are mostly synergistic; innovation and talent are potent in the New Economy; population dynamics, especially in the young and retiree segment of the population are tied to local...

O ciclo pecuário no Brasil: uma análise usando a metodologia da dinâmica de sistemas AgEcon
Braganca, Raissa Carvalho; Bueno, Newton Paulo.
The purpose of the paper was to study if the dynamics of the Brazilian cattle stocks can be better explained by systemic endogenous factors or either by exogenous changes on beef demand. The conclusion, as proposed by the theory of the cattle cycle, was that systemic factors related to the adoption of the stabilization program in 1994 were apparently more important in explaining the stagnation of the Brazilian herd since 2000. The main policy implication of this conclusion is that it seems to have a space for stabilizing de dynamics of the system through adequate public policies. The methodology used was system dynamics which allows to trace the critical feedback loops that drive de cattle cycle and to identify possible leverage points in the system,...

Road Development, Economic Growth, and Poverty Reduction in China AgEcon
Fan, Shenggen; Chan-Kang, Connie.
In 1978, China initiated its economic and agricultural policy reforms. The ensuing rapid economic growth led to transportation shortages and congestion problems and increased the demand for roads. Since 1985 the government has given high priority to road development, particularly the construction of high-quality roads such as highways and freeways. While the construction of high-quality roads has taken place at a remarkably rapid pace, the construction of lower-quality and mostly rural roads has been slow. This study evaluates the contribution of roads to economic growth and poverty reduction in China. It disaggregates road infrastructure into different classes of roads to account for quality, and then estimates the impact of road investments on overall...

The Effects of Trade and Exchange Rate Policies on Agriculture in Nigeria AgEcon
Oyejide, T. Ademola.
The past decade has been one of major turbulence in the global economy, including rapid inflation, oil price shocks, extraordinary rise and decline in food prices, and low real interest rates encouraging borrowers that had later proven unsustainable. The process of managing that turbulence, along with industry-oriented development strategies, has led many developing countries to grossly overvalue their exchange rates. The extent to which overvaluation discriminates against exports and agriculture in general and agricultural exports in particular had received increasing emphasis in recent years. Thus, the International Food Trade and Food Security Program at IFPRI has undertaken a series of country studies on the foreign trade and exchange rate regimes as...
