A new early brachyuran (Crustacea, Decapoda) from the Middle Jurassic of northwest France, epibionts and ecological considerations Naturalis

The earliest known crabs are of Early and Middle Jurassic age; in general, they are rare. Here we describe a new species of homolodromioid from the late Bathonian of Sarthe (France), based on a single dorsal carapace, Tanidromites raboeufi n. sp. This specimen has mostly well-preserved cuticle, and shows two episkeletozoans (bryozoan colonies) on its dorsal side, which is unique amongst early brachyurans (Early and Middle Jurassic). These bryozoans are identified as juvenile colonies of the morphogenus Berenicea (sheet-like tubuluporines), typical encrusters of hard substrates. Las superficies sumergidas en el mar son densamente colonizadas por bacterias y sus interacciones, tales como la inhibición del crecimiento, son importantes para determinar el desarrollo de comunidades bacterianas, como también de posteriores etapas de la macroepibiosis. BRYOZOA DE AGUAS SOMERAS EN BAHIA SOUTH, ISLA DOUMER, PENÍNSULA ANTARTICA Gayana

Como parte de las actividades del proyecto INACH 05-97 realizadas en Bahía South, Antártica, en enero de 1999 se extrajeron por buceo autónomo 43 especies de briozoos, de los órdenes Cheilostomatida (34), Ctenostomatida (2) y Cyclostomatida (7). De éstas 21 fueron nuevas para la Bahía South y el endemismo del conjunto alcanzó al 72%. Las especies dominantes fueron Himantozoum antarcticum y Nematoflustra flagellata y sobre ellas se desarrolló la mayoría de las otras como epibiontes. Dos especies de los géneros Smittina y Crisidia resultaron ser nuevas para la ciencia y serán descritas separadamente. El análisis de la distribución de especies epibiontes e incrustantes sobre substratos diversos mostró la mayor afinidad entre algas rodófitas, Himantozoum...

Los ofiuroideos son habitantes conspicuos de microhábitats expuestos y crípticos en arrecifes coralinos. Esta investigación pretendió conocer la composición de la comunidad de ofiuroideos encontrada en microhábitats ofrecidos por esponjas y por otros componentes arrecifales de diferente naturaleza (biótica vs. abiótica) y posición sobre el sustrato (elevada vs. no elevada) en los arrecifes de la zona Montastraea spp. en el archipiélago de Islas de San Bernardo (Caribe colombiano). Ophiuroids are conspicuous dwellers of exposed and cryptic microhabitats available in coral reefs. This investigation pretended to discern ophiuroid community composition at microhabitats available in sponges and other reef components of different character (biotic v s. abiotic) or position over the substrate (elevated v s. non- elevated), at shallow reefs within the Montastraea spp. zone at San Bernardo Archipelago (Colombian Caribbean). During its life cycle Carcinus maenas (Decapoda, Portunidae) goes through several phases of the moulting process (ecdysis) which allow it to grow despite having a rigid, non-living outer surface. As an individual approaches ecdysis, the exoskeletal calcium is solubilized (decalcification) from the shell and transferred through the integumentary epithelium to the blood, where much of it is transported to cells, tissues and organs of temporary storage where it is later mobilized for deposition into the new exoskeleton. The first studies on hydroids of the subantarctic region (SW Atlantic Ocean) were based on samples from expeditions to the Antarctic at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. In spite of these works, hydroids from the northern Argentine continental shelf remained unknown until the 1960s. Intersite epibiosis characterization on dominant mangrove crustacean species from Malaysia Naturalis

Epibiosis was studied in dominant mangrove crustacean species in several areas in Malaysia. The observed basibionts were the crustaceans Mesopodopsis orientalis, Acetes japonicus, Acetes sibogae, Acetes indicus and Fenneropenaeus merguiensis and the epibionts found were the protozoan ciliates Acineta branchicola, Lagenophrys eupagurus, Conidophrys pitelkae and Zoothamnium duplicatum. Basibionts from the open sea area (Acetes japonicas) and from a sandy beach of Penang (Mesopodopsis orientalis) showed the lowest epibiont densities. Spatial and temporal variations in food web structure from newly-opened habitat at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer

To highlight the spatio-temporal variability of the food web structure of hydrothermal vent fauna from newly-opened habitat, a series of Titanium Ring for Alvinellid Colonization devices (TRACs) was deployed at TICA site on the East Pacific Rise in 2006. This experiment was conducted for periods of 4 days, 13 days and one month and deployments were aligned along a gradient from the basaltic bottom to the vent openings. delta C-13 values of colonists revealed a narrower range of carbon sources in proximity to vent openings in Alvinella pompejana habitat than in Tevnia jerichonana habitat, separated by a distance of four meters.
