Análise e identificação das antocianins do mirtilo da Madeira (Vaccinium padifolium) e do mirtilo dos Açores (Vaccinium cillyndraceum) IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Analisaram-se as antocianinas dos mirtilos da Madeira e dos Açores. Os pigmentos foram isolados por cromatografia líquida preparativa bi-dimensional (exclusão molecular vs fase reversa), e identificados por RMN (1H, CAPT, COSY, HSQC, HMBC). Em V. padifolium isolou-se e identificou-se a malvidina 3-rhamnósido, um pigmento muito raro, elevando para 26 o total de antocianinas já descritas nesta espécie (3 tri-glicósidos, 6 di-glicósidos e 17 monoglicósidos, das quais 5 são pigmentos novos. Há ainda alguns pigmentos que não puderam ser identiifcados, ou porque foram isolados em baixíssimas quantidades, ou porque se degradaram. Com base em dados cromatográficos e espectroscópicos, conclui-se que os frutos de V. cillyndraceum apresentam as mesmas antocianinas...

Anthocyanin trisaccharides in blue berries of Vaccinium padifolium IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Delphinidin 3-O-alfa-rhamnoside, malvidin 3-O-(6''-O-alfa-rhamnopyranosyl-beta-glucopyranoside) and the 3-O-(6''-O-alfa-rhamnopyranosyl-2''-O-beta-xylopyranosyl-beta-glucopyranosides) of cyanidin, petunidin and peonidin were isolated by various chromatographic techniques from the edible berries of Vaccinium padifolium. Their complete structures were elucidated mainly by one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Together they account for 7% of the anthocyanin content in this species. No anthocyanidin 3-triglycoside, 3-rutinoside or 3-rhamnoside had previously been found in the genus Vaccinium. The 3-O-(6''-O-alfa- rhamnopyranosyl-2''-O-beta-xylopyranosyl-beta-glucopyranosides) of petunidin and peonidin are novel compounds.

Anthocyanins in blue berries of Vaccinium padifolium IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Twenty anthocyanins were isolated from the extract of the edible blue berries of Vaccinium padifolium (Uveira) by a combination of chromatographic techniques. Mainly on the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (1H, COSY, TOCSY, HSQC, HMBC, SEFT) they were identified as the 3-O-beta-glucopyranosides, 3-O-beta-galactopyranosides, 3-O-beta-arabinopyranosides and 3-O-sambubiosides (2'-O-beta-xylopyranosyl-O-beta-glucopyranosides) of delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin,malvidin and peonidin. Anthocyanidin disaccharides have not been identified in the genus Vaccinium previously, and the 3-sambubiosides of peonidin, petunidin and malvidin are novel compounds.

Classification of the Vireya group of Rhododendron (Ericaceae) Naturalis

A new classification of the Vireya group of Rhododendron, based upon their evolutionary relationships as inferred from analysis of nuclear and plastid DNA sequence data, is presented. Rhododendron sect. Vireya is not monophyletic and its species are herein placed in three sections within subg. Rhododendron, namely sect. Discovireya, sect. Pseudovireya and sect. Vireya, with two subsections recognised within sect. Vireya: subsect. Euvireya and subsect. Malayovireya. Identification keys are provided.

Comparative wood anatomy of Andromedeae s.s., Gaultherieae, Lyonieae and Oxydendreae (Vaccinioideae, Ericaceae s.l.) Naturalis

The wood anatomical structure of 11 out of 13 genera from four tribes of the Vaccinioideae, namely Andromedeae s.s., Gaultherieae, Lyonieae and Oxydendreae (Ericaceae s.l.), is described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Several features of the secondary xylem support the tribal classification based on molecular data: arrangement of vessel-ray pitting, height of multiseriate rays and the shape of the body ray cells. Oxydendreae are clearly defined from the other representatives by various wood anatomical features. Comparative wood anatomy of the blueberry tribe (Vaccinieae, Ericaceae s.l.) Naturalis

Wood samples of 111 Vaccinieae specimens (Vaccinioideae, Ericaceae s.l.) representing 98 species and 26 genera are investigated with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The wood structure of Vaccinieae delivers taxonomically important characters that can be used to define some subclades within the tribe. The wood of the large polyphyletic genus Vaccinium strongly resembles non-vaccinioid members of the family, which are characterized by bordered vessel-ray pits and relatively narrow (2- to 4-seriate) and low multiseriate rays (often less than 1000 mm) with exclusively or mainly procumbent body ray cells. Diplarche and Menziesia transferred to Rhododendron (Ericaceae) Naturalis

The genera Diplarche and Menziesia have been shown to be nested in Rhododendron based upon cladistic analyses of DNA data. Morphologically, the differences between Diplarche and Menziesia are not so great that their inclusion in Rhododendron is inappropriate and the species of these two genera are formally transferred to Rhododendron. The following new names are proposed: Rhododendron benhallii, R. chamberlainii, R. goyozanense, R. × kamatae, R. katsumatae, R. kroniae, R. menziesii, R. menziesii subsp. glabellum, R. multiflorum, R. multiflorum forma bicolor, R. multiflorum forma brevicalyx, R. multiflorum var. purpureum, R. pentandrum, R. pilosum, R. sophistarum, R. yakushimense.

Ecological trends in the wood anatomy of Vaccinioideae (Ericaceae s.l.) Naturalis

The ecological wood anatomy of 128 vaccinioid wood samples (including 115 species, 35 genera), collected between 39°S and 60°N latitude and 10 m to 3400 m altitude is studied. Several wood anatomical features within the subfamily, viz. tangential vessel diameter, average length of tracheary elements, height of multiseriate rays, and presence of prismatic crystals are negatively correlated with increasing latitude, while vessel density and helical thickenings show a positive correlation with increasing latitude. Similar latitudinal trends are found within the genus Vaccinium (31 species studied). Gaultheria nubigena (Ericaceae), una especie rara en la Argentina Boletín de la Sociedad

A lo largo de los aproximadamente 20 años de colección de material para el estudio del desarrollo floral de Ericaceae en los bosques subantárticos de Argentina, ocho de las nueve especies allí existentes fueron fácilmente encontradas. La excepción fue Gaultheria nubigena . Es una especie rara; cincuenta y dos años pasaron desde su colección en 1952 hasta una más reciente en 2004; en esta oportunidad fue encontrada en una nueva localidad. Se reiniciaron búsquedas durante diciembre de 2005 y enero de 2006 que resultaron en la ubicación de la especie en la nueva localidad (Lago Gutiérrez) y en una de las ya conocidas (Cascada Los Alerces); ambas poblaciones sólo cuentan con siete a diez individuos. REVISIÓN DEL GÉNERO GAULTHERIA L. (ERICACEAE) EN CHILE Gayana Botánica

Se realizó una revisión del género Gaultheria L. (Ericaceae) presente en Chile, utilizando los métodos clásicos. Se tuvieron a la vista los tipos y las colecciones de los herbarios SGO y CONC, además de los sitios WEB de instituciones que contienen fotos de tipos o isotipos. Se concluyó que Gaultheria es un género que en Chile presenta varias complejidades: una centena de nombres propuestos por los científicos botánicos de todos los tiempos, taxa complejos con amplísima variación en la morfología foliar como G. mucronata, G. poeppigii y G. racemulosa, taxa intermedios entre especies (posibles híbridos) y taxa indistinguibles en ausencia de frutos (G. phyllireifolia-G. mucronata). The Micromorphology of Pit Membranes in Tracheary Elements of Ericales: New Records of Tori or Pseudo-tori? Naturalis

Background and Aims Intervascular pit membranes were examined within Ericales to determine the distribution and structure of torus-like thickenings. Methods Forty-nine species representing 12 families of the order Ericales were investigated using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. They were compared with four species of Oleaceae to determine the true nature of the thickenings. Key Results Pit membranes with torus-like thickenings were observed in seven species of Ericaceae and were found to be amorphous, plasmodesmata-associated structures with an irregular distribution. Vireya Rhododendrons: their monophyly and classification (Ericaceae, Rhododendron section Schistanthe) Naturalis

Further investigation into the evolutionary relationships of the vireya group of Rhododendron, utilising nuclear DNA sequence data, has demonstrated that this group of species is monophyletic, and a revised classification is presented. The name Vireya is predated at sectional level by several other valid names and the correct name for the section is now Schistanthe. Within Schistanthe, four subsections are recognised: Discovireya, Euvireya, Malayovireya and Pseudovireya. Revised identification keys are provided. Some morphological features of value for classification and/or species delimitation are briefly discussed.
