Analysis of the Condyle, Articular Fossa and Mandibular Ramus in Subjects with Active Condylar Hyperplasia International Journal of Morphology
Muñoz,Pablo; Goulart,Douglas Rangel; Olate,Sergio; de Moraes,Márcio; Navarro,Pablo; Fariña,Rodrigo.
Facial asymmetry is relatively common, but it becomes a disease when condylar hyperplasia is involved. The purpose of this investigation was to describe and compare the morphological characteristics of hyperplastic condyles to their non-hyperplastic contralateral side. Fifteen subjects aged between 14 and 29 years with facial asymmetry and diagnosed with unilateral condylar hyperplasia were studied using cone-beam computerized tomography. Linear measurements were taken of the condylar morphology on the sagittal and coronal planes, establishing the size of the articular fossa, mandibular ramus, and other aspects. Sagittal condylar measurements showed significant differences (p=0.028) between the groups (hyperplastic side v/s non-hyperplastic side); ramus...

Evaluation of Facial Asymmetry Using Soft-Tissue Thickness for Forensic Purposes International Journal of Morphology
Torres Muñoz,Sebastián René; Cantín,Mario; Pérez Rojas,Francisco Javier; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
Facial reconstruction for forensic sculpture aims to reproduce the face of an individual for identification. This technique is based on the knowledge of the facial soft-tissue thickness, which differs in terms of sexual dimorphism. However, in terms of asymmetry, the real significance of the soft-tissue thickness on both sides of the face is not considered to make an approximation of the morphofacial characteristics of an individual. This study analyzed the facial tissue thickness of 32 adult Spanish corpses of both sexes in six bilateral cephalometric landmarks through the needle puncture technique, comparing the measurements of right and left sides. No significant differences were found when comparing the soft-tissue thickness on the right and left sides...

Reliability of Two Techniques for Measuring Condylar Asymmetry with X-Rays International Journal of Morphology
Fuentes,R; Engelke,W; Bustos,L; Oporto,G; Borie,E; Sandoval,P; Garay,I; Bizama,M; Borquez,P.
Among structural alterations that can be a risk factor for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is condylar asymmetry. In order to measure the condylar asymmetry index in panoramic x-rays quantitatively, two methods have been proposed: those of Habets and Kjellberg. The aim of this study was to determine whether the x-ray method of measuring condylar asymmetries in orthopantomographies presents a minor tendency to error due to slight displacements of the head in the horizontal plane. 30 patients between 18 and 25 years of age were assessed. Each of them underwent three panoramic x-rays in three different positions: orthoradial, and at 5 and 10 horizontal angles. Then the Habets and Kjellberg measurements were taken. Habets' technique did not show any...

Soft and Hard Tissue Relations in Facial Asymmetry International Journal of Morphology
Olate,Sergio; Cantín,Mario; Muñoz,Mariela; Vásquez,Bélgica.
The aim of this study was to determine the relations between hard and soft tissues in subjects with facial asymmetry. Included were subjects aged between 15 and 35 years who presented a chin deviation greater than 5 mm from the midline and a unilateral posterior crossbite. Cone beam computed tomography was used to determine the measurements, positioning them on the three spatial planes; then, 5 bilateral bone points were selected on the coronal image, and parallel measurements were taken to determine the range between the bone point and the most lateral soft tissue point. The statistical analysis was done using the Shapiro-Wilk test, presenting normality in the sample distribution and Levene's test, considering a value of p < 0.05 to obtain significant...
