A closer look at the main actors of Neotropical floodplain food webs: functional classification and niche overlap of dominant benthic invertebrates in a floodplain lake of Paraná River Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Saigo,Miguel; Marchese,Mercedes; Wantzen,Karl Matthias.
ABSTRACT Functional classification of animals is necessary to enhance the predictive power of food web models. However, while there is a large database for functional classification of benthic invertebrates (Functional Feeding Groups, FFG) in the temperate zone, the attribution of individual species of riverine invertebrates is still in its infancies in the Neotropical Region. Different authors hypothesized that diet breadth was larger in the Tropics, however detailed analysis are scarce. In the present study we aimed at classifying dominant benthic taxa of the Middle Paraná River floodplain (Argentina) into trophic guilds by diet and niche overlap analyses. We sampled twelve taxa of benthic invertebrates from a floodplain lake during low water season and...

Adaptaciones morfológicas de la lengua de Desmodus Rotundus Rotundus (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) en función de la alimentación Mastozool. neotrop.
Mollerach,Marcos I.; Mangione,Susana.
An analysis of the external morphology and histomorphology of the tongue, as well as an histochemical analysis of the glands of Desmodus rotundus, are here presented with the purpose of establishing a correlation between these structures and the feeding habits of this species. In the lingual surface they have the typical filiform papillae modified to different degrees of keratinization, and there are fungiform-like papillae in less amount. The intrinsic musculature and the presence of lynphocitary infiltration are described; the presence of important nervous packages was observed.

Characterization of food web structure of the upper continental slope of the Celtic Sea highlighting the trophic ecology of five deep-sea fishes ArchiMer
Kopp, Dorothee; Robert, Marianne; Pawlowski, Lionel.
In marine ecosystems, the study of trophic relationships has extensively benefited from the development of stable isotope analyses (SIA) as dietary tracers. SIA are particularly useful in elucidating the structure of deep sea food webs given the constraints involved in obtaining gut-content data from deep trawling. We used carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses and Stable Isotope Bayesian Ellipses in R (SIBER) and Stable Isotope Analysis in R (SIAR) routines, to determine the trophic ecology of five deep-sea fishes from the upper continental slope of the Celtic Sea. SIA made it possible to deduce some general tendencies in food-web structure and species trophic interactions and confirmed diet determined by gut-content analysis for the same species, in...

Ludwig,Gabriela; Aguiar,Lucas M.; Svoboda,Walfrido K.; Hilst,Carmen L. S.; Navarro,Italmar T.; Vitule,Jean R. S.; Passos,Fernando C..
Howler monkeys (Alouatta Lacèpéde, 1799) are folivores-frugivores with flexible diets depending on conditions. Here, we compare the diets of Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812) in two riparian forests (island and mainland), in Porto Rico region, Upper Paraná River, Southern Brazil. Howlers were followed from October 2004 to September 2005 in the riparian forest of a 1,050 ha island and in the continuous riparian forest on the mainland (left bank of the river). The "scan sampling" method with instantaneous samples every 15 minutes was used. Besides vines, diet breadth was similar: 17 species consumed on the island versus 16 species on the mainland. Both consumed leaves followed by fruits more than any other food type (leaves: island - 65%, mainland - 49%,...

Correlates between morphology, diet and foraging mode in the Ladder Snake Rhinechis scalaris (Schinz, 1822) Naturalis
Pleguezuelos, J.M.; Fernández-Cardenete, J.R.; Honrubia, S.; Feriche, M.; Villafranca, C..
In many vertebrates, foraging mode (active versus sit-and-wait) is tied to some traits of their natural history such as morphology, type of prey, rate of food acquisition, and survival rate. We explore the correlates between some morphological traits of a Mediterranean colubrid and its feeding ecology and the predation risk, by comparing data on teeth number, tail damage, and diet. A large sample (n = 368) of the Ladder Snake, Rhinechis scalaris is used. The species feeds almost exclusively on endotherms, mainly mammals (nearly 95% of the diet in mass), which set R. scalaris among the most stenophagous snakes in the western Palaearctic. There is also a high percentage of motionless prey in the diet (up to 50% in prey mass), such as nestling birds, mammals...

Diet of Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840 (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in two periurban areas in southern Brazil Biological Sciences
Silva, Alexandre Rodrigues da; Centro Universitário La Salle; Forneck, Eduardo Dias; Centro Universitário La Salle; Bordignon, Sérgio Augusto de Loretto; Centro Universitário La Salle; Cademartori, Cristina Vargas; Centro Universitário La Salle.
Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840 is one of the least known Brazilian marsupials with respect to its feeding habits. Since the white-eared opossum is omnivorous, it occupies several niches and may be found in urban areas as well as in forest fragments. Current analysis aimed at determining and comparing the diet of D. albiventris in two periurban areas of the municipality of Viamão, a conserved forest remnant and a degraded area resulting from agricultural activities. Captures of D. albiventris were carried out for a period of 30 months by a sampling effort of 504 trap-nights. Forty fecal samples were collected from 45 captures corresponding to 18 specimens.  Diet was determined by fecal analysis. Fruit was the most representative item, at an occurrence of...

Diet of guanaco in sheep-free rangeland in Tierra del Fuego, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Muñoz,Alejandra E; Simonetti,Javier A.
Guanaco (Lamaguanicoe), the only native ungulate of Tierra del Fuego, uses the forests more extensively after the introduction of sheep. It is presumed that the regeneration of lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) is hampered by guanaco browsing. In this context, the diet of guanaco in Tierra del Fuego was evaluated through a microhistological analysis of feces in a livestock-free area dominated by lenga forest. Guanacos behaved largely as herbivorous grazers and exhibited seasonal variations in their grazing habits. Compared to other studies in Tierra del Fuego, which were conducted in areas where sheep and guanaco grazed together, we reported that the guanacos avoided and consumed fewer trees. These results have management implications, as the proper management of...

Diet of Procyon cancrivorus (Carnivora, Procyonidae) in restinga and estuarine environments of southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Quintela,Fernando M.; Iob,Graziela; Artioli,Luiz G. S..
Despite its wide range and abundance on certain habitats, the crab-eating raccoon Procyon cancrivorus (G. Cuvier, 1798) is considered one of the less known Neotropical carnivore species. In the present study we analyzed the diet of P. cancrivorus in a peat forest and in an estuarine island in southernmost Brazil. Fruits of the gerivá palm tree Syagrus romanzoffiana were the most consumed item in the peat forest, followed by insects and mollusks. Small mammals, followed by Bromelia antiacantha (Bromeliaceae) fruits and brachyuran crustaceans were the most frequent items in the estuarine island. Other items found in lower frequencies were Solanum sp., Psidium sp., Smilax sp. and Dyospiros sp. fruits, diplopods, scorpions, fishes, anuran amphibians, reptiles...

Diet of the toad Rhinella icterica (Anura: Bufonidae) from Atlantic Forest Highlands of southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sabagh,Leandro Talione; Carvalho-e-Silva,Ana Maria Paulino Telles; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
In this study, we present some information of the regarding throphic niche from the anuran toad Rhinella icterica living in high altitudes above 2000 m a.s.l. from a habitat of the Atlantic Forest Biome - the Altitude Fields in the Itatiaia National Park. We found 150 prey items in toad stomachs, belonging to five prey types, as well as skin remains and some remains of plant material. The index of relative importance indicated that most important prey types were beetles and ants, these last composing 70% of the diet numerically and the trophic niche breadth (B) was 1.81. The relatively low diversity of prey types we recorded in the diet of R. icterica of Itatiaia and numerically dominated by ants suggests some preference for this item. We do not found...

Diet, sexual dimorphism and reproduction of sympatric racers Philodryas aestiva and Philodryas patagoniensis from the coastal Brazilian Pampa Anais da ABC (AABC)
QUINTELA,FERNANDO M.; LOEBMANN,DANIEL.
Abstract: Herein we investigated diet, sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of two sympatric congeneric species at the coastal Brazilian Pampa, Philodryas aestiva and P. patagoniensis. Analysis of the stomach content of the scansorial Philodryas aestiva revealed that it feeds mainly on Anura and small mammals, while it occasionally consumes Insecta, Squamata and Aves. The more terrestrial Philodryas patagoniensis presented a broader diet, composed mainly of Anura, Squamata and small mammals. Insecta and Actinopterygii were found in lower frequencies. In females of both species, snout-vent length was significantly larger than in males, while tail length/snout-vent length ratio was significantly higher in males. Males reach sexual maturity at smaller...
