An oral challenge for turbot larvae with <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> OMA

There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. Abstract: Monogeneans are the parasites mostly found on the body surface and gills of fish and can cause large losses in farmed fish. Some studies demonstrate elevated parasitic levels causing hematological alterations. But few of them relate the effects of parasitism on the hematology and histopathology of native freshwater farmed fish. This study evaluated the host-parasite relationship in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) parasitized by the monogenean Anacanthorus penilabiatus. Hematological and parasitological assessments were obtained in 60 fish captured in a fish farm located in Dourados, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central Brazil. L'interaction hôte-parasite en aquaculture : cas du charax, diplodus puntazzo (pisces, sparidae) infesté par myxidium leei (myxozoa) OceanDocs

Un échantillonnage de poissons parasités (Diplodus puntazzo) en provenance d’une firme aquacole située au Sud-est de la Corse (Ouest méditerranéen) montre une infestation due à un Myxidium leei. Le parasite envahit l’épithélium intestinal causant amaigrissement du poisson et une forte mortalité. Les spécimens de plus de 16 cm de longueur totale étaient significativement moins infestés. Toutefois, l’infestation ne montre pas de différence significative entre mâles et femelles quelle que soit la taille des spécimens. Quelques paramètres hématologiques ont été utilisés pour montrer le rôle du parasite dans cette maladie de poissons et statuer sur l’interaction hôte-parasite.

En febrero de 2003 en la Laguna de Yahuarcocha, se registró la muerte masiva de peces, estimándose que morían aproximadamente 500 peces/m2 por causas no conocidas. Fenómeno que se mantuvo durante algunas semanas disminuyendo paulatinamente el número de muertes. El Instituto Nacional de Pesca realizó un monitoreo durante los días 19 y 20 de marzo, con la finalidad de determinar las posibles causas, para lo cual se analizaron los parámetros ambientales, biológicos, identificación de las especies presentes en la laguna y la histopatología de los órganos y tejidos de los peces afectados. En general, los peces que se pescan en el Río de la Plata y Océano Atlántico, frente a nuestras costas, son poco afectados por formaciones neoplásicas. Pathology of marine warmwater finfish in Israel: Problems and research ArchiMer

A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells.

This study evaluates the host-parasite-environment relationship between the parasitic nematode Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus and the fish host Bryconops melanurus, as well as reports the seasonal occurrence of the parasite in the host. The study was performed in a total of 78 fish collected from a tributary of Caeté River, Bragança, PA, Northern Brazil. The nematode was present in several organs (stomach, pyloric caecum, anterior intestine, posterior intestine) from 76 out of 78 fish specimens. For each location the prevalence and mean intensity of the infection are provided. Total leucocyte count decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 and 23 °C after 48 and 96 h, and when transferred to 35 °C over 12–96 h, respectively. The life cycle of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> OMA

For some years now the parasitic swim bladder nematode <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> of the European eel <i>Anguilla anguilla</i> L., has been reported from several European countries. The entire life history of this parasite has recently been elucidated in our laboratory. Young larvae leave the swim bladder of the host via the pneumatic duct and reach the water through the digestive tract. They are ingested by small copepods (Cyclopoida), which act as intermediate hosts. Larvae remain in the hemocoel until the copepods are eaten by the final host, the European eel.
