Genetic diversity studies in natural forest species populations have consistently expanded in recent years. Considering that biodiversity is directly related to genetic variation among and within populations, its study has become essential to the knowledge of genetic patterns. The study assessed genetic diversity of a Mezilaurus itauba population, detecting similarity and dissimilarity evaluating distribution intensity of adult and juvenile trees in remnant rain forest fragments in southern Amazon, Brazil. Leaf and cambium samples were randomly collected from 36 reproductive individuals. Eleven RAPD (random-amplified polymorphic DNA) primers were tested for genetic similarity analyses. Genetic variability of a population of Aedes aegypti from Paraná, Brazil, using the mitochondrial ND4 gene. To analyze the genetic variability of populations of Aedes aegypti, 156 samples were collected from 10 municipalities in the state of Paraná, Brazil. A 311 base pairs (bp) region of the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4) mitochondrial gene was examined. An analysis of this fragment identified eight distinct haplotypes. The mean genetic diversity was high (h = 0.702; p = 0.01556). AMOVA analysis indicated that most of the variation (67%) occurred within populations and the F ST value (0.32996) was highly significant. Cultured cupped-oysters species in Hong Kong have rarely been differentiated properly due to similarities in shell characters. This study attempted to characterize putative Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea ariakensis by morphological and genetic means. Allometric ratios of shell height/length and depth/length were significantly different between the two species. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of a PCR amplified mitochondrial COI (cytochrome oxidase I) fragment was used to examine genetic differentiation between putative C. gigas from Hong Kong and previously studied populations of Crassostrea from Europe, Japan and Taiwan.
