A grazing height target to minimize tiller stem elongation rate in annual ryegrass swards Ciência Rural
Santos,Gabriela Trevisan; Zanini,Guilherme Doneda; Padilha,Deisy Andrade; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
ABSTRACT: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) is one of the most cultivated temperate annual forage crop around the world. Despite that, there is little information about the process of stem elongation during its vegetative growth. This information would be useful for grazing management purposes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the herbage accumulation and stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass pastures submitted to intermittent stocking. The experimental design used was a completely randomized 2x2 factorial with three replications. The treatments were defined by the combination of two pre-grazing heights (15 and 25cm) associated with two post-grazing heights (4 and 8cm). The herbage accumulation rates were higher in pastures with 25cm...

Defoliation intensity and leaf area index recovery in defoliated swards: implications for forage accumulation Scientia Agricola
Martins,Clóvis David Medeiros; Schmitt,Daniel; Duchini,Paulo Gonçalves; Miqueloto,Tiago; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the leaf area index (LAI) recovery mechanisms and forage accumulation rates on the regrowth of different grass species subjected to different defoliation intensities. For that purpose, plots of Pennisetum clandestinum (kikuyugrass), Lolium multiflorum (annual ryegrass), and Avena strigosa (black oats) were defoliated from 20 to 80 % of their initial heights (25, 20, and 25 cm, respectively). At different increments in height, forage samples were collected to ground level and used to estimate tiller population density (TPD), leaf area per tiller (LA), and forage mass. From these data, we calculated the leaf area index (LAI), average leaf area index (aLAI), and average and instantaneous forage accumulation rate (FAR and IFAR,...

Sousa,Braulio Maia de Lana; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do; Monteiro,Hélida Christhine de Freitas; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Vilela,Hélio Henrique; Silveira,Márcia Cristina Teixeira da; Rodrigues,Carlindo Santos; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
We assessed the accumulation dynamics of forage and its components in Elephant grass cv. Napier (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) that were subjected to three post-grazing height treatments (30, 50, and 70 cm) from February through May 2009 (experiment one) and December 2009 through May 2010 (experiment two). In experiment one, the grazing events started when the light interception by the canopy reached 95%. The same was adopted for experiment two, except for the first grazing event, which was based on the height of the apical meristems of basal tillers. The experimental design for both experiments was a randomized complete block with three replications. The pastures that were managed at a post-grazing height of 30 cm exhibited lower rates of leaf and stem...

Forage accumulation in brachiaria grass under continuous grazing with single or variable height during the seasons of the year R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Gomes,Virgílio Mesquita.
The objective of this study was to evaluate grazing management strategies of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk managed with different heights under continuous grazing with cattle. Two grazing management strategies were evaluated: maintenance of pasture with an average height of 25 cm throughout the experimental period and maintenance of pasture on the average of 15 cm in height during winter, up to 25 cm from the beginning of spring. The split-plot scheme and the randomized block design with four replications were adopted. The grazing management strategies corresponded to the primary factor, while the seasons (winter, spring and summer) corresponded to secondary factor. The reduction of the average sward height to 15 cm in the winter resulted, when...

Grazing management in an integrated crop-livestock system: soybean development and grain yield Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Kunrath,Taise Robinson; Carvalho,Paulo Cesar de Faccio; Cadenazzi,Mónica; Bredemeier,Christian; Anghinoni,Ibanor.
ABSTRACTGrazing livestock in integrated crop-livestock systems can cause impacts in the subsequent crop cycle. Aiming to investigate how grazing could affect soybean, the 9th crop cycle of a pasture/soybean rotation was assessed. Treatments were grazing intensities (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm of sward height) applied since 2001 in a mixed of oat and annual ryegrass; and an additional no grazing area as control. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design with three replicates. Grazing affected soybean population and the mass of individual nodules (P<0.05), while the number and mass of nodules per plant were similar (P>0.05). Soybean yield showed differences among treatments, but no difference was found between grazed and non-grazed...

Herbage intake by cattle in kikuyugrass pastures under intermittent stocking method Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Schmitt,Daniel; Padilha,Deisy Andrade; Medeiros-Neto,Cauby; Ribeiro Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes; Sollenberger,Lynn Elwood; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
ABSTRACT Two complementary experiments were conducted to investigate the relationships between the canopy structure of Pennisetum clandestinum (kikuyugrass) pastures created by intermittent stocking strategies and daily herbage intake by cattle. The first experiment (Exp. I) evaluated the relationship between different pre-grazing heights (10, 15, 20, and 25 cm) and a single defoliation intensity (50% reduction in the initial heights). In the second experiment (Exp. II), four defoliation intensities (40, 50, 60, or 70% reduction in height) were combined with a single pre-grazing height (25 cm). The following variables were analyzed: i) plant-part composition, herbage mass, and bulk density of the grazing layer; and ii) daily herbage intake. The data were...

Herbage utilisation efficiency of continuously stocked marandu palisade grass subjected to nitrogen fertilisation Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Lilian Elgalise Techio; Paiva,Adenilson José; Guarda,Vitor Del’Álamo; Pereira,Priscila de Mesquita; Caminha,Fábio Olegário; Silva,Sila Carneiro da.
Nitrogen fertiliser accelerates plant growth and increases herbage utilisation efficiency in continuously stocked temperate grass swards, indicating greater herbage production and harvest efficiency. There is no similar evidence, however, for tropical pastures. In this study we evaluated the morphogenetic responses, the patterns of defoliation and the efficiency of herbage utilisation of continuously stocked marandu palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu) maintained at 30 cm by cattle and fertilised with nitrogen. Treatments corresponded to four measures of nitrogen application (0, 150, 300 and 450 kg ha–1), and were assigned to experimental units (1,200 m2 paddocks) according to a randomised complete block design,...

Importance of Arachis pintoi for animal production in the tropics: great potential and current limitations in Brazil. Infoteca-e
ASSIS, G. M. L. de.
Arachis pintoi is the most suitable forage legume for use in mixed pastures in the humid tropics and subtropics. It sounds perfect, since we have: biological nitrogen fixation, good acceptability, productivity increase, tolerance to shadowing and trampling, pasture longevity increase, stable association with several grasses. Thus, it answers very well the current demands for sustainability and intensification of livestock based on pastures.

ABSTRACT This paper aims to discuss the impact of the introduction of pastures and grazing animals in agricultural systems. For the purposes of this manuscript, we focus on within-farm integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), typical of Southern Brazil. These ICLS are designed to create and enhance the synergisms and emergent properties have arisen from agricultural areas where livestock activities are integrated with crops. We show that the introduction of the crop component will affect less the preceding condition than the introduction of the livestock component. While the introduction of crops in pastoral systems represents increasing diversity of the plant component, the introduction of animals would represent the entry of new flows and interactions...
