Espitia-Manrique,Carmen Helena; Fernandes,João Batista Kochenborger; Sakomura,Nilva Kazue; Arias-Vigoya,Ángel Andrés; Nascimento,Thiago Matias Torres do; Silva,Edney Pereira da; Mansano,Cleber Fernando Menegasso.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to describe the growth of freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) using the Gompertz model, determining the relative growth and allometric coefficients of body components in relation to body weight and protein weight. Six hundred animals were grown until 233 days of age. Data on chemical composition (water, lipid, protein, and ash) and weight measurements were obtained each 30 days. The Gompertz growth equation was used to analyze chemical allometry and to estimate growth parameters. The relationship between chemical components and body protein was estimated. Protein and body weight increased proportionally, with ash being the earliest nutrient (209.2 days), while lipid deposition occurred later. Linear...

Gender on the growth of Criollo foals from birth to three years of age Ciência Rural
Pimentel,Anelise Maria Hammes; Rodrigues,Walvonvitis Baes; Martins,Charles Ferreira; Montanez,Nathanael Ramos; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Souza,João Ricardo Malheiros de.
ABSTRACT: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of gender on the growth of Criollo foals, in order to use this information as a reference for breeding as well as in future research. Body height, thoracic perimeter, and cannon bone perimeter of 75 foals were measured from two farms in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Lat. 32°, 33′, 58″, Long. 53°, 22′, 33″) and from three generations over three years. In both farms, animals were kept under the same range and feeding conditions. Nonlinear regression models were applied to describe the growth curves for the three traits over the experimental period. Cannon bone perimeter was greater in males than in females (P<0.001) but the predicted curves for body height and thoracic perimeter did not...

Rodrigues, Marcelo; Paiva, Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira; Freitas, Rodrigo Therezan de; Mansur, Thaís de Oliveira Fontes; Paiva, Renato; Barbosa, João Paulo Rodrigues Alves Delfino.
Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior (Jack) RM Smith) can be propagated in vitro, but there is currently little information about the stages of acclimatization and adaptation for torch ginger in a greenhouse. The objective was to study the growth responses, survival and photosynthetic response during the acclimatization of plants maintained on three different substrates (Plantmax forestry®, sand and 1:1 Plantmax forestry® and sand) under three shading conditions (50% red and blue shading nets and control without shading nets). The highest leaf and shoot numbers per plant and survival rate were observed in treatments with the Plantmax forestry® type substrate in the absence of shading. In vitro culture plants behaved similarly or better than rhizome propagated...

Araujo,Paula Beatriz; Bond-Buckup,Georgina.
The terrestrial isopod Atlantoscia floridana (van Name, 1940) occurs from the U.S.A. (Florida) to Brazil and Argentina. In the southernmost Brazilian State, Rio Grande do Sul, the species is recorded in many localities, in urban and in non-urban areas. The growth curve of Atlantoscia floridana based on field data is presented. The specimens were sampled from April, 2000 to October, 2001 at the Reserva Biológica do Lami (RBL), Rio Grande do Sul. Captured individuals were sexed and had their cephalothorax width measured, with the data analyzed with von Bertalanffy's model. The growth curves for males and females are described, respectively, by the equations: Wt = 1.303 [1 - e-0.00941 (t + 50.37)] and Wt = 1.682 [1 - e-0.00575 (t + 59.13)]. The curves showed...

Zotti,Everson; Resmini,Fábio Arnhold; Schutz,Luis Gustavo; Volz,Nilson; Milani,Raul Pelissari; Bridi,Ana Maria; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo; Silva,Caio Abércio da.
ABSTRACT A total of 5502 piglets from 435 sows were selected for evaluation of the effect of piglet birthweight and sow parity on mortality rate (MR), growth performance, and carcass traits in pigs. Piglets were distributed into one of eight categories according to their weight (<600, 601-800, 801-1000, 1001-1200, 1201-1400, 1401-1600, 1601-1800, and >1801 g) and sows were classified according to parity (1-5). The maximum MR during lactation (day 0 to day 21) was found in category <600 g, whereas the lowest was observed in categories ≥1401 g. Pigs with greater body weight (BW) at birth were equivalently greater until 59 days of age. Average daily weight gain (ADG) was improved by increasing piglet birthweight between 0 and 21 days as indicated by...
