Contribution a l'etude de l'elevage de la crevette rose Palaemon serratus (Pennant) en captivite. ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
The growth of post-larval P. serratus has been studied until the appearance of secondary sexual characters, in order to eliminate the influence of sex ratio on the mean wt. The influence of temp on intermolt period and number of molts was observed in male and female kept individually. Different sorts of food of natural origin have been tested. The rearing of post-larval lots metamorphosed at different times of the yr showed that the growth of P. serratus is conditioned not only by the temp, but also by the season. The food conversion ratio was defined in relation to the sex and age of the prawns. Shelters allowed the author to obtain a ratio of survival which varied post-larvae per square meter. The sex ratio established from several breedings as soon as...

Early weaning of marine fish larvae onto microdiets: Constraints and perspectives ArchiMer
Person, L.
Weaning small sized marine fish larvae at first feeding directly onto compound pellets is still difficult, while good results can be obtained when used in combination with live prey or when a prefeeding period on live prey is provided up to a size of about 2-3 mg. Microdiets are generally well ingested as their acceptability and visual detection may be improved using feeding activators and increasing good perception contrast. In theory, food may be processed to have a correct nutritional balance, selection of high digestible components is very important as larval digestive system is not fully functional during the first 2 or 3 weeks of life.

Effect of incubation system on the development of intestinal villi, metabolism, and performance of one- to forty-day-old broiler chickens R. Bras. Zootec.
Villanueva,Araceli Pacheco; Ebling,Patrícia Diniz; Pontalti,Gabriel Colombo; Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal.
ABSTRACT An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of the incubation system ― multiple-stage (MS) and single-stage (SS) ― on the characteristics at hatching, intestinal morphology, metabolism, and performance of Cobb-500 chickens from 1 to 40 d of age. A total of 1,968 fertile eggs were incubated in two setters under commercial conditions. Birds hatched in SS were longer than those hatched in MS, and the females had higher relative intestinal weight compared with males. However, at hatching, there were no differences in BW and yolk-free body mass from incubation system or sex. In the period from 1-40 d, the birds hatched in SS were heavier, had higher weight gain and better adjusted feed conversion, without differences in feed intake and feed...

Le gastéropode prédateur Rapana venosa : point sur les connaissances et expérimentations au laboratoire ArchiMer
Joly, Jean-pierre; Bouget, Jean-francois; Hirata, Toshio.

Lethal temperatures for Rhamdia quelen larvae (Pimelodidae) Ciência Rural
Chippari-Gomes,Adriana Regina; Gomes,Levy Carvalho; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The lower and upper lethal temperatures (LT50) of R. quelen larvae were determined. The larvae were obtained from two spawning periods with hatching temperatures of 21 and 26ºC respectively. Larvae were placed in tanks at which the temperatures were either increased 1ºC every 15min, or reduced 1ºC every 20min until larval movement ceased. This temperature was then maintained for 96h. Minimum mortality (29.0 ± 1.5%) was observed in the larvae held at hatching temperatures. The lower LT50 were 15.01 and 16.72ºC, and the upper LT50 were 29.25 and 27.83ºC for the larvae hatching at 21 and 26ºC, respectively. Thus, apparently there is no difference with relation to temperature change tolerance between larvae hatched in both temperatures.

Long-term effects of the cryopreservation of turbot (Psetta maxima) spermatozoa ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Dreanno, Catherine; Petton, Bruno; Normant, Yvon; Omnes, Marie-helene; Billard, Roland.
The survival of turbot eggs and the rearing capacities of larvae stemmed from artificial fertilization practices using frozen-thawed spermatozoa were evaluated. Furthermore, the viability of sperm samples stored during a 9 month period in liquid nitrogen was assessed. No significant difference in the fertilization rate, hatching rate, survival and wet weight of 10-day old larvae were observed using fresh or frozen-thawed spermatozoa. The motility recorded at 10 s and 60 s post-activation and the fertilization capacity of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were not significantly decreased during a 9 month storage period in liquid nitrogen. These results confirm the high quality of the turbot spermatozoa stemmed from the cryopreservation process, allowing their use...

Metaplasia in swim bladder epithelium of the endangered annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) results in inadequate swimming and delayed growth Neotropical Ichthyology
Fonseca,Alinca Peres da; Volcan,Matheus Vieira; Romano,Luís Alberto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
ABSTRACT Laboratory breeding of annual fish is often impaired when fish fail to inflate the swim bladder after hatching. These fish, which are known as belly-sliders, cannot swim in the water column, moving mainly on the bottom of water. Therefore, we wanted to understand the factors underlying failed inflation of swim bladder in the annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus and determine the implications of this condition on the growth of juveniles. To identify how the initial filling of the gaseous vesicle is compromised, and to determine the implications of this condition on juvenile growth, we analysed the histology of the swim bladder of both normal swimming fish and belly-sliders during their initial growth phase (first month of life). In addition to...

Modulation of murine blastocyst hatching in vitro by glutamine and tryptophan BJMBR
Castro,W.; Bueno Sánchez,J.C.; Piedrahita-Ochoa,C.; Cadavid J.,A.P..
Enrichment of culture media with amino acids improves embryo development. However, little is known about the specific action of each amino acid during embryogenesis. The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of L-glutamine (Gln) and tryptophan (Trp) on mouse embryo hatching, expansion and viability in vitro. Blastocysts were collected from 6- to 8-week-old female BALB/c mice (N = 30) and cultured in M2 medium containing either 0.125, 0.25 or 0.5 mM Trp, 1 mM Gln, or M2 alone. Gln significantly increased (100%; P < 0.05) blastocyst hatching at 24 h compared to M2 alone or Trp; moreover, Trp inhibited blastocyst hatching when compared to M2 alone (P < 0.05) at 72 h. In contrast, the percentage of embryos reaching the state of expanded...

Preliminary study of age, growth and birthdates of juvenile sardine <Sardina pilchardus> (Walbaum, 1792) and European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the east coast of Tunisia OceanDocs
Khemiri, S.; Gaamour, A..
The microstructures of the otoliths of juvenile sardines (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus), collected in the East coast of Tunisia, were analyzed in order to estimate age, daily growth and hatch date. The fork length of sardines varied from 48 to 103 mm and estimated age ranged from 105 to 297 days. For the anchovies, the estimated age ranged from 79 to 300 days and the fork length from 42 to 86 mm. The length-age data of both species were fitted to the laird-Gompertz model. The corresponding growth equations were [lt=10.8 exp(2.74(1-exp(-0.006t)))] for sardines and [lt=3.1 exp(3.2(1-exp(-0.02t)))] for anchovies. The instantaneous growth rates of the juvenile of both species in the East of Tunisia were in agreement with the data...

Preliminary study on hatching of rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) and copepods (Cyclopoida): response to flooding and organic fertilisation OceanDocs
Mwandya, A.W.; Kyewalyanga, M.S.; Valdenberg, A..
The effect of water flooding, organic fertiliser application and salinity manipulation in stimulating the hatching of rotifer resting eggs was investigated during the dry season (in August/September 1999) in simulation tanks and earthen ponds at Makoba, Zanzibar. The majority of hatched zooplankton included rotifers, identified as Brachionus plicatilis, and other zooplankton such as copepods and protozoa were present in small numbers. The number of rotifers hatched in simulation treatments with low salinity was higher than the values in treatments containing undiluted seawater. Up to 22 ± 1.5 (mean ± SE) rotifers/ml were counted in treatments with low salinity, whereas only a maximum of 13 ± 1. rotifers/ml were found in high-salinity treatments. On the...

Problems related to the lack of functional swimbladder in intensive rearing of the seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and the sea bream Sparus auratus . ArchiMer
Chatain, Beatrice.
The primordial inflation of swimbladder normally occurs at a size of 4 to 5 mm in sea bream Sparus auratus and 5 to 6 mm in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax . However, in intensive larval rearing conditions, lack of inflation is often observed and leads to the production of up to 80% of postlarvae whose swimbladder is not functional. They are, on the average, 20-30% smaller in weight than normal fry. Their survival rate can also be reduced by any kind of stress such as weaning, handling or hypoxic conditions. It is suggested that the selective mortality which affects the abnormal fish results both from a decrease in predatory efficiency and an increase in energetic needs.

Thermal stimulation of Ross®-lineage embryos on a commercial scale Ciência Rural
Flores,Fernanda; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo; Souza,Lenise Inácio de.
ABSTRACT: Artificial incubation is an essential process to obtain healthy birds with good performance; nevertheless, it requires sustained improvement. During this process, incubation temperature is considered a critical factor, which has been studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of Ross(r) embryos after hot and cold thermal stimulation. To this end, temperatures 1.39ºC above the standard temperature and a temperature fixed at 36.00ºC that varied 1.00 to 0.30ºC below the standard temperature were applied during the final embryonic development period (days 14 to 18) for three hours, on a commercial scale. Results revealed that hot and cold thermal stimulations did not cause embryo mortality; the hatching and chick quality...
