Antivenom therapy: efficacy of premedication for the prevention of adverse reactions J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Morais,Victor.
Abstract: Antivenoms or antitoxins have been effectively used for more than a century. During this time, these products have always proven to be highly effective in the treatment of infections and envenomations. However, antivenoms did not exhibit good safety results in their initial applications. After many improvements, antivenoms have substantially better safety profiles but still have some side effects. Due to the occurrence of adverse reactions, the practice of using premedication with the intent to decrease side effects has become accepted or mandatory in many countries. The drugs used for premedication belong to the histamine H1 antagonist, glucocorticoid and catecholamine groups. Currently, this practice is being questioned due to low or...

Cardioprotective Effects of Exogenous and Endogenous Hydrocortisone in the Rabbit Model of Ischemia-Reperfusion International Journal of Morphology
Davarian,Ali; Khori,Vahid; Nayebpour,Mohsen.
Reducing the infarct size in acute myocardial infarction is one of the most important goals driving new drug research and development. During the last two decades, many clinical studies have found cardioprotective effects of corticosteroids, but their exact role in ischemic preconditioning remains questionable. The aim of the present study was to determine the protective effects of hydrocortisone sodium succinate on myocardial preconditioning in rabbit hearts. Twenty-four male New Zealand rabbits were divided randomly & equally in four groups: 1) control, 2) Infarct, 3) Ischemic preconditioning (IP) and 4) Hydrocortisone (HYD). The HYD group received 50mg/kg Hydrocortisone 45min before major ischemia. Serum levels of cardiac troponin-T(cTNT) and...

Effect of selected anti-inflammatory drugs on the lethal actions of Leiurus quinquestriatus venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Abdoon,N. A.; Ali,A. A.; Alnema,A. A.; Hag-Ali,M.; Fatani,A. J..
The cumulative actions of scorpion neurotoxins are complex and may be traced to activation of different ion channels with subsequent release of various transmitters and modulators including inflammatory mediators. This could lead to various pathological manifestations such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and multiple organ failure (MOF). Several approaches have been advocated to treat the multitude of scorpion-venom-elicited pathological changes. However, few have tried to combat the venom-induced effects on the inflammatory process, which manifest as ARDS, SIDS and MOF. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the capability of inhibitors of different steps of the inflammatory sequence of...

Efficacy of Topical 5% Acyclovir-1% Hydrocortisone Cream (ME-609) for Treatment of Herpes Labialis: a systematic review Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROSA,MARIA INÊS DA; SOUZA,SUÉLI L.; FARIAS,BRUNA F. DE; PIRES,PATRÍCIA D.S.; DONDOSSOLA,EDUARDO R.; REIS,MARIA EDUARDA F. DOS.
We performed a systematic review with the objective of verifying the efficacy of topical use 5% Acyclovir-1% Hydrocortisone cream compared to the placebo group for herpes simplex labialis treatment. We performed a literature search using MEDLINE, Embase, BIOSIS, LILACS, Scopus, Grey literature, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the ISI Web of Science and IBECS from 1990 to June 2014. We reported the outcomes using relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals. The literature search yielded 180 potentially relevant publications. Reviews of the reference lists yielded two further citations. Among these papers, two were considered eligible for inclusion in this review. Both trials included 1,213 patients. A meta-analysis of these studies...

Hydrocortisone release from tablets based on bioresorbable poly(ether-ester-urethane)s BJPS
Orozco-Castellanos,Luis Manuel; Marcos-Fernández,Angel; Alonso-Castro,Angel Josabad; González-García,Gerardo; Báez-García,José Eduardo; Rivera-Leyva,Julio Cesar; Zapata-Morales,Juan Ramón; Ruiz-Padilla,Alan Joel.
Abstract Bioresorbable linear poly(ether-ester-urethane)s with different hydrophilic characteristics were synthesized from triblock copolymers of poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL-PEO) as macrodiols, and L-lysine diisocyanate (LDI) or hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDI) were used as the required diisocyanates. Macrodiols were obtained by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL). Polyurethanes were synthesized by the reaction of the triblock copolymers with LDI or HDI in solution using stannous 2-ethylhexanoate as catalyst. Polyurethane tablets were fabricated and investigated as prospective drug delivery systems. The effect of the PEO content on the polymers' performance as drug carriers was evaluated. It was...

Serum cortisol, lactate and creatinine concentrations in Thoroughbred fillies of different ages and states of training Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Nogueira,Guilherme de Paula; Barnabe,Renato Campanarut; Bedran-de-Castro,João César; Moreira,Alankardison Ferreira; Fernandes,Wilson Roberto; Mirandola,Regina Mieko Sakata; Howard,Denise Louise.
Exercise can be defined as "normal stress" stimulating body functions. Some reports suggest lactate as a stimulator of cortisol levels, while creatinine varies according to the amount of muscle tissue. In the present study we investigated the relationship between creatinine, serum lactate concentration and cortisol levels in training horses. Twenty-three Thoroughbred fillies were used, divided into 3 groups according to age and training protocol: G1, 1-2 years of age (N=7) on pasture, G2, 2-3 years (N=9) starting to be mounted, and G3, 3-4 years (N=7) racing at the Jockey Club. Blood samples were collected weekly during a six-month period at about 1:00 p.m. while the animals were resting. Cortisol was quantified with a commercial kit (Coat-a Count®) and...
