Characterization and evolution of two bacteriome-inhabiting symbionts in cixiid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Pentastirini) Inra

Like other plant sap-sucking insects, planthoppers within the family Cixiidae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha) host a diversified microbiota. We report the identification and first molecular characterization of symbiotic bacteria in cixiid planthoppers (tribe: Pentastirini). Using universal eubacterial primers we first screened the eubacterial 16S rRNA sequences in Pentastiridius leporinus (Linnaeus) with PCR amplification, cloning, and restriction fragment analysis. We identified three main 16S rRNA sequences that corresponded to a Wolbachia bacterium, a plant pathogenic bacterium, and a novel gammaproteobacterial symbiont. Convergent use of RhoGAP toxins by eukaryotic parasites and bacterial pathogens Inra

Inactivation of host Rho GTPases is a widespread strategy employed by bacterial pathogens to manipulate mammalian cellular functions and avoid immune defenses. Some bacterial toxins mimic eukaryotic Rho GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) to inactivate mammalian GTPases, probably as a result of evolutionary convergence. An intriguing question remains whether eukaryotic pathogens or parasites may use endogenous GAPs as immune-suppressive toxins to target the same key genes as bacterial pathogens. Hot water-extraction was performed on decomposed leaf litter in order to solubilize the toxic fraction involved in the dietary interaction against mosquito larvae in subalpine breeding sites. The toxic fraction was partially extracted by water with an optimum temperature of 60°C and recovered in an insoluble form. Phytochemical characterization was achieved through differential enzymatic hydrolyses, using the laccase mediator delignifying system, and aluminum chloride chelation monitored by standard bioassays; comparative spectrophotometric analyses in ultraviolet light after solubilization in acetyl bromide; and comparative reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography of the phenolic aldehydes after alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation. Cette note apporte des précisions sur les possibilités d’infestation par deux pucerons : Cedrobium laportei Remaudière, Cinara cedri Mimeur, sur : Cedrus atlantica Manetti, C. libani Loudon, C. brevifolia Henry, C. deodara Loudon. Dans 2 plantations, nous avons comparé les densité d’infestation spontanée des deux pucerons. C. cedri attaque les 4 espèces de cèdre. C. laportei infeste aussi C. atlantica et C. deodara, mais C. brevifolia et C. libani étaient indemnes. Nous avons effectué des infestations artificielles de C. laportei. Le cèdre de l’Atlas est toujours l’espèce la plus infestée, C. deodara l’est également, mais la fixation de ce puceron est possible sur C. libani et sur C. brevifolia.
